By Dan Gilgoff

Imagine an America with no more red or blue states.

That's the upshot of a plan unveiled Thursday by a new coalition of former senators and representatives to Congress that would essentially replace the Electoral College system of electing presidents with one that handed the White House to whichever candidate won the popular vote. Called the National Popular Vote, the coalition plans to lobby state legislatures nationwide to sign a compact requiring states to hand all their electoral votes to the presidential candidate who wins the national popular vote."

USNews.com: Nation & World: The Misty Pilots: "The Misty Pilots

By Rick Newman and Don Shepperd

Nearly 40 years ago, the Air Force headquarters in Saigon formed a top-secret unit called Commando Sabre—radio call sign 'Misty'—that flew risky, often terrifying missions over North Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh Trail in two-man F-100 jet fighters, scouring the terrain for targets. The Misty pilots had no laser targeting pods or smart bombs or night vision goggles, yet they developed many of the tactics the Air Force still uses today over Iraq, Afghanistan, and other hot spots. For their contribution to aerial warfare, the Mistys paid a price—of 157 pilots who served in the unit, 34 were shot down, some twice. Many were saved in spectacular rescues. Four were captured and imprisoned in Hanoi. Seven were lost and listed as missing, then ultimately declared kia: killed in action. This is the story of one."

You can literally breathe it in. Less smog, less congestion, fewer crimes, and cheaper house prices are only a few of the things drawing retirees away from the city. Small town living is becoming very attractive to retirees, especially in states such as Colorado and Wyoming. Retirees and those thinking about it, like the first baby boomers who turned 60 this year, want to live in a locale with plenty of amenities, a low cost of living, little congestion, and a clean environment, according to Brookings Institution demographer William Frey."

COMPUTER UPDATE

COMPUTER UPDATE!!

Hey hey hey!! We got a computer lab that is hot.. Cooking on the front burner.

We now have all the computers on hi-speed internet in the lab and in the office... That means 7 people can be on the internet in the lab simultaneously and each go their own way. But wait there is more... Do you own a laptop computer? You do? Well you should know that the LVH Clubhouse is now a WiFi Hotspot. That’s right .. you can hook up to our own LVH wireless network anywhere in the clubhouse and surf the net.

We are having some difficulty with the lab’s printer but our in house expert.. Jim Dodd’s is researching that and we expect it to be on line soon. When it does start working you will be able to print to it from each computer in the lab.

As we have said Jim Dodds has provided technical expertise and many hours reconditioning and installing Windows 2000 and huge amount of software valued at $14500 on our computers. Today he came to do the final hook up of the lab and office computers. We did the donkey work providing cables, routers and switches and he put the magic touch on the software that brought it all together. While he was doing it he pointed out to me that each of our lab computers is protected by Norton Anti virus for over 3 years which he also loaded on to each of them free of charge...

Folks I have been saying thank you to Jim for so much.. I just hope you thank him when you see him too.

About two or three weeks ago Ron Gibbs asked if we could incorporate a wireless network into the clubhouse with a router that he had bought but never used. Always ready to take a leap at that word free I jumped. After I had it in my hot little hand I asked Jim Dodds if he thought we could do it. Of course we can. Well Ron if you read this it works just dandy. Bring your laptop to the clubhouse and give it a try.

Let’s not forget, the social club sprang for the roughly $300 that it took to buy the top of the line equipment that operates all this new high tech stuff. I hope you stop by the lab or bring your laptop up and give it a try... It’s ours and it’s great.

Lastly, Brian Friterer, managing owner of the park had Charter hi-speed internet installed in the clubhouse and is paying the monthly cost for it.

You folks got a good deal here. Sid Adkins... you asked if we had internet hooked up... well Sid,, you betcha!!

YOU HAVE TO BE OVER 40........

Mom used to cut chicken, chop eggs and spread mayo on the same cutting board with the same knife and no bleach, but we didn't get food poisoning.
My Mom used to defrost hamburger on the counter AND I used to eat a bite raw sometimes, too.
Our school sandwiches were wrapped in wax paper, in a brown paper bag, not in icepack coolers, but I can't remember anybody getting e.coli.
Almost all of us would have rather gone swimming in the lake instead of a pristine pool (talk about boring), no beach closures then.
The term cell phone would have conjured up a phone in a jail cell, and a pager was the school PA system.
We all took gym, not PE... and risked permanent injury with a pair of hightop Ked's (only worn in gym) instead of having cross-training athletic shoes with air cushion soles and built-in light reflectors.
I can't recall any injuries but they must have happened, because they tell us how much safer we are now... Flunking gym was not an option... even for stupid kids! I guess PE must be much harder than gym.
Speaking of school, we all said prayers and sang the National Anthem, and staying in detention after school caught all sorts of negative attention. We must have had horribly damaged psyches.
What an archaic health system we had then. Remember school nurses? Ours wore a hat and everything, and she could even give you an aspirin for a headache or fever.
I thought that I was supposed to accomplish something before I was allowed to be proud of myself I just can't recall how bored we were ! without computers, Play Station, Nintendo, X-box or 270 digital TV cable stations Oh yeah..and where was the Benadryl and sterilization kit when I got that bee sting? I could have been killed! We played 'king of the hill' on piles of gravel left on vacant construction sites, and when we got hurt, Mom pulled out the 48-cent bottle of Mercurochrome (kids liked it better because it didn't sting like iodine did) and then we got our butt spanked! Now it's a trip to the emergency room, followed by a 10-day dose of a $49 bottle of antibiotics, and then Mom calls the attorney to sue the contractor for leaving a horribly vicious pile of gravel where it was such a threat.
We didn't act up at the neighbor's house either, because if we did, we got our butt spanked there, and then we got butt spanked again when we got home. I recall Donny Reynolds from next door coming over and doing his tricks on the front stoop, just before he fell off. Little did his Mom know that she could have owned our house. Instead, she picked him up and swatted him for being such a goof.
It was a neighborhood run amuck. To top it off, not a single person I knew had ever been told that they were from a "dysfunctional family". How could we possibly have known that we needed to get into group therapy and anger management classes? We were obviously so duped by so many societal ills, that we didn't even notice that the entire country wasn't taking Prozac!
How did we ever survive?
LOVE TO ALL OF US WHO SHARED THIS ERA, AND TO ALL WHO DIDN'T---- SORRY FOR WHAT YOU MISSED. I WOULDN'T TRADE IT FOR

