Handy Hint from the Kim Kommando web site

"MALWARE CAN HIDE IN SYSTEM RESTORE POINTS Margaret called from Columbus, OH. A few weeks ago, she got a virus on her computer. She got rid of it. Or so she thought. Now she is getting messages that the virus is still on her computer. She can't figure out what is going on. Well, Margaret, it sounds like the virus is in your system restore points. Windows takes snapshots of your system at various intervals. If something goes wrong, you can roll Windows back to one of these points. Unfortunately, those snapshots include viruses and other malware. So you need to erase the restore points. Click Start>>Control Panel. Double-click System. On the System Restore tab, check 'Turn off System Restore on all drives.' Click Apply>>OK. Reboot your computer. Then, open System Restore and reverse the change you just made. Run your anti-virus software again. The warnings should be gone."

"SPRING DINNER APRIL 29th, 6P.M."
Happy Hour from 5 to 6..........B.Y.O.B.

Free Dinner.... Half paid for by owners of the sod on the hill and our Social Club. Just bring a desert, appertizer, or a salad. If you have not sign up yet, then you need to call Donna Davi to get on the list before 9p.m. tonight. thank you.....
At noon tomorrow we will be setting up for the dinner at the Club House and can always use the help. Hope to see you at the dinner. A lot of good food!

So far...

So far there are 26 remote controls for the gate that have been voted for. Nearly 50% of those voting aren't interested. The minimum order is 50 units.

This helps with the insight into our communities thinking. Yes a sign up list at the clubhouse should capture more data.

ON THE SOAP BOX AGAI

ON THE SOAP BOX AGAIN....

Every once in awhile I haul out the rules for writing and commenting on this website, dust them off and put them up for everyone to see. Maybe we have to do that because a rule has been violated or because there is not a complete understanding of how it works or simply we have new readers.

The easiest way to remember what to do is to know that we promote the Golden Rule. “Do unto others as you would have them to do unto you”. If you have that down pat we will get along fine. All the other rules find their way back to that main rule.

Recently, we erased a comment that told another commenter to “shut up”.. That clearly falls outside the rules. This was also a comment that that person would not sign their name to. Which is an act of cowardice in our opinion. Always make sure you sign your name if you want your comment to remain on the page.

Sure, nasty comments will get in from time to time and they will remain there until I have the time to ferret them out and edit them. You could help by letting me know when you see one and I will take care of it.

By Marty Nemko
Anger destroys careers. It destroys relationships. You may think it lets off steam or shows how passionate you are, but by getting angry you almost invariably lose more than you gain. Your bosses, coworkers, romantic partners, and children may kowtow in the short run, but they'll increasingly avoid doing what you'd like them to–it's only natural for people to try to foil anyone who tries to intimidate them."

Working at retirement age is 'almost a tale of two cities,' says Shirley Robinson Pippins, president of Suffolk County (N.Y.) Community College. One group of workers simply can't afford to retire. The other group is looking to stay engaged in society, be creative, or simply have something to do. But no matter how you look at it, working at retirement age is here to stay, and that's exactly how many baby boomers want it."

A potentially lethal strain of staph infection was once a worry mainly in hospitals. But MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) is becoming increasingly common in gyms, day care centers, prisons, and other venues where people are in close contact and hygiene is often lacking."

100 YEARS AGO.......
The year is 1906. One hundred years ago. What a difference a century makes! Here are some of the U.S. statistics for the Year 1906:
The average life expectancy in the U.S. was 47 years.
Only 14 percent of the homes in the U.S. had a bathtub.
Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone.
A three-minute call from Denver to New York City cost eleven dollars.
There were only 8,000 cars in the U.S., and only 144 miles of paved roads.
The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.
Alabama, Mississippi, Iowa, and Tennessee were each more heavily populated than California. With a mere 1.4 million people, California was only the 21st most populous state in the Union.
The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower!?
The average wage in the U.S. was 22 cents per hour.
The average U.S. worker made between $200 and $400 per year.
A competent accountant could expect to earn $2,000 per year, a dentist $2,500 per year, a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year.
More than 95 percent of all births in the U.S. took place at home.
Ninety percent of all U.S. doctors had no college education.
Instead, they attended so-called medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press and by the government as "substandard."

Sugar cost four cents a pound. Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen. Coffee was fifteen cents a pound.
Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used borax or egg yolks for shampoo.??
Canada passed a law that prohibited poor people from entering into their country for any reason.
Five leading causes of death in the U.S.? were: 1. Pneumonia and influenza 2. Tuberculosis? 3. Diarrhea 4. Heart disease 5. Stroke
The American flag had 45 stars. Arizona, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Hawaii, and Alaska hadn't been admitted to the Union yet.

The population of Las Vegas, Nevada, was only 30 !!!
Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and ice tea hadn't been invented yet.
There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day.
Two out of every 10 U.S. adults couldn't read or write.
Only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school.
Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter at the local corner drugstores . Back then pharmacist said, "Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach and bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health."? (Shocking!)
Eighteen percent of households in the U.S. had at least one full-timeservant or domestic help.
There were about 230 reported murders in the entire U.S.
SO, to think I forwarded this from someone else without typing it myself, and sent it to you in a matter of seconds!
Try to imagine what it may be like in another 100 years.

