My Newport Cert Expe

My Newport Cert Experience..

RT

On this Saturday morning a group of neighbors from LVH joined with other folks from our community of Newport, South Beach and Lost Creek to experience a kind of graduation ceremony.

We were the first class of this area’s Civilian Emergency Response Team. Today was the day that we put all of our training into play. We had been going to school for months and it was time to find out if we really had learned the lessons or not.

Everybody arrived at the National Guard Armory  Building in Newport around 9am. We were given a review of the points we had learned from the many professionals who had shepparded us through our training. They clearly were anxious for us to succeed and their enthusiasm for the coming exercise was catching.

Soon the moment arrived and we were divided into groups of about 5 or 6. Each group was taken one at a time to the Old City Hall next to the National Guard Armory where our disaster had been brewed. A group would be gone for a half hour or so and then return and then the next group would leave.

Five of us were in the last group. We were Ed Simon, John Spangler, Bill Furgason, Rod McCready and me (Ron Thomas). As we left the building, Toby Cole the Assistant Fire Chief, gathered us together and explained our emergency scenario.

Newport had just experienced a 9.0 earthquake and since our community was ok we all found ourselves at the old city hall where we were told people could be heard yelling for help. A tsunami was eminent. People had been seen wandering aimlessly about the parking lot. Toby explained that he would be our observer/coach and needed us to verbalize what we were thinking as we approached all our problems.

The parking lot then was our staging area and of course it was raining. The first thing we did was to select the leader of our group. Based on his experience as a former police officer we chose Ed Simon. However, each and every one of us had been trained to be the leader because in a real emergency we would not always have the same people available.

Ed began documentation and assigned us into two man teams. From where we stood we could see the building was fed natural gas and a team was dispatched to turn it off. The building had to be surveyed from outside before we could enter and so that took place.  Meanwhile, a young lady wandered on to the seen wanting help .. My first patient. She had a tag around her neck saying she was confused. We talked and we assessed her as ok but needing help. CERT members work rapidly not dwelling on any one patient for very long. Too keep her in place we asked her to stay where she was and yell if the fire truck arrived on scene and she seemed happy to have something to do. We tagged her green.. Within a few steps here comes another one with about the same problem so we made her an honorary Cert and asked if she would help us... Those 2 ladies agreed and we took them to the Triage area where they could help with the injured as we retrieved them.

Ed now assigned Rod McCready and myself as the triage team. Behind us would come Bill Furgason and John Spangler as the rescue team.  Using procedures we had been taught, Rod and I searched every room for victims assessing their level of injury and marking them according their degree of severity then..moving on to the next. Behind us the rescue team was gathering victims and bringing them to the safe triage area for treatment.

As we felt each door for the heat of fire we came upon a victim covered in structural debris. Unfortunately he had no pulse and no breathing.. Marked as “passed on” and move on to the next room. Smoke! We smell smoke. Opening the door we find smoke being created for us by another volunteer and a simulated fire. Working as a team, Rod and I grab a fire extinguisher and put the fire out.

The next room has the Diamond symbol for hazardous material on it. We can’t go in because we have been taught not to go in such places. .. We yell, “Anybody in there??”.  No answer. Move on. We are back in the hall now and hear cries for help coming from the next hall way that we are headed into. We answer, “Emergency Rescue Team .. We’re coming.” Using our through search techniques we will have to search 2 more rooms before we get to the cries for help. As we leave a room we put an x on it to indicate it’s been looked at. It’s like a maze in the dark. Without marking on the rooms you would be doing the same ones over again. Finally we clear the two rooms on our route and find ourselves in a hall blocked with fallen beams with people on the other side calling for help. The damage is beyond our capability to remove. We ask the victims if there is another way in and there is. We will have to come in another door. “We’ll be back we tell them”. Then we make our way back to the safe triage area where Bill and John have been bringing patients and report what we have done and found to Ed Simon... The exercise ended here.

It got to be pretty intense roll playing and had a very real feel about it. We all learned that we need to practice and iron out our procedures. We also learned we can do this and we can do it safely.

There will be another beginning CERT class coming in the future. The plan calls for our first group to help train the next group. So maybe we will see you soon?

RT

During The course of building the new computer lab it is necessary to remove the older equipment now in service. With that in mind Jim Rose and I spent today disconnecting and moving the old computers and associated equipment to a table out by the pool table. It is there for your inspection until Thursday, January 26th.

On Thursday at 1:00pm we will draw names and the first place will be able to pick any one complete computer system or any individual piece of equipment they want. 2nd place will then be offered the same deal and so on until all have what they want. The remaining components will then be sent to the dump.

