A Snapshot of Coastal History
The Oregon State Archives has put together a nice web site entitled "1940 Oregon Coast Tour". We've linked to the chapters of their site below to give you a glimpse into a little history of the Oregon Coast. This section of U.S. 101 even more closely hugs the sea than does the section to the north. Villages are fewer because the Coast Range here presses closer to the sea.
At the southern edge of NEWPORT, 0 m., the highway passes through a landscaped park, then crosses the YAQUINA BAY BRIDGE, 1 m., a graceful cantilever structure, completed in 1936. The bridge deck, rising to 138 feet above the channel water, is high enough to permit the passage of ocean-going craft. Yaquina Bay, cupped by green hills is L., and the bar and jetties, long fingers extending seaward from the promontories, are R. The north shore rises sheer 150 feet, but the south shore is low, with partly wooded dunes.
In the 1880s a townsite was platted at SEAL ROCKS, 10.5 m. A large hotel was built, but development lagged. Today the village consists of a store, a post office, and several cabin camps. Sea lions still bask on the rocks offshore.

An analysis of residential burglaries in 2006 shows that Salem's Neighborhood Watch program is effective in deterring break-ins, police said.
Last year, 3 percent of residential burglaries -- 23 of 701 incidents -- occurred in homes participating in Neighborhood Watch, said ngela Mara Hedrick, a program coordinator with the Salem police Crime Prevention Unit.
Julia Allison, a volunteer Neighborhood Watch coordinator for the Faye Wright area, said that when burglars know homeowners are organized and watching for each other, they steer clear."

FINALLY, WE HEAR FROM BAHGDAD!!! THEY GOT THE 2ND SHIPMENT OF FISHING GEAR AND OTHER FUN STUFF. HERE'S THE LETTER I GOT THIS MORNING.
Mr. Schuler,
Hello I hope all is well. My name is Spc Jennifer Roux from the 1st CAV PAO. SFC Lewis is on leave so I was here when all the gear came in. Once again your station and your listeners came threw for us. I cannot even begin to tell you how happy you all made our soldiers. Its not every day that we get to see smiles on soldier’s faces. You all brought a little bit of home to a place so far away. The gear went to all diff units including ones that are from the 1st Inf Div out of Germany and the 2nd Inf Div out of Ft Lewis, WA as well as soldiers from the CAV. Lately we have been taking a lot of casualties and what you have done is give our guys an escape even if it’s only for a few mins. We recently open Warrior Park. It’s a place where all soldiers can come and relax fish, play volleyball, or have a picnic. Some of the things you sent went to the park. The command that set up the park was amazed at the stuff, up until me bringing in the stuff you sent they really didn’t have much to stock the gear closet. It is nice to feel people back home still think of us, I wish you could see how you turn harden soldiers in to little boys all excited about looking through stuff and the smile it brings when they find that one particular thing. Here is a cute story: when everything came in I didn’t have anyway to go pick it up. (Our vehicle was tide up on missions) I was on the phone with a guy talking to him about doing an interview and he asked if we had ever gotten the second shipment of fishing stuff, I laughed and said yep but it is currently in the mailroom until our vehicle was free. He told me to hang tight and he would be right over. He brought not only a truck but three other soldiers to help load and unload the boxes. It was like Christmas morning to them the cute thing was that they made sure they only took the bare minim. They wanted to make sure there was enough to go around. There was once a time when you would see one or 2 soldiers ever other day fishing on Z Lake now at any given time of the day there are half a dozen or so if not more.
Thanks again from all of us,
Spc Roux

Charles passed away Sunday morning at the hospital. As his family draws together from all over the world and country ... Think good thoughts for him and his wife Ruth during this time of transition.
The possibility of a memorial service at the clubhouse was mentioned to us by a friend of the family.
More details later.

Well, we were out of shape and in shape and all shades of color in between. It was fun. Talking with folks while we walked made it very enjoyable and as we passed the time yaking we all did more than we thought we could. We watched out for one another and when someone looked like they had enough we called on the radio and put them in the bus and took them home.
A good system.. Certainly better than finding yourself stranded and out of oomph. Also, we watched out for one another and did not let anyone over do.
I have walked many trails around town and have a couple of favorites that would be just right. One is the Hatfield Museum trail which is flat and about a mile. There are benches along the way to rest and watch the birds in the salt marshes. There are a couple of pick up points for those that tire and it would be a great outing. As a bonus the trail includes a full skeleton of a gray whale. Cameras are a must. Sorry, dogs are not allowed. We would have the van to pick you up when you get tired and return you to your car.. Just use your FRS radio.

Back-to-back disasters show cell gaps - USATODAY.com: "Both exposed the vulnerabilities of the cellular phone system — and particularly the dependence by emergency responders on cellphones during a natural disaster, officials said. In the critical first days following both disasters, communications were hampered by a lack of landline phones, coupled with spotty or non-existent cellular service.

North Oregon Coast Beach Reveals Ancient Ghost Forest Again
North Oregon Coast Beach Reveals Ancient Ghost Forest Again: "(Arch Cape, Oregon) – The mysterious chunks of wood have shown up periodically over the last few decades, sticking out of the sand like doomed creatures trying to make their last, desperate escape from a dreadful fate beneath the rest of the world. They make momentary impressions on passersby, who have no clue to the real meaning of these muted witnesses to an age practically before Mankind. They are unintentional memorials to the grandiose forest that once stood here, now reduced to twisted, tortured shapes that scream silently from another epoch."

The Bulletin | | Even moose are moving to Oregon: "'We came around the corner and there was a cow and a calf in the water,' recalled Karen Smith. 'To see them in Oregon, it doesn't really register ... It's like, are we still in Oregon? Does this river go to Washington or Idaho?'
They were, in fact, still in Oregon. After several decades of scattered reports of individual moose, wildlife biologists are now seeing a permanent population of the large ungulates in the northeast mountains of Oregon."

Authorities on the Oregon Coast were trying to figure out the best way to deal with a 40-foot Gray Whale that washed up on the beach near Newport over the weekend.
Wendy Schouviller
The 40-foot California Gray Whale washed up near Seal Rock sometime Saturday night or Sunday morning.
David Woody, a Beach Ranger for the Oregon State Parks Department, said the adult California Gray Whale washed up on shore near Seal Rock sometime late Saturday night or early Sunday morning.
Woody said it appeared the animal had been dead for at least a few days. He said the Coast Guard actually spotted it about five miles offshore Saturday afternoon.
Woody reports that the whale had washed ashore started coming in about 7:00 a.m. Sunday."
