Our World Just shrun

Our World Just shrunk!!!!

I found a new (new to me) wonderful thing while surfing today and I want to share it with you. It’s called Google Translate. On certain websites that are in a non English language such as Spanish for instance... Google has put a link that changes the Spanish it is written in to English. You just click it and the writing just changes in the blink of an eye.

This person’s site was left by a surfer when they then went to the Newport CERT website. We can tell what site a visitor came from to view our website with our tracking and statistic tools. So I went to this site to see what they found interesting about our site.

This site I went to was in Spanish and on the left side of the page was a link that said try “Google Translator”, so I did. Wow! Everything just turned into English.

Want to see it happen yourself? Just click the below link and the first link on the left says Translate to English. Click that.. Kewell!

New Scientist Breaking News - 'Walk again' drugs to be tested on people: "Walk again' drugs to be tested on people

TWO antibodies that enabled the severed spinal nerves of rats to be regenerated are to be tested in humans.

The antibodies have helped rats with damaged spinal cords to walk again, by blocking the action of Nogo, a protein that stops nerve cells sprouting new connections. But there were concerns about whether blocking Nogo would lead to uncontrolled neuronal rewiring in the brain or spinal cord and it was also unclear how such a therapy could be given to humans."

Today's Quote: Where there is great love, there are always miracles.
-Willa Cather

1 - First Important Lesson - Cleaning Lady.
During my second month of college, our professor gave us a pop quiz. I was a conscientious student and had breezed through the questions till I read the last one:

"What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?"

Surely this was some kind of joke. I had seen the cleaning woman several times. She was tall, dark-haired and in her 50s, but how would I know her name? I handed in my paper, leaving the last question blank. Just before class ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our quiz grade. "Absolutely," said the professor. "In your careers you will meet many people. All are significant. They deserve your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say "hello."
I've never forgoten that lesson. I also learned her name was Dorothy.

2. - Second Important Lesson Pickup in the Rain
One night, at 11:30 p.m., an older African American woman was standing on the side of an Alabama highway trying to endure a lashing rainstorm. Her car had broken down and she desperately needed a ride.
Soaking wet, she decided to flag down the next car. A young white man stopped to help her, generally unheard of in those conflict-filled 1960s. The man took her to safety, helped her get assistance and put her into a taxicab.
She seemed to be in a big hurry, but wrote down his address and thanked him.

Seven days went by and knock came on the man's door. To his surprise, a giant console color TV was delivered to his home. A special note was attached..
It read:
"Thank you so much for assisting me on the highway the other night. The rain drenched not only my clothes, but also my spirits. Then you came along. Because of you, I was able to make it to my dying husband's bedside just before he passed away...

God bless you for helping me and unselfishly serving others." Sincerely, Mrs. Nat King Cole.

3 - Third Important Lesson - Always remember those who serve.
In the days when an ice cream sundae cost much less, a 10-year-old boy entered a hotel coffee shop and sat at a table. A waitress put a glass of water in front of him.
"How much is an ice cream sundae?" he asked. "Fifty cents," replied the waitress.
The little boy pulled is hand out of his pocket and studied the coins in it. "Well, how much is a plain dish of ice cream?" he inquired. By now more people were waiting for a table and the waitress was growing impatient.
"Thirty-five cents," she brusquely replied. The little boy again counted his coins. "I'll have the plain ice cream," he said. The waitress brought the ice cream, put the bill on the table and walked away. The boy finished the ice cream, paid the cashier and left. When the waitress came back, she began to cry as she wiped down the table. There, placed neatly beside the empty dish, were two nickels and five pennies.. You see, he couldn't have the sundae, because he had to have enough left to leave her a tip.

4 - Fourth Important Lesson. - The obstacle in Our Path.
In ancient times, a King had a boulder placed on a roadway. Then he hid himself and watched to see if anyone would remove the huge rock. Some of the king's wealthiest merchants and courtiers came by and simply walked around it. Many loudly blamed the King for not keeping the roads clear, but none did anything about getting the stone out of the way. Then a peasant came along carrying a load of vegetables. Upon a approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his burden and tried to move the stone to the side of the road. After much pushing and straining, he finally succeeded. After the peasant picked up his load of vegetables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been. The purse contained many gold coins and a note from the King indicating that the gold was for the person who removed the boulder from the roadway. The peasant learned what many of us never understand! Every obstacle presents an opportunity to improve our condition.