Meanwhile, You will notice that there are 2 new computers hooked up and operational in the lab as well as the old one hooked to the internet by dial-up connection. If you want to play with the new additions it’s ok go ahead. There are places for other computers as they become available from Jim Dobbs. The places are set the way we want them for classes please do not move or borrow the equipment that is there. Please do not bring any other equipment to the lab room.

Ron Gibbs gave us a wireless router.. new in the box. This means we may send back the one we just bought. It also means we are one step closer to wifi high speed internet throughout the clubhouse.. Thanks Ron for your considerate donation.

We are making progress all be it slowly and have had a few setbacks but the good out weighs the bad.

There has been a movement of the scale and exercise bike to the card/craft room to make room for the lab expansion. We got permission from management to do that. The TV will remain in the lab as it is a valuable tool for the instructor to display from his/her laptop what is being taught. Also, the card room has no cable connection.

In trying to make sense out of the corrupt-lobbying scandal that's been rocking the nation's capital, don't just follow the money.

Follow the airplanes.

If Republicans and Democrats were sincere about cleaning up congressional ethics, they would prohibit the most powerful members of Congress from accepting offers of princely trips by private jet. These are highly prized perks, routinely provided by moneyed interests seeking favors in Washington, D.C. Yet a ban on such pampering is nowhere to be found in the reform proposals laid out this week by House and Senate leaders from both political parties."

COMPUTER UPDATE FOR THE NEW COMPUTER LAB

RT

Jim Dodds is the technician handling the refurbishing and updating of our Georgia Pacific donated computers. Jim lives with his father here in the park. They will be moving soon to Montana as they have sold their home here at LVH. Jim also is running programs on each of the computers that check their condition before he puts them into service. He is doing all this for free. Georgia Pacific Donated the computers for free.

Jim has both good and bad news for us. There were 10 computers and 1 server computer in our gift. The server is not going to be usable for our application so we are sending it to the recycle bin. 2 of the computers so far have problems that make them to expensive to repair. We have decided to send them to the recycle bin too. Four of the computers have been tested and loaded with new programs and Windows 2000 operating system and are ready for us to use.

Jim is working on the remaining four and suggests we keep our fingers crossed. Also, there are some problems with some of the CD drives but we are not going to address those problems now as we can use them without that piece of equipment.

Meanwhile, we have ordered the equipment necessary to network our computers together and expect it to arrive by Monday. You can expect to see new computers showing up at the lab soon and old equipment being readied for raffle.

There are plenty of 'how-to' tomes that spout a number of serviceable garden rules. Undeniably, rules are useful to give direction and discipline, especially when one is starting out.

But after a while, experience becomes the great teacher, and one of the things it can teach us is that too much rigidity in following rules is not necessarily a good thing. After all, departing from the norm and trying new things is one of the definitions of creativity.

Here, for example, are 10 rules ripe for the breaking.

1. Get rid of the lawn. This has been the mantra for the past few years as we strive to save water and reduce labor. But the truth is, a little bit of green is a beautiful foil for plants, and one shouldn't be made to feel overly guilty about enjoying some turf. My advice is that if you like lawn, just downsize and water smartly."

MONTGOMERY , Ala. -- Disasters can be hard to deal with for anyone, but for those who are affected by Alzheimer's disease, the experience can be even scarier and more unsettling. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Alabama Emergency Management Agency recommend that caregivers assisting people with dementia prepare for disasters by planning ahead.

While everyone should have a preparedness strategy for disasters, there are some important steps families and other caregivers can take when they are considering how to look after persons with Alzheimer's.

The Alzheimer's Association recommends the following:

* Establish a safe place to go before a disaster happens.
* Alert family and friends when changing locations.
* Have copies of the person with dementia's medical history, medications and physician information.
* Purchase extra medication.
* Prepare an emergency kit with necessary items (visit www.fema.gov for items to include).

If relocating after a disaster, the change in location plus unfamiliar noises and activities may cause those with Alzheimer's increased stress and confusion . To reduce the trauma, practice these tips:

* Be calm and supportive --remain flexible and patient. Don't leave the person with Alzheimer's alone or with someone who does not know they have dementia.
* Be aware of health needs --ensure proper nutrition and hydration and try to find a doctor and pharmacy as soon as possible.
* Create a safe environment --spend extra time with the person, maintain daily routines, and limit news media exposure to the disaster.

