'Major Discovery' Primed To Unleash Solar Revolution: Scientists Mimic Essence Of Plants' Energy Storage System
Want to bet this doesn't make it because industry kills it?
'Major Discovery' Primed To Unleash Solar Revolution: Scientists Mimic Essence Of Plants' Energy Storage System: "Until now, solar power has been a daytime-only energy source, because storing extra solar energy for later use is prohibitively expensive and grossly inefficient. With today's announcement, MIT researchers have hit upon a simple, inexpensive, highly efficient process for storing solar energy.
Requiring nothing but abundant, non-toxic natural materials, this discovery could unlock the most potent, carbon-free energy source of all: the sun. 'This is the nirvana of what we've been talking about for years,' said MIT's Daniel Nocera, the Henry Dreyfus Professor of Energy at MIT and senior author of a paper describing the work in the July 31 issue of Science. 'Solar power has always been a limited, far-off solution. Now we can seriously think about solar power as unlimited and soon.'"

'iShoe' uses NASA tech to help prevent elderly falls - USATODAY.com: "The National Osteoporosis Foundation estimates 300,000 people annually suffer hip fractures, which are often caused by falls. An average of 24% of hip fracture patients age 50 and over die within a year of the fracture.
Many fall victims who don't die within a year end up being disabled the rest of their lives.
'It's a huge issue,' said Elinor Ginzler of the AARP. 'It significantly impairs your ability to stay independent, which is what people want.'"

Air service to Portland inches closer: "The Cape Air service from the coast to Portland would be less frequent in the dead of winter, with two trips per day in January through March, and more frequent in the summer, with five flights a day June through September.
The company would have three planes covering the two routes and would charge $80 for a one-way ticket from Newport to Portland, and $70 from Astoria to Portland."

Derfler starts each project by leafing through a well-worn true-to-life illustrated volume of 'Trout and Salmon of the World' looking for a photo of a fish he wants to replicate."

BBC NEWS | Science/Nature | Audio Slideshow: To the Moon and beyond: "Nasa is celebrating 50 years of space exploration - which has taken the American space agency up into the Earth's orbit, on to the Moon, and deep into our Solar System.
That journey has produced many iconic images - from the Apollo moon landings, to the space shuttle missions, and the colourful pictures beamed back from the Hubble Space Telescope.
Here, space writer and historian Piers Bizony recalls some of Nasa's defining moments:"

Sad to see the destruction of the computer lab
I first noticed the computer that had self destructed and thought maybe it was an isolated incident but over a short time several of our computers have crashed (4 that I know of) They sit there unable to boot up because of something somebody did to them,, They went to the bone yard one at a time and I wonder which will be next...
Whoever has done the deed felt they could download programs that they saw fit.. among them the social network, "Face Book" . That leads me to believe it was a youngster... since most of you do not know what face book is. I have seen preteens, teens playing on the computers and have no argument with that but shouldn't we at least caution them to have the same respect for the clubhouse computers that we have for our own? After all if grandson or daughter were plunking on your home computer you would not just let them run amok would you?... Of course not.
Here is what I can try... I will try to reload the operating systems on the 4 computers... That may cause us to lose stuff that we had.. I just hope they are restored to working order. I will do this operation this Friday.
If it works, we could use a volunteer to keep up with the lab problems and equipment. Someone please come forward or a pair of you... would be nice.

The Japanese art of fish printing or “Gyotaku” (pronounced ghee-oh-tah-ku) utilizes the actual fish in the process to obtain an image of that fish. The literal translation of the Japanese term, “Gyotaku” is “fish rubbing”. The origin of this art form is credited to the late 18th century."

Sunday LVH Emergency NET
To our community,
We had our second emergency net tonight. We picked up a few and lost a few. Over time the results should improve. To those of you who have participated please try to remember this will be a weekly event to get everyone acclimated to using the radio and to checking their equipment. Sure we can put stuff here and on the newsletter but it will finally come down to you.. neighbor to neighbor passing the word along. Showing others that you are willing to participate and asking them to also.
When we have high winds and power outtages this winter we all will be connected on the net we are building now... If you are single this is a terrific deal for you.. Be connected to your neighbors and be able to get or give help because you are connected..
Next Sunday at 7:00pm sharp....join us on the net CH6.16 or CH6. If you don't know how... ask any CERT member to help you.
For those interested in seeing the tallied results of the emergency nets just click the title of this article....

New Health Drink? Chemist Goes Nano With CoQ10
New Health Drink? Chemist Goes Nano With CoQ10: "Never heard of CoQ10? Lipshutz says you're not alone. 'If you don't know anything about it,' Lipshutz said during a recent interview, 'that's not surprising to me. Much of the public hasn't heard of it.' But he's on a mission to correct what he views as a major oversight. 'In a sense, I'm just a messenger. People need to not only know about CoQ10, they need to take it.'"
Newport News-Times: Newport hears more testimony about G-P pipeline
Newport News-Times: Newport hears more testimony about G-P pipeline: "The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality issues the permit allowing G-P to discharge its effluent into the ocean. Newport previously granted a franchise agreement to G-P to allow the pipelines to pass through the city, but this agreement lapsed, and for more than a year, city staff and G-P have been discussing a new agreement. The city council has been presented with a draft agreement, crafted by City Attorney Gary Firestone. As originally proposed, the agreement states that in exchange for the use of city rights of way, G-P would pay the city $10,000 per year (with annual increases), plus $500 per day for every day G-P exceeds DEQ permit standards. The agreement would be for 10 years, with automatic renewals in 10-year increments unless G-P breaches the agreement. G-P would have to maintain liability insurance covering any injury and/or property damage attributed to the pipeline and indemnify the city. Also, G-P would be required to comply with applicable city ordinances, coordinate any construction with the city, get city approval before abandoning lines, and move lines upon request by the city."

A Beach Of Cellophane, Other Oddities, On Central Oregon Coast: "(Newport, Oregon) - It's more proof of how much weirder real science is than science fiction, although some of these creatures found recently seem straight out of a sci fi book.
The beaches of Newport saw some interesting action last week, according to resident and naturalist Terry Morse. Besides the discovery of a seal carcass, the Nye Beach area was briefly covered in a densely packed layer of worm tubes, and some jellyfish made an onshore appearance as well."