5 - Fifth Important Lesson - Giving When it Counts...
Many years ago, when I worked as a volunteer at a hospital, I got to know a little girl named Liz who was suffering from a rare &serious disease. Her only chance of recovery appeared to be a blood transfusion from her 5-year old brother, who had miraculously survived the same disease and had developed the antibodies needed to combat the illness. The doctor explained the situation to her little brother, and asked the little boy if he would be willing to give his blood to his sister.
I saw him hesitate for only a moment before taking a deep breath and saying, "Yes I'll do it if it will save her." As the transfusion progressed, he lay in bed next to his sister and smiled, as we all did seeing the color returning to her cheek. Then his face grew pale and his smile faded. He looked up at the doctor and asked with a trembling voice, "Will I start to die right away". Being young, the little boy had misunderstood the doctor; he thought he was going to have to give his sister all of his blood in order to save her.

Lastly, but Most importantly................. "Work like you don't need the money, love like you've never been hurt, and dance like you do when nobody's watching."

Recreation Report: Northwest Zone: Fishing - Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife:

Northwest Zone: Fishing

ALSEA RIVER : Good catch rates of winter steelhead have been reported throughout the Basin and should continue through the weekend. Good numbers of hatchery fish are returning to the Al sea hatchery and many hatchery adult steelhead are being recycled back into the fishery. During high flows, anglers should concentrate on upper river and headwater areas first as river conditions improve more rapidly. Current river levels and forecasts can be found at http://www.nwrfc.noaa.gov/river/station/flowplot/flowplot.cgi?TIDO3.

Oregon Fishing Update
Willamette Valley/Metro - With many professionals obligated to the annual Sportsmen's Show this week and prime conditions existing on most of Oregon's river systems, anglers should be excited about this weeks prospects.
Columbia River sturgeon anglers are struggling to find success. Gorge anglers drew a blank over the weekend and boaters in the Portland to Longview stretch didn't fare much better. Some of the best sturgeon fishing remains in the Bonneville Pool where 11 boats tallied 2 legal fish retained with 1 legal and 41 shakers released. Smelt remains the best bait but sand shrimp will produce results as well. "

"ANYONE CAN LEARN"
Who says I can't use the computer, Ron taught me everything I know. So you see anyone can learn to use a compute, for games, e-amil, research or what ever you want to do on your computer. There is a whole new world out there and you don't have to even leave your home. So just watch for the classes and sign up on the clip boards at the club house.

School Daze

School Daze ..

Today we had computer school at the clubhouse. We ran three of the four sets of classes scheduled (5:00pm class was a no show except for one and we will teach him privately at a later date). 15 folks went through the hour long sessions. Jacky Thomas assisted the students. To those of you that attended and came away with something tell everybody so they will sign up for the next set coming soon.

A course designed by Sid Adkins is coming and we have Donna Davi warming up in the wings to teach a class in Excel spread sheets. Donna has a sign up sheet on the bulletin board now so she can gauge interest in this class. Sign up now ... Class sizes will be limited. We may be able to persuade Diane Doyle to teach a bit too and maybe even Bill Holt... So keep tuned for future announcements ,here and on the Bulletin Board.

I will be talking to Sid and seeing how he wants to run the next series of classes and if he would like me to help teach as well. So expect a class description and sign up soon.

Meanwhile, the future of the computer lab is getting brighter. We will be hooking up the high speed internet network in the clubhouse for the next few days. Mr. Brian Friterer, the managing owner of our park, has kindly offered to pay for high speed internet and allow us to share the hook up with the office.  This is a very nice gift indeed as it comes to about $600 a year.

As you know the Social Club voted to allow me to purchase the hardware to build the network. That is done and most of the cabling is done. Now comes installation. Along the way Ron Gibbs donated a WIFI router and as a result of that we will have wireless internet access in the clubhouse. That means you will be able to bring your laptop to the clubhouse and go on the internet if you have the capability.

