ON STAR

We will be developing a new communications technique for our CERT team. Here is how we think it will work....

Some folks in the park probably have On-Star service installed in their cars. Here is what CERT wants to do... We would like to know if you have ON Star in your car. If we had a dire emergency with all the phones (cell as well as conventional) out of order we can use ON STAR because it works by satellite. Now what we would do is collect phone numbers of people stranded here and call their relatives and tell them how we are doing so we don't get our loved ones all panicked.

Whada ya think?
CH 6.16

The new park Neighborhood Watch/CERT channel is so quiet. No chatter at night.. I've monitored all 24 hours for the last two days. Never lost a peck of sleep. That is the eventual goal... to have it monitored 24/7. What a program you folks will have when that happens. This allows volunteers not to be aggravated by jibber jabber from folks passing by. The volunteer knows when the talking starts it's 99% sure it is someone in the park. Beleive me it will be a lot easier to find people willing to do the monitoring now. Maybe we could have a couple of new monitors a week and share the responsibility around. Whada ya think?

We haven't forgot you folks stuck on CH 6 ... Remember you can hear everything that is said on the new channel on just plain old ch 6. You just can't talk to CH 6.16. That means you will have to call a block captain if you want to ask a question. BUT... if we get a real emergency we will monitor and speak to both channels. CERT has extra radios just for that eventuality.

IS-317 Introduction to Community Emergency Response Teams

Editors note:
The below website is an introduction to the community CERT course that will be taught locally in September. It is a good place for prospective new members to get an idea of the course they will be taking and of CERT overall organization. For Community members it is a place to gain valuable insight into what our CERT team is about. Give it a try. If it appeals to you come to our Wednesday Drills at 11:00 am at the clubhouse. Yes, every Wednesday. Our community team believes that they can only be prepared through constant training. We have been doing that for 2 years now. Welcome.. we need you regardless of what you can do and what you cannot.

We will put this link on the webpage permanently. Maybe our new html code class will give it a try.. Here is your challenge Barb and Ginger.

Secrecy at Nuclear Agency Is Criticized by Lawmakers - New York Times

Secrecy at Nuclear Agency Is Criticized by Lawmakers - New York Times: "In a puddle, the uranium is not particularly hazardous, but if it formed a more spherical shape, the commission says, it could become a “critical mass,” a quantity and shape of nuclear fuel sufficient to sustain a chain reaction, in this case outside a reactor.

According to the letter sent by the lawmakers, the puddle, containing about nine gallons, reached to within four feet of an elevator pit. Had it flowed into the pit and reached a depth of several inches, it would have been in a shape that might have supported a chain reaction. The letter from the congressmen says the agency’s report suggests “that it was merely a matter of luck that a criticality accident did not occur.”"

Global Warming and Your Wallet - New York Times

Global Warming and Your Wallet - New York Times: "But for all the talk about warming, leading politicians have yet to educate their constituents (and their colleagues) about an unpleasant and inescapable truth: any serious effort to fight warming will require everyone to pay more for energy. According to most scientists, the long-term costs of doing nothing — flooding, famine, drought — would be even higher than the costs of acting now. But unless Americans understand and accept the trade-off — higher prices today to avoid calamity later — the requisite public support for real change is unlikely to build."

A great poetic retrospective by an anonymous somebody that should be familiar to anyone over the age of 60 or so. Enjoy!

Long ago and far away,
In a land that time forgot,
Before the days of Dylan
Or the dawn of Camelot.
There lived a race of innocents,
And they were you and me,
Long ago and far away
In the Land of Sandra Dee.

Oh, there was truth and goodness
In that land where we were born,
Where navels were for oranges,
And Peyton Place was porn.
For Ike was in the White House,
And Hoss was on TV,
And God was in his heaven
In the Land of Sandra Dee.

We longed for love and romance,
And waited for the prince,
And Eddie Fisher married Liz,
And no one's seen him since.
We danced to "Little Darlin'",
And sang to "Stagger Lee"
And cried for Buddy Holly
In the Land of Sandra Dee.