The home crowd, which helped force the New York Giants into 11 false-start penalties in a game this season, played a similar role in Saturday's divisional playoff win over Washington and figures to be even louder Sunday in the NFC championship game. "

USATODAY.com - Plan to scrap old ships stirs pollution worries: "Plan to scrap old ships stirs pollution worries
By Brad Knickerbocker, The Christian Science Monitor
ASHLAND, Ore. — Oregon prides itself on its coast. Wild and pristine. Open to the public and not fenced off by wealthy landowners. But in recent years, the area also has seen steep declines in traditional industries, timber and fishing.
The Oregon coast is known for its pristine shorelines. The Oregon coast is known for its pristine shorelines.

So a proposal to haul old ships here for salvage and recycling presents a classic case of economic development vs. environmental protection. The new business would mean well-paying jobs turning ship hulls into valuable scrap metals. But it also brings with it concerns about toxic materials — asbestos, waste oil, lead paint, mercury, PCBs, and radioactive substances — seen as threats to marine life.

Locally, the issue comes to a head this week as the Port Commission in Newport, Ore., decides whether to let the proposal proceed. "

Computer Update..

RT

At the Social Club meeting we presented our request to help finance the new computer lab. It will be developed in 3 phases and the money needed for Phase one is $300. The Social Club voted with all yay votes and a few abstentions to cover that cost.

Jim Dodds is providing all the technical know how and so we are using his advice on what to buy. Today I placed an order for all the phase 1 parts. They were offering several good rebates on the stuff. So, when we get these parts we will send in for the rebates. When the rebates come back we will be able to use that money to purchase some WiFi access point stuff for the clubhouse and still stay in budget.  Spent $276.  Rebates maybe $70.

Jim has put that Correl paint on 4 computers so far.. You painters are going to love this. I oil paint and am looking forward to giving it a spin myself.

When you have computers networked together it is necessary to name them to keep them in order and for troubleshooting purposes. So far Jim has finished updating to Windows 2000 on two and mentioned 2 others in a comment below. They are all named after famous chipmunks.. Alvin, Dale, Chip etc.  He said Alvin and Dale are ready to come home to the clubhouse. We (Jacky and I)will be missing tomorrow ..have to go to Salem.

We will be putting coffee cans with slotted lids in the clubhouse soon. You can write your name and put it in the appropriate can for the older computers we are going to give a way to make room for all our new chipmunks. We will have other free give a ways for the extra monitors and printers. Look for the poster with dates and rules at the clubhouse soon.

This is a second notice of the exercise. We had some email address problems and I hope it has been fixed. See you all on Saturday. Please come to the Armory building next door to the old city hall. They have graciously allowed us to stage their as the old city hall has no heat.

We have scheduled the final exercise to be Saturday, January 21st from 9:00 am until about noon. We will have the event at the old city hall, 810 SW Alder St. We will be having a short review of the curriculum that we have learned to date as we will be needing the information during the exercise. Please do not worry about pass/fail. This is a learning exercise so its more important to learn than to test.

There will be four components to the exercise:

1. CERT organization and setting up teams and leaders.

2. Triage and first aid.

3. Fire extinguishing.

4. Cribbing and search and rescue.

Just a heads up on the old city hall, it has not been occupied for several years so dress in comfortable clothing that is not formal wear. And no Larry, Nancy will not let us burn it down.

Please bring your CERT kits and I would suggest water bottles as the water fountain works at the city hall but I would not trust it. If you have any questions, either call me or email me.

I also would like everyone to attend the City Council meeting on Monday night, February 6th at 7:30 pm so that they can recognize all your hard work.

It's unacceptable that some low-income seniors have left pharmacies without getting their medicine
Tuesday, January 17, 2006

No senior citizen should have to endure the anguish that's hit hundreds of low-income Oregonians trying to get medical prescriptions filled since the beginning of January.

And no pharmacist should have to endure the heartache and heartburn of trying to help such seniors get medicine under the federal government's new prescription drug program.

Unfortunately, the new Medicare benefit is off to a rocky start since Jan. 1, not just in Oregon but all across the nation. Millions of low-income Americans who get both Medicare and Medicaid, and whose Medicaid drug coverage ended Dec. 31, have encountered a shock at their pharmacies."

WHAT I DID TODAY

WHAT I DID TODAY...
RT

Today was a computer kind of day. I made up and submitted requests for the clubhouse for the entire 2006 year. Remember you folks had a meeting to decide on what we do for 2006 so that we could reserve the clubhouse? So those requests were made up and  emailed to Larry Henson today.

