Dodds

A letter to Lorraine Spenser from Jim Dodds ..

Well howdy,
Just got the internet hooked up, "Sugar" the cat went missing after
I left with the truck. Dad had offered some stuff to Midge and she was
suppose to use the patio door but she opened the garage door and Sugar
excaped. So she must have found her way back in, dad says he looked all
over for her to no avail. We are so happy she was found and is in good
hands. We were all worried for her. She is a really shy kitty, she was
very abused before mom and dad resuded her.

The trip when smooth for both of us. I made it in here before dad but I
used the truck as a motel at rest stops, lol. Just getting all settled
in.

COMPUTER NEWS

Whoever assembled bookcase in the computer lab.. Thank you very much. I was going to get around to it eventually but have been going down other paths recently. And to he that donated the bookcase (Charles Burke) Thanks again.

You are invited to bring your MORE RECENT books that you don't use to share with the community. Please nothing that deals with less than Windows 2000. Rule of thumb if it is more than 3 years old.. It is outdated and not of much use.

Ben Davi recently contributed a number of games that he says won't work on Windows XP. So if you have an operating system that is older than XP you can check out a game.. Just return it.. honor system in force. To those of you with a more sophisticated background in computers here is a challenge for you. Check out these games and develop a way to make them work in XP.

We are still looking for mouse pads.. I know you have them.. how about donating some?

Wanted a serious gamer to teach me how to play games at the lab with multiple players.

Do you have an interest in:

Building a blog?
Learning Code?
Creating Posters?

If so let me know and I will start setting up some sessions. Be warned these topics will take some time to learn and class size will have to be kept small.

Our Flag Displayed at the Clubhouse

I noticed yesterday that the flag at the clubhouse is becoming a bit frayed on the ends. I also noticed the PVC pipe that has been in use to unfurl it when it wraps around its pole. I had the same problem with my personal flag and solved it this way (see the drawing)

When the wind tries to wrap the flag around the pole the washers keep it from doing that as they spin.

Just a suggestion...RT

HELP FOR RESIDENTS

• An Oregon law enacted in August enables displaced mobile home park residents with an annual household income of less than $60,000 to receive a tax credit of up to $10,000, State Rep. Jerry Krummel says.

• Pinellas County, Fla., on Tampa Bay, requires park owners to find affordable housing for displaced residents or to help provide them rental assistance for two years, says Anthony Jones, the county's director of community development.

• Commissioners in Clark County, Nev., home of Las Vegas, are considering a moratorium on the rezoning of mobile home parks for town homes, condominiums and other development, County Commissioner Myrna Williams says.

"CLEANING OF THE KITCHEN..............."

There were just a few residents working very hard at our Longview Hills Club House kitchen today to give it a good cleaning, which it very much needed. Just a friendly reminder to all residents who use the kitchen, is to make sure it is left the same way you found it or even cleaner. Thank you so much to those residents who took time from their lifes to make our kitchen cleaner today. Kudos to you all!!!! Posted by Picasa

"AARP DRIVER SAFETY PROGRAM"

Yesterday and today in a four hour class on each day, 5 Longview Hills Residents, including myself took the 55 and older Saftey Class put on by AARP. It's a great class and there were 27 in this class, we learned via a booklet, which you get to keep and also via video. We were able to receive our drivers improvement course completion certificate when the class was completed, which in turn one may get a discount on your auto insurance. We may have this course available one day here at the Club House, still in the planning stage. This course only cost $10 per person, pretty cheap to save on you insurance.

Web Pages

Web Page Building

There is a difference between web page building and making blogs. You almost have to be an initiate to understand the differences. But here it is in a nutshell ... A blog come with a series of premade templates and requires no knowledge to get started. Where building a web page requires a basic knowledge of html code at a minimum and a remote, host server somewhere on the planet. You also need to own your own domain (call this a place that is bought and paid for by you on the internet... A place where you have total dominion over what is put on the internet.)

