KETCHIKAN -- Whale researchers say it was highly unusual for a killer whale to bump a 12-year-old boy splashing in shallow water near Ketchikan.

Ellis Miller found himself face-to-face with an orca charging at him in 4 feet of water Saturday in Helm Bay. The animal, estimated to be more than 25 feet long, bumped but did not bite him.

'I looked underwater and there was this huge head right in front of me,' Ellis told the Ketchikan Daily News."

Be alerted to all emergencies in and around Newport

RT

A short time ago we bought a Public Alert radio. Now that it is up and programmed we thought we would give you a description of what it does.

This radio receives both CIVIL and Weather emergency alerts and is broadcast from NOAA radio towers across the USA. There are more than 900 of these towers. Each tower is programmed to transmit information about your local area and national emergency information.

When NOAA broadcasts a message it displays an Led light “Advisory (yellow)”, “Watch (orange)”, or “Warning (red)”. External handicapped devices can also be hooked to the unit. There is an alert siren that will sound depending on what you want to set it for. You can block many events that do not interest you and that you don’t want to be bothered with such as Avalanche Warnings or weekly tests, etc. The alarm siren can also be hooked up to a public address system.

Working with other federal agencies and the FCC’s Emergency Alert System (EAS) NOAA is the single source for weather and civil emergency information available to the public.

Here are some examples of the more than 80 possible broadcasts that this system will make:

BIOLOGICAL HAZARD WARNING
SPECIAL MARINE WARNING
BOIL WATER WARNING
SPECIAL WEATHER ADVISORY
BLIZZARD WARNING
SHELTER IN PLACE
CHILD ABDUCTION EMERGENCY
SEVERE WEATHER
CIVIL EMERGENCY WARNING
TSUNAMI WATCH
COASTAL FLOOD WARNING
VOLCANO WARNING
CHEMICAL HAZARD WARNING
WILD FIRE WARNING
CONTAMINATED WATER
CONTAGIOUS DISEASE WARNING
EMERGENCY ACTION NOTIFICATION
EARTHQUAKE WARNING
EVACUATION
FLASH FLOOD
FIRE WARNING
FREEZE WARNING
HAZARDOUS MATERIALS WARNING
HIGH WINDS
LOCAL AREA EMERGENCY
LAW ENFORCEMENT WARNING
LANDSLIDE WARNING

This all cost about $46 for the best unit I could buy at Amazon .com
The name of the product is

FIRST ALERT
Model WX-167
Public Alert Radio

Personally, given the reasonable price of the radio and all that it offers I think this is a must have item for all the residents in our community as well as all of Newport. Trying to set up some kind of calling system to alert everyone depends on people receiving and passing on the message as well as the phones working. This radio will run for 24 hours (on battery) without power and has a critical memory that holds all of the essential information even if it totally loses power.

In the hour before the ghost from his past floated into Portland, Robert Mitchell sat in a living-room chair while his oldest daughter puttered outside, hanging a welcome sign on the front of the house and sticking a small Japanese flag next to the American counterpart on the front stoop.

Breast Cancer stamp

New Breast Cancer Stamp ... You can help!
via email from Charles and Frieda Burke...

As you may be aware, the US Postal Service recently released its new "Fund the Cure" stamp to help fund breast cancer research. The stamp was designed by Ethel Kessler of Bethesda, Maryland. It is important that we take a stand against this disease that affects so many of our mothers, sisters and friends.

Instead of the routine 37 cents for a stamp, this one cost 40 cents. The additional 3 cents will go to breast cancer research. A "normal" book costs $7.40. This one is only $8.00. It takes a few minutes in line at the Post Office and means so much. If all stamps are sold, it will raise an additional $35,000,000 for this vital research.

Just as important as the money is our support. What a statement it would make if the stamp outsold the lottery this week. What a statement it would make that we care. I would urge you to do two things TODAY:

1. Go out and purchase some of these stamps.

2. E-mail your friends to do the same. We all know women and their families whose lives are turned upside-down by breast cancer. It takes so little to do so much in this drive. I think we can all afford the additional 60 cents the new book costs.

