PSSSt! Hey Buddy want to see an Earthquake?

Scientists, reading the geological record of sand deposits in salt marshes up and down the NW coastal areas and reading history books of the time both in the U.S. and Japan were able to put this picture together of what occurred along our shores in January 1700. The historical records as well as the geology allowed them to develop the below animation that runs over a 24 hour period. At the top of the map watch the hours slide by and the continuous flow of new waves being generated.

When the waves begin hitting Japan they rebound and head back to us across the Pacific. The earthquake came from our off shore fault structure slipping. Further research by scientists of the salt marsh records show that this type of event happens every 300 to 500 years. Our coast is now into the 300th year since the last event.... Start thinking about preparedness now.

Are We Ready for Another Tsunami? - TIME

Are We Ready for Another Tsunami? - TIME: "Wednesday's massive earthquake near Indonesia was distressingly similar to the one that killed over 220,000 people in December of 2004. Both happened off the coast of Sumatra and put at least a dozen other countries at risk of tsunami. Yesterday's magnitude-8.4 quake was smaller than the 9.1 of 2004, but only slightly. Tall buildings swayed in Jakarta, and some high-rises were evacuated in Singapore. And less than 24 hours later, the quake was followed by a second and third temblor in the same area, which brought buildings down in the coastal Indonesian city of Padang and triggered more tsunami warnings around the region."

A new feature on the website..... LABELS!!!

What it might be you say? Here is how it will work from now on.... Some things may need to be recalled at a future date. To make that easier for you we now are using "Labels"

At the end of an article you may see the word "LABELS" followed by a label in blue. The blue label is a link to all the things written by a person or pertaining to a category. When you click it, it will search our website for every posting that has that label attached to it and bring our website up again but only with articles that have been tagged by that label.

Confused? Let's have an example..... look down the site until you find the email from Larry Henson. At the bottom of his email you will see a label link ... click it and up will come everything Larry Henson mails to the website from now on... Labels will be used more and more to help you find articles living in the past.
Pledges of $450 on the last Poll

Here is the deal. The CERT team needs $2000 to get one of these puppies at LVH. Thursday the team is submitting a grant application to the Confederated tribes of Siletz. Then we wait. If it comes in we will buy it from either Samaritan Hospital here in Newport or in Lincoln City. The unit is a Zoll and has batteries with a 5 year shelf life. The primary use will be for the CERT Team in a disaster. The secondary use will be for use at the clubhouse in case of heart problems at a club event. It most likely will be locked up in a glass enclosed case to keep curiosity seekers out. The glass will have to be broken or a CERT member will be able to unlock the box. The AED will be insured against theft.... That's the plan. The reality is we may have to find another way to get our unit...

More as time goes on... RT

I pledge the sum of $______ to a fund to buy an AED for the park Clubhouse. I do nothing now but when asked to come forward, I'll be there for you. Count on it.

Tsunami message from WCATWC

Tsunami message from WCATWC: "A strong earthquake has occurred, but a tsunami IS NOT expected along the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, or Alaska coast. NO tsunami warning or watch is in effect for these areas. Further seismic analysis indicates that this earthquake may be the kind of earthquake that ruptures more slowly and has an increased potential to generate tsunami waves that could be damaging near the epicenter. This center will continue to monitor nearby sea level gauges and will report any tsunami waves that are observed. A damaging tsunami IS NOT expected along the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska coasts although some of these areas may experience non-damaging sea level changes."

The important thing is to date everything properly so it appears on your life timeline in the right place."

The Associated Press: Quake Triggers Tsunami in Indonesia

The Associated Press: Quake Triggers Tsunami in Indonesia: "JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — A massive earthquake struck Indonesia on Wednesday, killing one person, injuring dozens and triggering a tsunami that hit one city on the island of Sumatra, authorities said. Tsunami warnings were issued for much of the Indian Ocean region. A wave of up to 9 feet was reported to have struck the city of Padang about 20 minutes after the quake, said Suhardjono, an official with Indonesia's meteorological agency, who goes by only one name. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center also reported that a small tsunami hit Padang. At least one person was killed and dozens injured in Bengkulu, the town closest to the epicenter, local government official Salamun Harius told El Shinta radio. Residents in Bengkulu, where at least one building was demolished, said the quake triggered panic and that people ran inland. 'Everyone is running out of their houses in every direction,' said Wati Said, who spoke by cell phone standing outside her house. 'We think our neighborhood is high enough. God willing, if the water comes, it will not touch us here.' 'Communication is cut, we can't call out,' she added. 'I don't know how you contacted us. Everyone is afraid.'"

From Carol Sadusky to RT

Subject: Yard debris

NEED FOR A COMMUNITY DUMPSTER
According to the most recent Thompson Sanitary Service billing information, there is a $4.00 charge per bag for bush & tree trimmings, lawn clippings, and yard debris.
As we noted in the past, some of the parks have commercial dumpsters where yard debris is dumped, then collected periodically by the sanitary service.
Another approach would be some sort of ravine dump, exclusively for biodegradeable material which would have easy access, yet hidden from view by the residents of the park.
What do you do with the debris when you clean your yard?
If LVH wants the park to have a tidy appearance, they should make it easy for the residents to get rid of it.
For years we have cut up and bagged our yard clean up, and paid the extra $1.00 per bag, but as we grow older, cutting and bagging is becoming more difficult. Then the extra charge per bag is something to consider.
Is there a solution to this problem? We would appreciate your comments about this matter. Thank you, Ron.
Sincerely, Carol & Milton Sadusky

Rt responded...

Carol,

There is a debris ravine. Go south on Evergreen to where it TEEs ... Turn left, go about 25 yards and look on the left. You will see the area. We are not allowed to dump on either side of the do not dump signs. But, we are allowed to dump in the middle of the signs. No plastic allowed yard clippings only.

It would be nice if we did have a community dumpster but it would probably never come from the park. Larry would point out that people would abuse it and with 265 residents.. he would probably be right.

We might discuss a once a month pick up by volunteers who take it to the dump... Volunteers that care about other's problems are in short supply at LVH but I will broach such a subject on the website.
