The Comics

The daily comics were beginning to not be funny so we changed some of them. If you have a favorite strip write in the comments and I will try to get it attached.

Ice Age Art: 35,000-Year-Old Mammoth Sculpture Found in Germany - International - SPIEGEL ONLINE - News: "In southwestern Germany, an American archaeologist and his German colleagues have found the oldest mammoth-ivory carving known to modern science. And even at 35,000 years old, it's still intact.

Archaeologists at the University of Tbingen have recovered the first entirely intact woolly mammoth figurine from the Swabian Jura, a plateau in the state of Baden-Wrttemberg, thought to have been made by the first modern humans some 35,000 years ago. It is believed to be the oldest ivory carving ever found. 'You can be sure,' Tbingen archaeologist Nicholas J. Conard told SPIEGEL ONLINE, 'that there has been art in Swabia for over 35,000 years.'"

Take It Slow, Don’t Have Many Kids and Enjoy Cold Water - New York Times

Take It Slow, Don’t Have Many Kids and Enjoy Cold Water - New York Times: "ESKIMO hunters killed a bowhead whale off the coast of Alaska last month and began to chainsaw their way into its blubber. They stopped when the saw hit the tip of an old harpoon lodged deep inside the whale. Historians identified it last week as part of a bomb lance, a harpoon manufactured for only a few years in the late 1800s in New Bedford, Mass. Whalers probably fired it at the bowhead around 1890, when the whale was probably a teenager, and it carried the harpoon for the next 115 years before finally being killed by a modern one."

Millions of Missing Birds, Vanishing in Plain Sight - New York Times: "Last week, the Audubon Society released a new report describing the sharp and startling population decline of some of the most familiar and common birds in America: several kinds of sparrows, the Northern bobwhite, the Eastern meadowlark, the common grackle and the common tern. The average decline of the 20 species in the Audubon Society’s report is 68 percent."

Study results of Java tsunami killed 600 persons | Huliq: Breaking News: "Study results of Java tsunami killed 600 persons

Though categorized as magnitude 7.8, the earthquake could scarcely be felt by beachgoers that afternoon. A low tide and wind-driven waves disguised the signs of receding water, so when the tsunami struck, it caught even lifeguards by surprise. That contributed to the death toll of more than 600 persons in Java, Indonesia.

“The general assumption was that if you were near the coast where the earthquake took place, you would feel it and be able to run to higher ground,” said Hermann Fritz, first author of a new Geophysical Research Letters paper about the July 17, 2006 tsunami. “This event caught people by surprise and showed that it’s not always that simple.”"

UPDATE: FDA warning expands list of contaminated toothpaste from China - The Emergency Email & Wireless Network .......... www. EmergencyEmail.ORG ...

UPDATE: FDA warning expands list of contaminated toothpaste from China - The Emergency Email & Wireless Network .......... www. EmergencyEmail.ORG ........ NewsEmergency.com: "UPDATE: FDA warning expands list of contaminated toothpaste from China
Late Friday the U. S. Food and Drug administration released information expanding the DEG toothpaste warning...
Introduction

FDA has found a poisonous chemical, diethylene glycol (DEG), in certain toothpastes imported from China. The agency increased its scrutiny and testing of imported toothpaste and dental products after receiving reports in late May 2007 of contaminated Chinese dental products found in several countries, including Panama.

Q: Why are consumers being warned about toothpaste?

FDA is strongly warning consumers to avoid using any toothpaste labeled as made in China because we have found levels as high as 3-4% of a poisonous chemical, diethylene glycol (DEG), in Chinese toothpaste.

Q: What is diethylene glycol, or DEG?

Diethylene glycol (DEG), also known as 'diglycol' is a poisonous chemical used in antifreeze and as a solvent. It does not belong in toothpaste even at small concentrations.

The agency is warning consumers to avoid using tubes of toothpaste labeled as made in China and, through an import alert, is stopping all suspect toothpaste from entering the United States.

The coming Neighborhood Watch Channel Change

(Having our cake and eating it too!)

Why change? Passerby’s, conversations, children playing with the radio as if it were a toy, profanity, etc. This interferes with the good nature of those that will listen to the radio for the community’s sake.

Wayne and Liz Hill and I recently preformed some experiments with our FRS radios and we were surprised to find out how the privacy channels actually work.. Hope this doesn’t get to confusing. If it does use the “comments” to ask questions. We found those with the radios that do not have privacy channels are still going to be able to receive announcements!

How it works.....

  • When you tune your radio to FRS Ch 6 _privacy__ code 16.....

  • You will not hear anybody that transmits on any other FRS CH 6 code but CH6 code 16.

  • However! When you transmit on CH16.6 you will be heard on CH6 and on Ch 16.6. That means the older radios will still hear everything.

What this means is that if you have a radio that has only CH6 but no privacy code capability ... You will hear all Neighborhood and CERT announcements on your radio but you will not be heard if you call on Ch6. For those folks.... You will have to call a block Captain during normal times if you want to know something but during emergency conditions.. CERT will tune a spare radio to CH6 only and listen for your calls.

CERT Call

Just before 11:00am this morning Donna Talarski called about a neighbor, Charlie Curry, She hadn't seen him for a couple of days and his bedroom light was on all night. She called from Portland and asked that we check on him. A phone call yielded nothing but an answering machine.

Wayne Hill and myself went to the house and began looking in where we could and calling Charlie.. No results. Wayne decided to check the garage to see if his car was there.. It was gone.. Sighing with relief we called off.

This might be a good argument for telling your block Capt you are going to be gone. If you listened to the radio talk between Wayne, Liz and myself would you say so in the comments? That gives me an idea of how many listeners are on the network... Thanx, Ron.