So if you are looking for me you will probably find me at the end of a cable in the club house with a screw driver in hand for the next few days. Please come and use and play in the computer lab.. Fun for you.

Face transplant recipient Isabelle Dinoire faces the world Isabelle Dinoire

Isabelle Dinoire showed a new face to the world yesterday. To a storm of flash bulbs and camera shutters, she appeared before a two-hour press conference, sometimes bewildered, sometimes amused, sometimes irritated, but always dignified and courageous.

Mme Dinoire, 38, had the lower half of her face replaced two months ago in the first transplant operation of its kind. She put her rebuilt face on public view before the TV cameras in Amiens, in northern France, in an attempt, once and for all, to satisfy the world's (understandable) prurience and curiosity.

What do you look like when you've had someone else's nose, lips and chin sewn on to your own face? Remarkably normal, actually. Mme Dinoire slurred her speech. Her mouth seemed partially frozen open, as if she were under a dentist's local anaesthetic. Her lower lip did not move when she spoke, as if she was a ventriloquist. Faint scars were still visible around the oval of her transplanted features.

Otherwise, you might have passed her in the street and not given her a second look. She was a slight, pretty woman, with rather untidy, dark blonde hair. She could talk reasonably well. She could smile, at least partially. She could drink from a white, plastic cup (provoking another storm of camera shutters).

'I have a face again, like everyone else,' she said. 'I can open my mouth and I can eat. In the last few days, I have been able truly to feel sensation in my lips, my nose and my mouth.'

Asked to compare the way she looked now with her appearance before she was disfigured in an attack by her own dog last May, "

Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital celebrates American Heart Month
With Launch of New Equipment

Beginning Monday (2/13) during American Heart Month, Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital (SPCH) will make an exiting new technology available in the more rural areas of Lincoln County. When called to attend a victim of cardiac arrest due to heart attack or other causes, emergency responders (EMTs) will now be equipped with new automated cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) equipment. The new equipment enables the EMT to provide a patient suffering from cardiac arrest (stoppage of the heart beat) to have the best chance for survival. The device was featured on ABC’s World News Tonight in December of 2005.

These Zoll-Revivant AutoPulse devices have been made available through generous grant funding from the Spirit Mountain Community Fund/Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde ($25,000), The Governor John A. Kitzhaber Community Hospital Grant Program ($1,100), the Siletz Tribal Charitable Contribution Fund ($12,500), and the Pacific Communities Health District Foundation Cardiac Fund (4,000).

These first three AutoPulse units will be carried by first responders from Toledo Rural Fire Protection District, the North Lincoln Fire & Rescue District at the North Station and at the Central Oregon Coast Fire & Rescue District in Waldport. This geographic spread will provide transport assistance on Highways 101, 18, 20 and 229. Additional support is being sought to purchase a unit for the Siletz Rural Fire Protection District.

In the past two years SPCH has helped catalyze the Cardiac Performance Improvement Program for Lincoln County. High quality cardiac care is a signature service of Samaritan Health Services. With an aging, rural population, mortality resulting from heart disease in the county is more than 25% higher than the state average over the past five years. Heart disease is a major concern in Lincoln County.

Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital, Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital and Cardiac Consultants of Corvallis are working together to address challenges posed by Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) in the county.  A number of factors were tracked for a two- year period with the time delay from initial event onset (ACS) to arrival at the hospital for care being scored the number one priority.

This program identified ways to maximize resources currently available and also designated equipment and approaches that could significantly impact emergency intervention procedures to reduce the severity of ACS. New strategies and protocols have greatly improved the transport time.

This program has garnered national recognition and is establishing new quality standards for rural hospital care and outreach, made up of preventative education and emergency response factors. Melissa Swancutt, RN at SPCH and a member of the study team, presented the program to the national Rural Health Governing Council last year.

“The American Heart Association stresses that a strong ‘Chain of Survival’ can improve chances of survival and recovery for victims of heart attack, stroke, and other emergencies.  There are 4 major links in that chain:  The first link is Early Access – recognizing an emergency and calling 911.  The second link is Early and Effective CPR.  The AutoPulse offers exciting technology for effective CPR.  Our current EMS providers in the outlying areas of the county sometimes have to perform manual CPR for up to (or even in excess of) an hour.  The AutoPulse provides efficient and highly effective CPR – and it doesn’t get tired.  The third link is early defibrillation – an arm of project and a keen interest for the Cardiovascular Consultants group.  The fourth link is early advanced care; the part of the Cardiac Performance Improvement project we began with.”