Only girls wore earrings then,
And three was one too many,
And only boys wore flat-top cuts,
Except for Jean McKinney.
And only in our wildest dreams
Did we expect to see
A boy named George with Lipstick
In the Land of Sandra Dee.

We fell for Frankie Avalon,
Annette was oh, so nice,
And when they made a movie,
They never made it twice.
We didn't have a Star Trek Five,
Or Psycho Two and Three,
Or Rocky-Rambo Twenty
In the Land of Sandra Dee.

Miss Kitty had a heart of gold,
And Chester had a limp,
And Reagan was a Democrat
Whose co-star was a chimp.
We had a Mr Wizard,
But not a Mr T,
And Oprah couldn't talk yet
In the Land of Sandra Dee.

We had our share of heroes,
We never thought they'd go,
At least not Bobby Darin,
Or Marilyn Monroe.
For youth was still eternal,
And life was yet to be,
And Elvis was forever,
In the Land of Sandra Dee.

We'd never heard of microwaves,
Or telephones in cars,
And babies might be bottle-fed,
But they weren't grown in jars.
And pumping iron got wrinkles out,
And "gay" meant fancy-free,
And dorms were never coed
In the Land of Sandra Dee.

We hadn't seen enough of jets
To talk about the lag,
And microchips were what was left at
The bottom of the bag.
And hardware was a box of nails,
And bytes came from a flea,
And rocket ships were fiction
In the Land of Sandra Dee.

Buicks came with portholes,
And side shows came with freaks,
And bathing suits came big enough
To cover both your cheeks.
And Coke came just in bottles,
And skirts came to the knee,
And Castro came to power
In the Land of Sandra Dee!

We had no Crest with fluoride,
We had no Hill Street Blues,
We all wore super-structure bras
Designed by Howard Hughes.
We had no patterned pantyhose
Or Lipton herbal tea
Or prime-time ads for condoms
In the Land of Sandra Dee.

And middle-aged was thirty-five
And old was forty-three,
And ancient were our parents
In the Land of Sandra Dee.

But all things have a season,
Or so we've heard them say,
And now instead of Maybelline
We swear by Retin-A.
And they send us invitations
To join AARP,
We've come a long way, baby,
From the Land of Sandra Dee.

So now we face a brave new world
In slightly larger jeans,
And wonder why they're using
Smaller print in magazines.
And we tell our children's children
Of the way it used to be,
Long ago and far away
In the Land of Sandra Dee.

Elizabeth H. Blackburn - Telomeres - Aging - New York Times

Elizabeth H. Blackburn - Telomeres - Aging - New York Times: "Q. What are telomeres and telomerase?

A. Telomeres are the protective caps at the ends of chromosomes in cells. Chromosomes carry the genetic information. Telomeres are buffers. They are like the tips of shoelaces. If you lose the tips, the ends start fraying.

Telomerase is an enzyme. In cells, it restores the length of the telomeres when they get worn. As the ends of the chromosomes wear down, the telomerase comes in and builds them back up.

In humans, the thing is that as we mature, our telomeres slowly wear down. So the question has always been: did that matter? Well, more and more, it seems like it matters."

Use Social Security to Seal the Border - New York Times: "Although the failed Senate bill included provisions for worksite enforcement, Congress actually doesn’t need to pass new legislation to achieve it. The Social Security Administration has for seven decades maintained a comprehensive employment database that can keep track of every single employee, legal or not, in the United States. The Social Security database, combined with laws already on the books, provides a way to catch unauthorized workers almost as soon as they are hired."

