Prepare for Freaky, Creepy Mole Crabs on Oregon Coast Beaches

Prepare for Freaky, Creepy Mole Crabs on Oregon Coast Beaches: "Oregon Coast) – It’s a beautiful day at the beach – in, say, Cannon Beach, Newport, one of those cool hidden spots south of Yachats, Oceanside or maybe the mystical Neskowin. It could be anywhere. You’re wading in the water, careful to watch the breakers for major sneaker waves, and you notice something odd washing past your feet continually."

The Register-Guard, Eugene, Oregon, USA: "Seabirds' nesting habits show what it takes in rocky relationships
By Winston Ross

NEWPORT - Have you ever wondered how in the heck a pelagic cormorant manages to build a nest of seaweed and grass on a vertical rock face on a rugged coast such as Oregon's - a nest that actually sticks around long enough to produce cute little cormorant chicks? Or what all that white stuff is on the black rocks to which they cling?

The answer to both questions could be found at the first 'Bonding With Birds' event, held over the weekend at the Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area.

Warning: It's a little gross."

Some Folks Care So much about the Neighborhood Watch Radio Network and CERT...

Benefactors that want this community to be prepared for the worst have been continually supporting the CERT team with things that will do just that.

Those 2 stretchers that the fire department and ambulance services literally drool over came through benefactors of this community and they were not cheap, money wise nor effort wise. They live among you. Some are on the CERT team but many are not. Some folks have donated radios so CERT communications can have spares to help through the long haul.

There have been inventions made for us to safely bring your animals to shelter. Bandages were made from donated sheets. We have two large nice First Aid Kits that we will put into service this week. One donor gave us access to a portable generator and supplied us with a CB radio. (CB works on different frequencies than our FRS radios and gives us more depth in communications)

The team itself has got itself certified by the Red Cross for first aid, CPR and AED (Automatic Electrical Defibulator), attended Rescue events at other cities and at Samaritan Hospital. They have developed plans and staged practice rescues here in the park and have been involved in a wind power outage in the park where they invented the idea of a park wide emergency radio system, and combined it with Neighborhood Watch. They were able to help a distressed neighbor that became disorientated and could only find his FRS radio. They have tied this park to Lincoln County Emergency Services and established a helicopter Landing Zone with the owner of our local golf course. Some members have gone to Incident Command School learning how to direct disaster operations. Recently 2 members became HAM radio operators after studying for 14 weeks and other will test this Saturday.

There is more .. at our breakfast some folks put $8.10 in our Kitty that we left standing on a table and last night at the Cinco de Mayo pot luck we received donations of $23 more in our jar.

Now, we have another generous gift. We were given 4 superior radios with rechargeable batteries and 4 battery chargers. We told you about them last month and thought we would give them to those that could not afford a radio. Turns out no one took us up on that. So now we are looking to give them to any block captain that will keep them turned on as long as they can and tuned to CH6 FRS in the park. Naturally if that should not be possible for some reason CERT would like the radios back.

If you would use one of these radios contact Marlene Crites, Rod McCready, Ruthanne Carson, or Jacky Memoli (they are your Neighborhood Watch Coordinators) and we will get them out to you ASAP.