We know that as a patient is transported to either the Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital or Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital many entities may be involved. This training will prepare personnel at each involved entity to be trained personally or to receive training from one of your assigned trainers.

Training on the AutoPulse throughout the county the week of February 13. Those attending are employees and volunteers with the three recipient fire departments, Newport Fire, Siletz Fire, the SPCH Emergency Department, SNLH Emergency Department, and Pacific West Ambulance.

A healthy debate over whether humans should go to the Moon’s well-studied equatorial regions or its more enigmatic but sunny poles is emerging among lunar researchers, as NASA pushes towards a return to the Moon.

Reminiscent of debates seen during the planning stages of the Mars rovers mission, its central question asks whether robotic landers and later human missions should focus on the known equatorial regions or the promising, but still largely unknown, polar regions of the satellite."

On my soap box

On my soap box...

By Ron Thomas

We attended a party last night.. a birthday party for Bonnie Rose, Lois Bellingham and some other old coot. The party was thrown by that wild and crazy couple Jean and Jim Hart. It was a good-un and lot of fun. We learned a lot about friends and neighbors. Funny how when you were in grade school, all through the growing up experience the ladies gathered into one group and the men into another... Things have gotten older but we’re still doing the same thing.

Any way the conversations that come up tend to give me an insight into this article and I hope to present you all with some new thinking and a different way of looking at ... you guessed it ..your computer.

Our generation and those in front of us have been short changed.. The rest of the world is using computers as second nature to do all kinds of things to make life more interesting and livable. While many of us have adopted the idea that the computer isn’t much good for anything beyond playing games, email and an occasional look at a favorite catalogue.

The geeks of our group old folks and those younger coming behind us toward retirement know differently but run into a barrier when trying to stir interest among our segment of folks. There is a mistaken belief that doing things on the computer is hard... That couldn’t be further from the truth. Millions of hours have gone into making the computer extremely simple and making it do many things instead of one thing. The fact is you don’t know the computer and what it can do for you because you don’t believe it can do anything for you so why waste your time... To that I say arghhhhhh!

Thanks to a number of folks we now have a computer lab and we have a small cadre of instructors forming (3) but as time marches on and the younger retirees come to our community there will be more. Courses will start basic from the ground up. You will learn the lingo and then in a systematic way you will get to progress at your own speed.

You can ask that question that you can’t get an answer for because you think it is dumb.. No question is dumb. Your courage to ask enlightens others who have the same question but are more timid to ask it.

At some point the computer will begin to enhance your life, answer your questions, allow you to visit places and events that you only read about, take care of business at lightening speed. Shop safely without traveling to Eugene. Play complex games with other residents instead of against yourself. Learn the ins and outs of email, why you need a security program and how it works. Save all your pictures in an online album or on a CD. Make posters and birthday cards for your group. Run a part time business, Sell and buy on ebay with safety.. set up and shop for groceries on line and have them waiting for you at the store or if enough people learn how maybe they will deliver them too. Learn how to let the computer keep track of your personal finances so that at tax time you press a button and all of your information is there. Create a webblog (Blog) that serves a hobby of yours like poetry, or finding your ancestors or philosophical points of view, Political discussions, religious points, family news.

This attitude changing event starts this week at the clubhouse and it starts basic and it’s dedicated to you. To give you the tools you need for an even brighter retirement.

Of course we all remember the saying, “You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink.”

UCLA paleobiologist J. William Schopf and colleagues have produced 3-D images of ancient fossils — 650 million to 850 million years old — preserved in rocks, an achievement that has never been done before.

If a future space mission to Mars brings rocks back to Earth, Schopf said the techniques he has used, called confocal laser scanning microscopy and Raman spectroscopy, could enable scientists to look at microscopic fossils inside the rocks to search for signs of life, such as organic cell walls. These techniques would not destroy the rocks."
