HONOLULU (AP) ? David Toms set a course record with a 9-under 61 and it still wasn't enough to take the lead Saturday in the Sony Open, which turned into a two-man race between Toms and the equally hot Chad Campbell.
Toms looked as dominant as he was a year ago winning the Accenture Match Play Championship, even if it felt as if it was all he could do to keep up with Campbell.
Toms finally caught him with a two-putt birdie on the 18th, setting the tournament record at Waialae Country Club since it changed to a par 70 in 1999. Davis Love III still has the course record of 12-under 60 in 1994."

The Seahawks post their first playoff win in 21 years . . . and do it without Shaun Alexander

SEATTLE -- This game was far from pretty for the Seattle Seahawks, but they'll take the win all the way to the NFC championship game.
After losing running back Shaun Alexander to a concussion with 4:54 left in the first quarter, the Seahawks held together to defeat Washington 20-10 in a divisional playoff game Saturday afternoon.
The Seahawks overcame all kinds of problems to advance to their first championship game and will face either Chicago or Carolina next Sunday at Qwest Field. The Seahawks had five fumbles and lost three. Without Alexander, the offense struggled to move the ball for much of the first half. "

Dogs can detect if someone has cancer just by sniffing the person's breath, a new study shows.
Ordinary household dogs with only a few weeks of basic 'puppy training' learned to accurately distinguish between breath samples of lung- and breast-cancer patients and healthy subjects.

'Our study provides compelling evidence that cancers hidden beneath the skin can be detected simply by [dogs] examining the odors of a person's breath,' said Michael McCulloch, who led the research.
Early detection of cancers greatly improves a patient's survival chances, and researchers hope that man's best friend, the dog, can become an important tool in early screening.
The new study, slated to appear in the March issue of the journal Integrative Cancer Therapies, was conducted by the Pine Street Foundation, a cancer research organization in San Anselmo, California."

Believe it or not, that was the Trail Blazers making 10 of 15 three-pointers. Converting 19 of 22 free throws. Turning the ball over just seven times. And ultimately, pulling away from a tight game in the final minute to secure a 113-108 victory over the shorthanded Orlando Magic in front of 12,301 at the Rose Garden.
Behind another near-flawless and steely shooting display from Juan Dixon and the surprise long-range shooting of Steve Blake and Sebastian Telfair, not to mention some huge blocks from Theo Ratliff, the Blazers won their second in a row and defied their season-long weaknesses.

After threats of ejection, Batinovich calmed down and watched Portland let a close game slip away for a 12-7 loss against the Arizona Sting on Friday night.
Before their first game, the LumberJax got a taste of what the future might hold, as the Sting raised their NLL West Division championship banner from last season to a standing ovation from the 6,125 in attendance.

The core of hunters (and anglers, to a lesser degree) carrying support of wildlife on their backs are declining in one of the West's greatest traditional hunting states.
More than 200,000 Oregonians still hunt, and nearly 1 million angling licenses and tags are sold annually.
But the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is at a key crossroads to ensure the sport's future.

As a baby boomer, I'm hardly unusual in having a large box of photographs in my closet. Also likely common is my photos' diversity: fading Polaroid baby pictures, travel shots, family gathering commemorations, images of people and places I can't identify, some professional photography, and quite a lot of etc. In addition, I have a few photo albums — created when my parents thought I was cute and when I worked to record and remember vacations.
But the years have generated a lot of unorganized pictures, and I'm falling further behind in making sense of them. Worse, the photographs suffer from improper storage: being folded, fading, cracking, sticking together. Even the ones supposedly preserved in albums are being damaged by invisible hazards."

The Kiss...
He had just saved her from a fire in her house, rescuing her by carrying her out of the house into her front yard, while he continued to fight the fire.
She is pregnant.
When he finally got done putting the fire out, he sat down to catch his breath and rest.
A photographer from the Charlotte, North Carolina newspaper, "The Observer," noticed her in the distance looking at the fireman.
He saw her walking straight toward the fireman and wondered what she was going to do.
As he raised his camera, she came up to the tired man who had saved her life and the lives of her babies and kissed him just as the photographer snapped this photograph.

Suppose we find out that one home owner needs oxygen another special medications and another a wheel chair? Or any other special need we can think of?
Here is an idea. We use the light posts to convey that information at a glance. We could use colored electrical tape. For instance a green stripe on the post would mean, “Needs Oxygen”. A red might indicate special medicine. Another might indicate pets... Stripes could be used or vinyl dots. It could be visible or unobtrusive. A number of dots might indicate how many occupants are normally there. The light post can be used to carry a whole lot of data at a glance eliminating the need to carry and shuffle lists during rescue operations.
The light post also has the distinction of being out of the danger of building structural damage. Of course each home owner would knowingly allow posting of such data but the homes that take this precaution would certainly be the first to be surveiled you would think..
This idea posted on the LVH CERT site also.

The former governor offers a revolutionary health-care plan

that will start a much-needed national debate in Oregon
R aise your hand, Oregon. The nation is looking for any place, anyone, to lead the way to a more just, more efficient and more affordable system of health care.
Oregon could be that place. Former emergency room physician and ex-Gov. John Kitzhaber could be the one. Kitzhaber is preparing to present Oregonians with a plan to make revolutionary changes in health care. The core of his plan is to take the public money now unevenly and inequitably allocated to health care -- including Medicare and Medicaid -- and use it to provide a basic package of health care to each and every Oregonian."