The new games put the state on course to pocket an extra $60 million a year; but some fear they're also creating more addicts

The Oregon Lottery's new electronic slot games are paying off big for the state while lightening the wallets of players in record amounts.

Video lottery sales climbed by 20 percent over the same time last year after the new games were installed in bars and restaurants in late May. And even though summer is usually the slowest time of year for the lottery, video gambling sales recently topped $13 million, a weekly record.

The increase is good news for state government, which is on track to meet its budget projections of gaining an extra $60 million a year in profits from the slot games."

Most folks here are getting “Feet Wet” by discussing questions  in the comments and learning how to use that feature. We have tried over the years to get everyone interested to sign up and write articles on the web page and regard the recent discussions in the comments as a step forward in that direction. But writing on the page has always been a learning process that some find to be daunting. Now, there is nothing left for you to learn ... it’s all done automatically.

Today, there has come a new innovation that strips away all the difficulties of learning how to write on a blog. This new step in communication asks of you only one thing..... “Can you write what you want on Microsoft Word?

If you can write on “Word” you only need to click the “publish button” on the toolbar that you can now download to your Microsoft Word.  It’s simple as that.

You also have to go through signing up for an account “User Name” and a “password” But that’s it.

Since you will be writing with your word processor you can use all the features like “spell check”, fonts and all the other features. If you would like to give it a try simply send me an email and I will take care of getting you up and running.

clarkhoward.com: Clarchives clarkhoward - Clarchives August 09, 2005: "Are you paying the highest interest rates?
Cardweb.com recently learned the highest interest rates from the ten largest credit card companies. These are the rates companies impose based on “cross default clauses.” Cross default clauses are any negative marks on your credit report that allow credit card companies to raise your interest rate. Here are the rates: Chase – 30%; Citibank – 30%; Bank of America – 30%; MBNA – 20%; Discover – 26%; Capital One – 27%; American Express – 28%; HSBC – 28%; Providian – 30% and Wells Fargo – 24%. So, if you have a credit card with one of these cards and you carry a balance, you run the risk of paying a 30 percent interest rate. In addition, there is no appeals process to the cross default clauses. If it’s an error on your credit report, credit card companies don’t care. They can still charge that rate. The only power you have is to pay your bills in full and on time. If you do that, you will never be charged these exorbitant rates."

My Two Cents on the Social Club..

In my opinion... ron thomas

As the time for the Social Club meeting approaches we have many items on the agenda that I would like to see considered in a different way. Of course my way of thinking is just that. It is not necessarily the way you should think.

Here is my first thought about the Social Club. It should have a definition of itself written into its bylaws in bold red letters. If I were to make that definition I would put it this way..... The Social Club's sole function at LVH is the entertainment of the residents of LVH.

I think it should not be involved in park political and grievance procedures. When it tries to do that it tries to becomes an Association. It loses site of its goal.. the entertainment of the residents. Meetings become a place of discontent and degenerate into groups backing various factions of arguments. Such an arrangement creates a culture of folks angry with the Social Club. Meeting attendance and activity attendance drop accordingly.

I think the board of the Social Club should decide if an issue is to be brought up before the Social Club is an entertainment or a fund raising issue or an occasional philantropical issue. If it isn't then those that would request time or start speaking on issues not germane to the stated goal of the Social Club (in my opinion the entertainment of residents) should be politely told that the Social Club is not the forum for their issue.

BUT!!!! There is always a but isn't there? Some say there is no other community organization that
exists here at LVH to present these other kinds of issues.... And, that's the problem..... Isn't it?

Until the Social Club starts turning down requests for involvement in other community affairs it will always be embroiled in the turmoil that those issues cause.

The Community created the Social Club.. Why can't the Community call a town hall meeting by putting posters on the bulletin board, articles in the Newsletter and on the website and notices in the mailboxes to discuss issues, form committees and other community organizations? For instance you may be concerned about leases ... Why try to force the people at a Social Club meeting, who have come together to discuss ways to have community entertainment, to take up an unrelated cause? This will just result in lower attendance at Social Club meetings.