Then all those same events had to be put on the calendar with there respective times and dates. You will find our electronic calendar up to date through December 2006 with all the events. As more info about specifics come in we will up date those events. But just for now I would recommend you check the January 29th date for the catered Chinese New Year dinner... unbelievable. Just click on the (click here) statement and look at that menu from Kam Meng (the restaurant next to Shirley’s on the bay front. Oh! A slight refresher... at the bottom of the calendar as it comes up on our page you can click and see the monthly view of dates and can even navigate to every month for 3 years ahead.. You won’t hurt a thing go ahead and play with it.

Speaking of the Chinese New Year dinner we also made posters for it and they will be up in the clubhouse tomorrow. Of course you can’t have a catered dinner without tickets to sell so we made those up to.. They are going to cost $10 per person but you need to take a look at that menu.. No kidding.

Then Nancy Lee Moore and Milt Sadusky have been waiting patiently for months to get their annual pass cards so we made those up too and will have them ready for them tomorrow.

In the middle of all this my printer bit the dust. So I have been saving everything to a floppy disk and running back and forth to the Davi’s house to use their printer.

Of course there is the regular task of keeping the web pages flowing and that all sort of kept me here at the computer until 1:04 am. Why am I not sleepy?

Yesterday we went to a party here in the park and while we were there someone asked Jacky why a tan van has been seen driving around with the LVH Neighborhood Watch Patrol Signs on... Thought there might be something fishy going on.... Well the answer is Charles Burke is driving around with them on. He has volunteered to help with that. Think about it... People see those signs and after awhile the word gets around town that we must have a private patrol up here. That is the kind of press we can use. We take turns with them now. What Charles has suggested is if enough people would volunteer to put them on for a month and then pass them along it would appear that we have a really large patrol. Thing is all you have to do is put them on your car.. We aren’t asking you to patrol anything.. We just want to show the community at large that there is a large presence here on the hill...

This is really an awesome sight to watch if you've never had the chance Very fascinating.

Tomb of the Unknown Soldier
sent by email by Charles Burke

1. How many steps does the guard during his walk across the
tomb of the Unknowns and why?

21 steps. It alludes to the twenty-one gun salute, which is the
highest honor given any military or foreign dignitary.

2. How long does he hesitate after his about face to begin his
return walk and why?

& 21 seconds for the same reason as answer number 1

3. Why are his gloves wet?

His gloves are moistened to prevent his losing his grip on the
rifle.

4. Does he carry his rifle on the same shoulder all the time
and if not, why not?

He carries the rifle on the shoulder away from the tomb.
After his march across the path, he executes an about face
and moves the rifle to the outside shoulder.

5. How often are the guards changed?

Guards are changed every thirty minutes,
twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year.

6. What are the physical traits of the guard limited to?

For a person to apply for guard duty at the tomb, he must be
between 5' 10" and 6' 2" tall and his waist size cannot exceed 30." Other
requirements of the Guard: They must commit 2 years of life to guard the
tomb, live in a barracks under the tomb, and cannot drink any alcohol on
or off duty for the rest of their lives. They cannot swear in public for the
rest of their lives and cannot disgrace the uniform {fighting} or the tomb in
any way. After two years, the guard is given a wreath pin that is worn on
their lapel signifying they served as guard of the tomb. There are only
400 presently worn. The guard must obey these rules for the rest of their
lives or give up the wreath pin.

The shoes are specially made with very thick soles to keep the heat
and cold from their feet. There are metal heel plates that extend to the
top of the shoe in order to make the loud click as they come to a halt.
There are no wrinkles, folds or lint on the uniform. Guards dress for duty
in front of a full-length mirror.

The first six months of duty a guard cannot talk to anyone, nor
watch TV. All off duty time is spent studying the 175 notable people laid
to rest in Arlington National Cemetery . A guard must memorize who they are
and where they are interred. Among the notables are: President Taft, Joe
E. Lewis {the boxer} and Medal of Honor winner Audie Murphy, {the most
decorated soldier of WWII} of Hollywood fame.

Every guard spends five hours a day getting his uniforms ready for
guard duty.

ETERNAL REST GRANT THEM O LORD, AND LET PERPETUAL LIGHT SHINE UPON THEM.

In 2003 as Hurricane Isabelle was approaching Washington , DC , our
US Senate/House took 2 days off with anticipation of the storm. On the ABC
evening news, it was reported that because of the dangers from the
hurricane, the military members assigned the duty of guarding the Tomb of
the Unknown Soldier were given permission to suspend the assignment. They
respectfully declined the offer, "No way, Sir!" Soaked to the skin,
marching in the pelting rain of a tropical storm, they said that guarding
the Tomb was not just an assignment, it was the highest honor that can be
afforded to a serviceperson. The tomb has been patrolled continuously,
24/7, since 1930.

God Bless and keep them