Medicare forum - Sen. Patty Murray urges seniors and advocates to push for changes
Friday, January 13, 2006

VANCOUVER -- After listening to horror stories Thursday about the new Medicare Plan D for drugs, U.S. Sen. Patty Murray declared the plan a nightmare but warned not to expect improvements from the president or Congress.
'They have said no changes unless they hear from the people,' said the Washington Democrat. 'We have to get the word out.'
The plan, approved in 2003, is intended to help senior citizens and people with disabilities buy prescription drugs through Medicare. It began Jan. 1 and is administered through private insurance companies, with a May 15 deadline for signing up. Proponents and drug companies say it will lower overall prescription costs."

In 2006 a group of mice-astronauts will orbit Earth inside a spinning spacecraft. Their mission: to learn what its like to live on Mars.
by Karen Miller
Humans need gravity. Without it, as astronauts have vividly demonstrated, our bodies change strangely. Muscles lose mass, and bones lose density. Even the ability to balance deteriorates.
From long experience on the space shuttle and various space stations, we have some knowledge of how mammals, especially people, respond to 0-g. We have even more experience with 1-g on Earth. But we still don't know what happens in between."

It was the last stop before millionaire adventurer Steve Fossett takes to the air again to attempt another world record.
Fossett plans to depart later this month or in February on what he hopes will be the longest non-stop ride in an aircraft, eclipsing a record set in 1986 by Dick Rutan and Jeanne Yeager.
Fossett already topped Rutan and Yeager's around-the-world tour by making the trip last year flying solo."

SEATTLE (AP) ? The Seattle Mariners agreed Thursday to a $1,875,000, two-year contract with reliever Julio Mateo that avoided salary arbitration.
The 28-year-old right-hander made $390,000 last season, his fourth with Seattle. He was 3-6 with two blown saves, a 3.06 ERA, 52 strikeouts and 17 walks in a career-high 55 games. That likely would have been his third consecutive season with 50 appearances, had he not spent six weeks of 2004 on the disabled list with elbow tendinitis.
He is 8-8 with a 3.56 ERA, two saves, five blown saves, 181 strikeouts and 58 walks in 162 career games."

I 'm not sure what it is about the topic of major league baseball that instantly divides Portland, but that is the prevailing dynamic.
Unfortunately, the dialogue crumbles into a baseball vs. schools harangue faster than Ichiro Suzuki can run to first base. That is what happened this week when Portland Mayor Tom Potter raised the specter of school funding after being asked about public financing for a big league ballpark.
I talked to Potter on Wednesday. I respect him for being cautious about committing tax dollars to a stadium. But he's in left field when he immediately invokes the school-funding issue. Oregon schools will face a fiscal crisis whether baseball comes here. Our state's flawed tax structure guarantees that. "

Our New Computer Lab
Our New Computer Lab Update...
We are moving ahead in the ultimate goal of establishing a first rate computer lab at the club house. A place for learning.. Seniors helping Seniors. Neighbor helping neighbor. Folks learning how to use the internet. Learning new ways to play exciting games. Learning and learning. A computer Club meeting place that we can really talk computers at. Teachers with the knowledge are coming forward and signing on.. Already we have Sid Adkins and Donna Davi... Me too.
We talked to Larry Henson yesterday and got our project all lined up the way that it will be supported by management. Here is the jist of what is going to happen. Where the old computers are now is where the lab will remain. The exercise equipment will be moved to another location. All the old computer equipment that is in that room now with the exception of the nice 17” monitor that Bill Holt donated and the current printer in use will be given away at a drawing. There are 3 functional computers there now. They have either Windows98 or 95 on them. The remaining equipment such as monitors and printers will also be raffled off. The computer now in use for the internet will remain until we have a new one programmed to take its place and then it will be raffled.
A call is going out now for a wood worker or two in the park to come and help build movable computer stands like the one that is in the computer lab now.
You have seen the list of programs and operating system that Jim Dodds is going to install on the (new to us) computers in a below article. He wanted to know which ones we wanted. I told him the latest operating system he has and WinWord and Excel. Also, a lot of games. If any of you have looked at the list and want something special ... Now is the time to comment below.. Jim reads this site and will see your request.
What we don’t want is end up with a mess in our lab. We want everything to have a place and be in it. Also, the lab should not be used as a dumping ground for old equipment so we are requesting you ask before bringing in any treasures.
Also, we will have one computer located in our library area where folks can use it if classes are going on.. Who knows? Maybe a volunteer will catalogue all of our books and it can be used for that purpose too.
Jim Dodds has also drawn a diagram of the way we are going to hook up the computers into a network. I believe it eventually will be a combination of Ethernet (cabling) and WiFi (wirelss). We need the supplies to do that right now and it’s going to cost about $300. Nope, I don’t know where the money is coming from... I’m hoping you will tell me.
When the system is up and ready we will need one Charter high speed internet connection. One connection will allow all the 10 computers to go on the internet at the same time. And they can each go their own way. If we add a wifi access point down the road. Any computer (such as a laptop with a wifi card) will also be able to access the internet even with all the other computers doing it at the same time. Usually a network can handle around 250 computers at once so there is virtually no limit as far as we are concerned. This one connection will be an ongoing expense to the Social Club and I will have a cost for that item soon.
