Yesterday's bombings in downtown London are profoundly disturbing. In part, that is because a bombing in our mother country and closest ally, England, is almost like a bombing in our own country. In part, it's because one assault may have involved a suicide bomber, bringing this terrible jihadist weapon into the heart of a major Western capital. That would be deeply troubling because open societies depend on trust - on trusting that the person sitting next to you on the bus or subway is not wearing dynamite."

If snails or slugs are chomping your garden, offer them a beer. Attracted to yeast in the liquid, the mollusks will trail right into a dish of beer and drown, sparing your garden from their depredations. Other seemingly strange plant-care suggestions, such as composting nail clippings, also get the thumbs up at the Science of Gardening, a new exhibit from the Exploratorium in San Francisco, California. With the museum's usual flair, the site harvests tidbits on everything from the bacteria that maintain soil fertility to the origins of our modern plant varieties. Iceberg lettuce's firm, round head allows it to endure rough handling during harvest and transportation, for example. A clever section explores the relationship between plants and their pollinators with mock love letters between the parties--followed by a scientific explanation of what's happening. 'You appeared in the thousand facets of my eyes' reads a letter from a bumblebee to a lavender flower.

This is a proud but awful moment for The New York Times and its employees. One of our reporters, Judith Miller, has decided to accept a jail sentence rather than testify before a grand jury about one of her confidential sources. Ms. Miller has taken a path that will be lonely and painful for her and her family and friends. We wish she did not have to choose it, but we are certain she did the right thing."

Delores Waehlte hits jackpot ..sets record!!!

to rt as told to by Jacky Thomas

Delores broke a record at the clubhouse Bingo games last night and won five out of seven games. She is now the LVH Bingo Queen. Amazingly Delores was not injured by the other players who are known to be a shifty lot and do not look kindly to all the loot being won by one person.

Delores, I would lay low if I were you... until next month's Bingo anyhow...

Retired persons entertainment Working people frequently ask retired people what they do to make their days interesting.

I went to the store the other day. I was only in there for about 5 minutes. When I came out there was a cop writing out a parking ticket.

I went up to him and said, "Come on, buddy, how about giving a Senior a break?"

He ignored me and continued writing the ticket. I called him a Nazi.

He glared at me and started writing another ticket for having worn tires.

So I called him a dog #@$%^. He finished the second ticket and put it on the windshield with the first.

Then he started writing a third ticket. This went on for about 20 minutes. The more I abused him, the more tickets he wrote.

Personally, I didn't give a damn. My car was parked around the corner.

I try to have a little fun each day now that I'm retired. It's important at my age.

DOOR POSTERS AT THE CLUBHOUSE...
RT

Everybody... I need some help here. Some of you know about the new posters that advertise weekly and monthly events. Maybe you're hearing about it for the first time now. These posters for all reocurring events are in the plastic tray mounted on the bulletin board and are there for the convenience of everyone to hang on the door as their club event approaches. No one is assigned to keep up with this task. It is hoped that everyone will step in and lend a hand.

These calendar event posters were created because they happen on a regular basis throughout the month. Today someone placed the Women's coffee poster on the door for today... If you check the calendar posted on the bulletin board you will see that the coffee is on the last Tuesday of the month. So today was not the day to hang that poster up. Now no less than two people have called or spoke to us telling us that the sign was not on the right day. My question is simply why not take the sign down if you know it is up on the wrong day? One answer was that they waited for the person who put it up to return and take it down.. Does that make sense to you?

So we are asking everyone put up the posters when they need to go up but check the calendar to make sure you are right before you do.... On the positive side... they are getting put up and that's cool.

Computer maintenance can be routine

By Bill Husted
Cox News Service

I just took my car in for its 30,000-mile checkup. A lot has changed since I drove an MG-B. Nowadays, they hook the car up to a computer and do mysterious things.

In the old days you didn't have to know a lot. My main gift was the willingness to get my hands dirty. So I could change the plugs, points and oil. Now I have to leave the maintenance on my car to real experts.

For purposes of maintenance, computers are still in the MG-B days. Even if the words ``hard drive'' make you think of long hours behind the wheel of your car, you can do almost all the work needed for routine maintenance of your PC."

BANDWIDTH THEIF....

RT

The icons on the left of our webpage, the pictures that we put on to view are all put on the website by companies that rent us bandwidth. Bandwidth is memory that pictures use up. Normally, the webpage use about 5% of the bandwidth I have purchased so we have plenty of space and never run out... Until yesterday. Someone found one of our pictures to their liking and using the code that displays that picture on the website linked it to their own site and increased the traffic to see that picture so much that it ran us out of bandwidth. That resulted in our company shutting us off and a complete loss of all our pictures and icons.

So this morning I began removing all the recent pictures in an effort to stem the tide. If it doesn't abate the theft the site will probably lose some pixs for awhile until we can change things around a bit. So if you see printing where an Icon was you can click on it and it will act like a normal icon... until we can straighten this out.
Arghhhh!!!

Bill Furgason and I nearly spent the night on the clubhouse patio. Since Jim and Bonnie are away having lots of fun in a frigid climate somwhere, we were forced to find someone else with a barbecue machine for todays Picnic. Bill was kind enough to step forward and let us use his.

Bill and I transported the thing to the club house and arrived there when Jackie Memoli came for her mail. She exchanged pleasantries with us as we moved the BBQ to the patio outback. Then she went to her car. Meanwhile the @#^%$ patio door slammed shut with a gust of wind and of course it was locked from the inside.. We were stranded. As Jackie was getting into her car with her mail Bill and I were hollering her name with our noses pressed up against the windows to see if we had stopped her from leaving... We did thanks to my big mouth probably. She came back in with question marks all over her face untill she saw our predicament and walked down to let us out of prison. Smirking she promised not to tell anybody about the incident but we know she was just itching to tell someone so I'm beating her to the punch... Thanks Jackie.

PORTLAND, Ore.

When President Bush travels to the Group of 8 summit meeting this week, he'll stiff Tony Blair and other leaders who are appealing for firm action on global warming.

'Kyoto would have wrecked our economy,' Mr. Bush told a Danish interviewer recently, referring to the accord to curb carbon emissions. Maybe that was a plausible argument a few years ago, but now the city of Portland is proving it flat wrong.

Newly released data show that Portland, America's environmental laboratory, has achieved stunning reductions in carbon emissions. It has reduced emissions below the levels of 1990, the benchmark for the Kyoto accord, while booming economically."
