A MAGICIAN AND AN ANNOYING PARROT…

A magician was working on a cruise ship. Since the audience was always different, he repeated the same tricks. The captain's parrot saw the show every week. The bird soon learned how the tricks worked. In the middle of the show, it would shout out the secrets to the magician's tricks.

One day, the ship ran into bad weather and sank. The magician and the bird ended up together on a piece of wood in the middle of the ocean. After three days, the parrot said, "I give up. Where did you hide the boat?"

It made me laugh! See you on the show!

The theme picture "No place like home"

Google Earth has been around for quite awhile but it did not show the rural areas such as Newport very well. This new picture was copied from GOOGLE EARTH BETA... the latest generation of this free program. As you can see we now can see very fine detail. It is possible to get right down to the top of about 3 houses.

TRY it you will like it..

On the Roll out of t

On the Roll out of the Community Emergency Plan and the CERT Drill today..

Editorial opinion by Ron Thomas

How do you gauge success when you roll out a program such as this? I think it will be demonstrated over time. Whether the people in the community take it seriously or not will be the final proof.

The leaders in the community are the Neighborhood Watch Block Captains and the CERT team working hand in hand. What we have learned from today’s drill is that the loss of life in a real emergency is proportional to how fast the injured can be reached. It took an hour and twenty minutes to canvass the entire park. What that means is that if you were injured it may have taken that long for us to find you.
We were only able to move that fast because of the volunteers that came to the clubhouse to help. With only the CERT team we estimate it would have taken 4 to 6 hours to canvass the park. You can see that is a dangerous time span. Even if the CERT team had not been in charge the time would have been the same because a trained firefighter or policeman would have to rely heavily on the knowledge of the CERT team.. They simply would not know the community as intimately as the folks that live here.

This time of an hour and twenty minutes may be far to long for a person that is bleeding badly or another that needs oxygen. We need to cut it down substantially. The how is not a mystery. We have the tools and the people. What we need is a recommitment to the Neighborhood Watch Program. That program is the key to faster response times.

Last time we looked at the Block Captain roster there were about 18 Block Captains throughout the Neighborhood. Each of those had several co-captains. Each Block Captain group individual had only 4 or 5 homes to account for and pretty much new on a daily basis who was home and who was not... Who was ill and not.... Who had  special needs and so forth. If we had that information today that hour and twenty minutes would have been 15 minutes! Simple as that. The CERT team would have been going on rescue calls because their partners in Neighborhood Watch would have that vital information to them very fast. Response would have started as soon as Neighborhood Watch called in the first injury even before all the data was in.

So here is what has to happen.. Those don’t want to participate in Neighborhood Watch any longer should tell the new co-coordinator, Marlene Crites so we can get on with finding a replacement. Marlene is wearing three hats now... First, she is a dedicated Block Captain, Second , she is the Neighborhood Watch Block Captain Coordinator and lastly, she is a fully trained CERT team member.  Marlene and the CERT team are going to redraw the maps so that the search areas correspond to the Neighborhood Watch Areas. This will have both groups working on the same page. We expect that Marlene will be asking for Block Captains to meet on a regular basis and help deign a plan and help each other find ways to serve the community.

As time goes forward I will address more issues that have come up as the result of our meetings and propose new ideas and solutions. You are invited to comment with your ideas and solutions... I will shamelessly steal them and incorporate them into our new Emergency plan as it grows from its infancy.

Newport Longview Hills CERT team and volunteers. Take on a communications drill

July 14th

The CERT team tried out their communications techniques and using volunteers explored ways to implement rapid response triage at Longview Hills.

Part of the drill was make sure the community received the North Lincoln County fire District SET manual for disaster survival. If you did not receive this highly formative manual please let a CERT team member know and we will get you on the waiting list.

CERT team members and community volunteers went a long way today toward implementing this communities disaster plan. Future projects include incorporating the Neighborhood Watch Block captians into the Disaster Plan.

Happy reading.. If you find a noteworthy article pass it on by email to one of the staff and they may publish it for you.

Updating Donna Davi...

Today finds Donna back in the local hospital where she is resting well, feeling perky and a lot better than last night when she was taken to the hospital by ambulance.

Dr.'s have scheduled her for an MRI today. Think good thoughts for Donna as we wait for her recovery.

BBC NEWS | Science/Nature | Silk 'could help repair nerves': "Silk may be able to help repair damaged nerves, according to scientists.

The UK researchers have shown how nerve cells can grow along bundles of a special fibre, which has properties similar to spider silk.

They hope the silk will encourage cell re-growth across severed nerves, possibly even in damaged spinal cords."

New Poll

What to do about the news feature?

On all the websites we keep up, we keep a statistics counter and are able to monitor the number of hits (visits) per day, week, month and year. You could say you vote for something by the number of times you visit it.

Just like you vote for a product at the store by the number of times and frequency of how often you buy it.

The graph of the news site is averaging about 6 visits a day. That makes me think that a link to Oregon Live (the Orogonian newspaper), the Statesman Journal and our local News Mirror would better serve our community.

The Poll will guide me in what to do about this question. If you have a moment please vote.

I Made a BOO BOO!!

Folks, I am sorry I made an error on the current poll so I've rectified it. It did ask if you planned to come on FRIDAY but the meeting is on WEDNESDAY.. That would be a big ooops. Also, we are only interested in how many people plan to attend so we know how many chairs to put out. Therefore, there is only one answer... Yes.

If you voted to come already I wonder if you would mind doing it again? Thanks! RT
Restuarant Editor wanted

We are thinking of having a web page where folks go to see where the best deals for meals are in our area. It could uncover where the Senior discounts are. Where the best dining is. What is thought of the service and ambiance.

In short we need a reviewer. If they choose they could also tell the restaurant owner what they are doing and the potential audience that will be reached. Who knows maybe that will inspire a discount?

Many of our resdents dine out a large portion of the week. We think that gives us clout especially in the winter when the tourists disappear from our area.

The page would store all the reviews and locations and would be available for your quick reference. If a restaurant is really poor for some reason it simply will not be listed. That will be our way of not running down an establishment and giving it a chance to improve. However, those listed should improve everyone's dining out experience.

To do this the person(s) will not have to do anything beyond write their review in an email to a special address. The review will instantly be published automatically on the new website...Simple as that.