I'm not convinced that our community is apathetic at all. I think the root cause in lack of interest in the Social Club lies in the way it good heartedly over reaches itself moving into affairs that it has no business being in. That ends up alienating people who came to have a Social experience and instead find themselves embroiled in an issue that they are not interested in.

If you want your cause to have any teeth you need to call on the community to get those interested together at a meeting about your cause and stay on topic. Don't pull another subject out of the hat and try to interest people in something they didn't come to hear about. If you have folks interested in your cause one of the very things that needs to be discussed before you close out your meeting is how you intend to finance your group. In short you then have a dedicated group with a goal.

Because the Social Club is solvent people have started looking upon its treasury as a means to finance a myriad of issues not even remotely tied to the entertainment of the community. That money was donated and earned over the years for the entertainment of all the folks at LVH. Not as a handy fund to raid for funding whenever a non social Club issue comes up.

That's my two cents... RT

Business 2.0 :: Magazine Article :: What's Next :: Free Wi-Fi? Get Ready for GoogleNet.: "What if Google (GOOG) wanted to give Wi-Fi access to everyone in America? And what if it had technology capable of targeting advertising to a user’s precise location? The gatekeeper of the world’s information could become one of the globe’s biggest Internet providers and one of its most powerful ad sellers, basically supplanting telecoms in one fell swoop. Sounds crazy, but how might Google go about it?

First it would build a national broadband network -- let's call it the GoogleNet -- massive enough to rival even the country's biggest Internet service providers. Business 2.0 has learned from telecom insiders that Google is already building such a network, though ostensibly for many reasons. For the past year, it has quietly been shopping for miles and miles of 'dark,' or unused, fiber-optic cable across the country from wholesalers such as New York’s AboveNet. It's also acquiring superfast connections from Cogent Communications and WilTel, among others, between East Coast cities including Atlanta, Miami, and New York. Such large-scale purchases are unprecedented for an Internet company, but Google's timing is impeccable. The rash of telecom bankruptcies has freed up a ton of bargain-priced capacity, which Google needs as it prepares to unleash a flood of new, bandwidth-hungry applications. These offerings could include everything from a digital-video database to on-demand television programming."

Jim and Bonnie have been in Kentucky since early June with their daughter. They have been helping because the Dr. had restricted their daughter to complete bed rest.

They have chronicled their stay as long and hot and wistfully longed for the cool coast breeze of Newport. We expect that they will hurry back as soon as they can get Mommy and baby on solid footing.

Congrats to Mommy, Grandmommy and Gramps.

Restaurant removed from LVH U Rate It
Restaurant list...

rt

Due to other reports and our own experience last night we have removed a Newport restaurant from our recommended list... Remember, the only way to make it on to the list is someone emails us with a good report. Bad reports cancel out good ones.

Bad reports has caused this restaurant to be removed from the list.

If a restaurant is not on the list... no one has emailed in a favorable report on it or it has received enough bad reports to cancel out the good ones. Therfore, If it is not listed you can consider it in limbo and make your choice accordingly.

Also this page rates service to our residents. If a company provides good service and gets a good recommendation... It goes on the list... Bad reports subtract from the good untill the business is removed from the recommended list.

Your reports are confidential and are deleted after they earn a business a star or cause them to lose one.

If you don't see a contractor listed no one wrote in to recommend them or they have been removed because of to many bad reports.

We do not critcise any of these services and businesses we only tally good, warm fuzzy reports for your perusal based on the concensus of reports received. We do not recommend anybody only tally the negative and positive reports of our readers and post the positive results only.

Your team's schedule at your fingertips

Looking for an easy way to keep up with your team's schedule? Go download Yahoo! Widgets (formerly known as Konfabulator) and then add the outstanding FanWidget liveSchedule to your desktop.

The widget is programmed to update the schedule list on it's own - adding new teams as they are ready and updating your team's schedule every week with the game results. The team selection is limited right now, but they intend to have all the teams updated before the start of the season.

And if you REALLY want the latest on college football, download this RSS widget and add our Fanblogs headline feed or your team's news feed.