Ron Thomas and Sid Adkins were teaching residents basic computer skills today at the LVH's Club House. There has been a very high interest in the different levels of the computer classes offered at the Computer Lab put together by our great leader and resident Ron Thomas, plus help from many others. Formal Computer Classes...

In a month or so Sid Adkins will be posting for folks to sign up for a course that he developed for the Senior center. It’s geared to give us a structured and systematic way to learn computers. Regardless of what you have been learning this way is sure to be a better way. His course is set so that the students progress at their own speed without waiting on others. He has been kind enough to let me see the course outline and I think you will enjoy this course very much indeed. Sid has some business to take care of before beginning this course for us. But we are all looking forward for his guiding hand in the near future.

Meanwhile, we will continue to put on the mini-series dedicated to developing skills that we have heard folks ask for. All though there is sometimes dozens of ways to do something on a computer we will try to teach the simplest way we know of.

Some of the courses will incorporate the LVH School House web page and the many lessons written there by Jim Dodds and myself. We have been finding that many folks have not learned just a few beginning key strokes and terms and this is probably the reason they have found difficulty in learning computers. We learn from the class what those things are through their questions and try to bring them back to the class in the next lesson. For this reason two of the next things we will learn is how to load a new program onto the computer. How to fix the screen size so you don’t have to get down on top of it to see what’s going on.

This sure am fun!

Donna Davi is thinking about teaching another EXCEL spread sheet course... Be sure and ask her. Anybody else out there want to give us a helping hand up?

Reminder: It's Longview Hills Pool night, starting at 7:00PM the pool sharks come together to see who can out play eachother. Anyone is welcomed to come joy in with the fellowship, ladies the door is open for you also. So if you like to play pool or would just like to watch come by the Club House at 7PM tonight. Enjoy!!

Seniors need drug-plan information, not politics

I don't usually personalize stories this way, but this time, I will: My mom, a smart and sprightly senior citizen (she would never forgive me if I told you her age!), has not yet even inquired about whether she might be eligible for the new Medicare prescription drug benefit. I have asked her about it more than a few times and given her some suggestions about whose advice to get on it (her pharmacy, her doctor, her insurance person), and each and every time I get a response that says, 'Yes, honey, I will do it.' Only I get the feeling that she thinks it's waaay too complex and not that much of a benefit, anyway."

Well it seems to me we have an opportunity to have some more fun with the interest shown here. I think you can see what you voted for and how many are interested in what you would like to do. For those with a few that would like to make a start you need to meet but first you need to find out who your interested friends are. Maybe a signup poster on the bulletin board would help you get started?

For me, I am going to figure out an organizational meeting date for those interested in a computer club and what it would do. We will get a poster up soon. Then we will meet and set up what it is a LVH computer club does.

I am willing to set up for the other groups to if someone of those interested will give me a call ..We can make a poster and sign up roster and show you how to reserve the clubhouse.. Let me know.

Who wouldnt Agree

Who wouldn’t Agree?

The diversity and the level of interest has picked up considerably here on the website. It’s easy to see why too. The addition of fresh new ideas from Charles Burke has helped a lot. Now let me say that more diversity can only make this an even better site to visit.

We can use more folks writing, taking pictures and sharing their experiences. You wouldn’t have to do it on a large scale. Write as often as you like with no deadlines and follow a couple of easy rules about content. Want to learn how? Now that we have a computer lab it will be easy to show you how just as soon as we get our new internet broadband connection up and running. I foresee a class or two on writing for the website and how to build your own website.

When we have a list of reporters beside Charles and me on the left side of the page .. all writing and sharing this will be a terrific website.

One thing for everyone to consider is this log is the never ending story of our little community on the Oregon Coast. Someday your great, great grandchildren will read about your life here and what we did.. What we thought.. Who we were.  Already our Archives (everything ever written on the website) stretches back over 3 years. You can access them on the left side of the page. In the last year or so, most of the pictures are also being stored in the archives..  They will be able to see what we looked like and how we dressed. You probably have nothing like this for your family extending into the future.

As time moves on we hope to pass this site on to another caretaker who will watch over it until they pass it on to another future resident. Come join Charles and me write the history of a small community on a hill in Newport, Oregon.

Send either of us an email at the addresses on the left side of the page. Or get ready to sign up for classes.

Theo Ratliff is expected to miss at least another week, while Joel Przybilla is out indefinitely. Seung-Jin is a 7'3', 305 pound center that is still a raw project. He's averaging just 3.0 PPG and 4.5 RPG in his previous two starts.

AS states get ready to comply with a law passed last May and roll out Real ID's (think 50 flavors of enhanced drivers' licenses that will also, for lack of anything more suitable, regulate access to airplanes, bars and banks), it might be time to consider a national identification card.