4 years ago I knew zip about any of this and started a local blog about LVH. It was very plain. It had few readers... 5 or 6 once in awhile. It fascinated me how it was put together. Soon I was tearing it apart and analyzing it. Then my daughter gave me an old school manual on code... Today our blog has grown into 19 webpages. All have to be maintained behind the scenes with a variety of technical problems. It can keep you pretty busy. The number of visitors to the home page since inception is approaching 90,000.

We recruited shamlessly for writers, photographers, etc. to keep the thing interesting. Now, we have breathing room with the addition of Charles and Donna. They have given me space to learn how to build webpages in my own domain. Jim Dodds helped me along over some technical hurdles that I did not understand and now I have built 4 webpages from scratch.. 3 were practice but one is working on the CERT website HERE if you want to have a look.

Since I have more time I am going to employ what's been learned and so you will see new things on the website from time to time as we create new ideas.

What I would like to see from the Social Club Board...
This article will remain @ the top of the story string for a couple of days..

Do a write up of the things you do in your capacity as a board member. Most of you have been there 2 years. Tell folks how much time you invest.. Tell them you plan to stay on and help new members with their questions as they learn the new job. Tell them you will available for advice any time. Then appeal to members to come forward and be a leader for the coming year.

Email those write ups to me and I will post them here. You folks in the community then ask questions about what they have written.

Which are YOU?
This was too good of a life lesson not to pass on! A carrot, an egg and a cup of coffee... You will never look at a cup of coffee the same way again. A young woman went to her mother and told her about her life and how things were so hard for her. She did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up. She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed as one problem was solved, a new one arose. Her mother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Soon the pots came to boil. In the first she placed carrots, in the second she placed eggs, and in the last she placed ground coffee beans. She let them sit and boil, without saying a word. In about twenty minutes she turned off the burners. She fished the carrots out and placed them in a bowl. She pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. Then she ladled the coffee out and placed it in a bowl. Turning to her daughter, she asked, "Tell me, what do you see?" "Carrots, eggs, and coffee," she replied. Her mother brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that they were soft. The mother then asked the daughter to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard boiled egg. Finally, the mother asked the daughter to sip the coffee. The daughter smiled as she tasted its rich aroma. The daughter then asked, "What does it mean, mother?" Her mother explained that each of these objects had faced the same adversity ... boiling water. Each reacted differently. The carrot went in strong, hard, and unrelenting. However, after being subjected to the boiling water, it softened and became weak. The egg had been fragile. Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid interior, but after sitting through the boiling water, its inside became hardened. The ground coffee beans were unique, however. After they were in the boiling water, they had changed the water. "Which are you?" she asked her daughter. "When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?" Think of this: Which am I? Am I the carrot that seems strong, but with pain and adversity do I wilt and become soft and lose my strength? Am I the egg that starts with a malleable heart, but changes with the heat? Did I have a fluid spirit, but after a death, a breakup, a financial hardship or some other trial, have I become hardened and stiff? Does my shell look the same, but on the inside am I bitter and tough with a stiff spirit and hardened heart? Or am I like the coffee bean? The bean actually changes the hot water, the very circumstance that brings the pain. When the water gets hot, it releases the fragrance and flavor. If you are like the bean, when things are at their worst, you get better and change the situation around you. When the hour is the darkest and trials are their greatest, do you elevate yourself to another level? How do you handle adversity? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean? May you have enough happiness to make you sweet, enough trials to make you strong, enough sorrow to keep you human and enough hope to make you happy. The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most of everything that comes along their way. The brightest future will always be based on a forgotten past; you can't go forward in life until you let go of your past failures and heartaches. When you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling. Live your life so at the end, you're the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying.

Federal Regulators Propose Coastal Fishing Ban
About 700 Miles Affected....................

PORTLAND -- Federal regulators voted Thursday night to impose severe restrictions on commercial salmon fishing off parts of the Oregon and California coastline in an effort to protect dwindling salmon populations in the Klamath River.
The Pacific Fisher Management Council proposed closing about 700 miles of coastline for most June and July -- the most productive months of the season. The closures would be the broadest ever on the West Coast salmon fishery.
The council's decision must still be approved by the National Marine Fisheries Service, which generally follows the recommendations.
Fishermen were relieved that the council voted to allow some fishing this season.