Beware of DietWhat if counting calories makes you fatter in the long run?
By Sydney Spiesel

Diets have a high failure rate
Do diets work? The great majority of doctors think so. Experience tells us to expect an enormous failure rate, yet most of us continue to hold out hope that the diets we prescribe will result in lost weight or other health benefits. Why do we keep believing? First of all, because dieting really ought to work—here's the standard explanation. Calories are energy. The body stores excess energy (beyond what we need for motion and the chemical processes of life) in fat. If we cut down our caloric intake (or increase our energy output) below the amount of energy the body uses, our weight will fall."

Reminder.... It's Ch6 privacy code 16 now

CH 16.6 is our Neighborhood Watch Channel now. Can't figure it out? Sign up for help at the club house. We will start working on the list after the Forth.

Or grab one of the CERT team when they are walking by and they can help you.

If you listen on CH 6 because you don't have privacy codes as a feature you will hear everything but you cannot talk back to 16.6..... Just listen. I try to monitor both Channels for now but am not always available. So if you only have CH 6 call your block captain if you want to put something out over the network.

Yes it is doing very good. We have no cross talk from outsiders as far as I have heard.. So now when you hear something it is people here in the park and that is where we have been striving to get to. Folks get changed now it is the best security feature we have ever had in the park.
This is definitely worth the time to watch!!

Andy Simmons: One Dad's GPS Saga: Global Positioning System: "Global Positioning System
Men, goes the old chestnut, will drive to Minsk before stopping to ask for directions to the corner store. Not me -- I'll burn rocks in the form of SOS on the hood of my car rather than get lost. And lost in a car is where you'll usually find me. See, I have this problem: If I ask someone for directions and they're longer than 'It's over there,' I zone out. Case in point, on a family trip last year, I stopped and asked a gentleman for directions. As we drove away, I turned to my wife, Jennifer. 'Did you notice his teeth?'"

YOUR AGE BY EATING OUT

Don't tell me your age; you probably would tell a falsehood anyway-but your waiter may know!

YOUR AGE BY DINER & RESTAURANT MATH

This is pretty neat
DON'T CHEAT BY SCROLLING DOWN FIRST!
It takes less than a minute. Work this out as you read ...
Be sure you don't read the bottom until you've worked it out!
This is not one of those waste of time things, it's fun.

1. First of all, pick the number of times a week that you would like to go out to eat.
(more than once but less than 10)

2. Multiply this number by 2 (just to be bold)

3. Add 5

4. Multiply it by 50

5. If you have already had your birthday this year add 1757...
If you haven't, add 1756.

6. Now subtract the four digit year that you were born.

You should have a three digit number.

The first digit of this was your original number. (I.e., How many times you want to go out to restaurants in a week.)

The next two numbers are

YOUR AGE ! ------ (Oh YES, it is!!!)

THIS IS THE ONLY YEAR (2007) IT WILL EVER WORK, SO SPREAD IT AROUND WHILE IT LASTS

OK Let's do it.... the LVH Neighborhood Watch Radio Network is now CH 6 Privacy Code 16. This is written Ch6.16

Those of you that have the older radios with only CH 6 don't worry here is what we have worked out for you until you can update your radios.

If you only have CH 6 you will hear everything just as you have been BUT you will not be able to talk to anybody on the Neighborhood Watch Network. In an Emergency CERT will monitor CH6 and Ch6.16 and you will be able to talk then on CH6.

Why are we doing this? If you listen a lot you will notice we receive a lot of talk from people passing by LVH especially now in the summer. It goes on and on from children talking to grandma to people backing up RV's and the, "where are you now" calls and the occasional profanity idiot.

This will have a dampening effect on all of that. Under most conditions LVH residents will be the only ones listening and talking on the new channel. It will be a lot less aggravating to those who try to maintain a long term watch on the channel. It is not that easy to find volunteers to keep watch on the radio and for us to be successful we need those volunteers listening. So we do this for them and to cut down on confusion from outsiders. We've done this slowly so that you can acclimate on how to use your radio.

If you have problems making the switch any CERT member can help. Also, There will be an, "I need HELP list", on the bulletin board at the clubhouse. You can call me and I will come if possible or get someone else to come.