Morel Mushrooms

Morel Mushrooms: "Morel Mushrooms:
Gourmet Treasure from the Earth
By Larry Lonik

Mushroom hunting can be a wonderful, healthy outdoor experience to share with family and friends. But the thrill of the hunt is only half the enjoyment. Its deliciously earthy, nutty, steak-like flavor makes the morel mushroom the No. 1 target of wild mushroom hunters across North America."

Automatic Gate Opene

Automatic Gate Openers will soon go on sale...

The vendor has told management that he needs to order the remote controllers for the new gate that is coming soon. Management says there is going to be a punch code controller at the gate just as there is now and they have no interest in purchasing the remotes for residents. The vendor says the minimum quantity that can be purchased is 50.  At $20 apiece that would be $1000 and at $30 apiece that would be $1500. If more are wanted the money will be more. The Social Club will most likely consider making the purchase. That will have to be debated and voted on either at a special meeting or the next regular meeting. Accordingly Ben Davi is going to speak to the vendor and get all the data we have to know.

Meanwhile, we have put up a new poll today to try and gauge the interest in this project. Be kind enough to vote won’t you?

Preliminary thoughts you need to consider are is this going to be a fully paid order before it leaves the park and goes to the vendor? The maintenance of the remote controls will be the responsibility of the owners. The warranty will be the responsibility of the owner. The Social Club will not be responsible for replacement and upkeep.

Many people have grumbled lately about the size of the Social Club treasury. I would like to point out to you that it is precisely because the treasury is being kept up that the Social Club can even consider buying in quantity for a good price. Were the treasury to become depleted due to ideas such as give aways and free dinners there would not be a way to purchase these remotes because the money would not be there.

As a group we can do more if we are financially sound and here is the proof.
"NEW ENTRY/EXIT GATE PLANNED"

Currently the plan is for demolition/construction to take place sometime around the week of May 8th throughout May 12th. The new gate will have the availability of being operated by both a numeric keypad and a clicker device (which may be purchased by residents via your social club as an option to open the gate) instead of having to enter in a numeric code. The Social Club Board is still in the planning stage in the cost per unit and as soon as we get the final cost per unit it will be announced. Management thanks us for our patience and apologize for any inconvenience the construction may cause. But we know the end will be a far better operating gate area.

Help

Help!

One of my passions is computers. Like maybe you did not know that.. Well for a long time I have been thinking about ways to make Seniors more involved with life than stuck away in their homes. This can be done by giving meaningful, interesting volunteer opportunities to our community. A chance to do something that improves the quality of life for everyone. Something that will be fun as well as interesting.

Say you have a disabling disease that keeps you homebound.. TV is all that you have to look forward to. We can teach you in your own home and at your own pace how to do many things on our website.

Frankly, I have 29 websites that I take care of for different folks and organizations now and it is a great source of entertainment and joy for me.

Recently, you have seen Charles Burke come on the scene as a writer for the community. He knew nothing about websites just 3 or 4 months ago. He now is a major contributor for the Senior Funnies, LVH Home site, Bulletin Board, and Fishing Club. He writes articles, snips them from newspapers around the world. Puts on pictures on all the sites. He does this even though he suffers severe back pain which lays him low regularly. His own comment is that working the websites lets him forget about the pain. There is a lesson there.

I am acquiring more websites for local government because money is tight they can use help in making websites.. That’s good.. They won’t have to levy taxes to get the job done.. You can help them by putting on the websites the things they want to go on them.. So simple and yet important.

We intend to acquire more work from volunteer organizations.. You will be able to help them.. You could help the community with our site now. Some things are in the talking stage and little more than a dream... Imagine a group of seniors surfing the net looking for criminals and tipping off the police... We can do this. What about chat rooms with sex offenders ..We could catch them... Underage drinking parties.. How many accidents can we stop. You see our plans are big but we can’t do it alone we need you.

otter rock

Spring is here.. Time for a walk in the woods.. I have a new camera.. Come along let's go for one together. This walk is rated easy for seniors. First drive on over to the INN at Otter Rock.. just a little bit north of here.

Drive on down the entry way and enjoy the budding azelias. Promise of beauty to come. I only have a little storage space on this camera and so am waiting to get a large storage card. No pictures of that.

Once you get to the front of the hotel follow the road around back to the Flying Dutchman Winery cafe... Park close to the Duck pond.

Notice the sign! Fido isn't welcome here, sorry.

Just head on up the street here. We are going to turn into the forest up there where that sign is.

This is the spot let's go have a look..

down path we go. Just like something out of Sunset magazine.

Around the corner is a path leading off into the woods. I can't resist. This is hard for seniors.. lots of nasty roots waiting to trip you up. Better not go here. At the end of the trail it comes to a 4ft. chain link gate to somone private backyard.

Eyes skyward to enjoy the canopy shading us.

Looks like a good place for a nap..umm..

v

The trail beckons..

Whoops passed by trail traffic. Must be going to slow.

Out of the shade into the light... Ran out of pictures on the camera too.. I guess you will have to come and try thr trail to see the rest.. RT
