Happy New Year!

Jacky and I wish you the best for the coming year and wish to confer this ancient blessing on each and every one of you, " May the cold nose of a camel thrust underneath your tent never reach your back whilst you slumber."

Attend the New Years festivities at the clubhouse this evening. We won't be there because the cold nose of a camel got us down with the flu and we fear we are contagious to other folks.

We will look forward to seeing everyone next year.

He is a doctor and innovator. Years ago, he took aim at a medical curse that has disabled millions of people and defied treatment. He came up with a cure that was astonishingly simple. No surgery. No pills.

Now, think: Would his colleagues cheer his stroke of ingenuity by spreading the news -- and practice -- of the treatment to relieve suffering?

No. Inexplicably, they rejected him, ridiculed him, heaved accusations that threatened his license to practice medicine."

Departing Arcata... All Aboard!

We are close.. Hope to be home today. I can hear the Oregon Angels singing at the border... Come ye all who are tired of brown sky and desert waste decorated by blown trash of dead grass and brown , brown, brown. Come to the Green.. We're coming.. Hope we don't get a speeding ticket even Betsy the car is in a hurry to cross that border.

Following the old adage...

That visiting relatives and dead fish are welcome for a very limited amount of time...

We start the journey home tomorrow. For those that want to follow the convoluted route around the Los Angeles traffic here is how we go to Lori's home.

  • I-10 west from Beaumont to Redlands
  • 57 north to north San Bernaardino
  • I-215 north junction of 215 and 15 San Bernardino
  • 15 north to Cajon Pass Summit
  • 18 west to junction of 395
  • 395 north to Kramer Junction in the Mojave Desert
  • 58 west to Bakersfield
  • 99 south to junction of 119 (3 miles)
  • 119 west (7 miles)
  • I-5 north
  • 152 west
  • 101 north
  • To Sunnyvale..
very easy.. very peaceful.. traffic nil and mostly freeway or 4 lane divided road 70 mph speed limit. No Kidding! And when you consider the amount of time traveling at 19 miles an hour with stop and go traffic in LA and surrounding area.. a heck of a lot faster. Check road conditions on the 395, 58 and Cajon Summit for snow or ice before using this route.

Two days rest then home to Newport.

New Look!!

We are going with the new look to the site for awhile. The picture on the top will change on a regular basis. I find spectacular pictures to put there every so often. Like to have pictures of Oregon. Beach scenes are nice. Pictures from around the local area are best. Got any truly spectacular pictures? Send them to me.

Want E-Mail? No Computer? No Problem, Larry Magid: HP Printing Mailbox Allows You To Receive E-Mail, But Not Send It - CBS News: "
(CBS) While it seems as if PCs, the Internet and email are ubiquitous, there remain a substantial number of Americans who aren’t online. My mother-in-law Lucy is one of them. She’s managed to live 80 plus years without a PC and she’s not about to get one now. That’s OK except for one thing. Until very recently, not having a PC made her the only member of the extended family that can’t receive or send email. Now, thanks to a new printer called the HP Printing Mailbox, she can receive email though she still can’t send it.

The printer was loaned and service provided for evaluation purposes.

The printer, which costs $149 plus $9.99 a month for the service, doesn’t even have a USB or printer port. Instead it has a phone jack and is designed to connect to a standard phone line. The printer then c calls a service to download mail. "

TIME.com: The FDA's Painkiller Warning: How to Avoid Taking Too Much -- Page 1

TIME.com: The FDA's Painkiller Warning: How to Avoid Taking Too Much -- Page 1: "According to Dr. Charles Cain, director of anesthesia at New York Presbyterian Hospital, it's not that hard to reach these danger levels. The average adult should not exceed 4g of acetominophen a day. If someone is taking two extra-strength tablets of Tylenol, which are 500 mg each, every four hours (instead of the recommended every six hours), and then adds a few doses of a cold medication during the day, then they're easily reaching about 4g-6g of acetominophen a day. Do that over a few days, says Cain, and you could damage your liver. Since most people are on several different types of medications already, the liver may be more vulnerable to danger when it's hit with an excess of acetominophen to process. And that's even before the glass of wine or bottle of beer that many of us like to have at the end of day; alcohol also puts the liver to work, and the combination of everything at once may be the perfect storm that sends the liver into failure."

U.S. To Upgrade Tsunami Alert System, President Bush Signs Bill To Revamp Warning Apparatus - CBS News

U.S. To Upgrade Tsunami Alert System, President Bush Signs Bill To Revamp Warning Apparatus - CBS News: "The 680-mile-long Cascadia subduction zone lies off the coasts of Washington and Oregon and is similar in size and geologic character to the fault that caused the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. The last major Cascadia quake occurred 300 years ago and hit the West Coast with an estimated 30-foot high ocean surge.

The U.S. Geological Survey estimates a 10 percent to 14 percent chance of another major Cascadia quake within the next 50 years. A tsunami generated in the subduction zone or in Washington's Puget Sound would allow for a warning of less than 20 minutes, which makes tsunami education and efficient evacuation plans essential, Cantwell said.

CHRISTMAS TREE GIFT PROJECT

Those of you who took ornaments off the Christmas tree in the Clubhouse, or just brought gifts down to donate, we want to extend our most heartfelt thanks. We dropped them off this morning (and there was a car full)and were fortunate enough to meet the mother of this family. By the time we got home we had a telephone message from her thanking us for everything. She said she hoped we had a Merry Christmas because she knew her family was going to, even her dogs. She had a catch in her voice and I found I then had one in mine. It is amazing how giving a little time and money, when multiplied by many, can make such a difference. Wayde and I, Virginia Dale, and Marlene Crites would again like to thank you for your generosity . . .MERRY CHRISTMAS to you all!

Residents and Officials: Oregon Coast Storm as Bad as 1995

Residents and Officials: Oregon Coast Storm as Bad as 1995: "Many parts of the coast are still in the dark, with the 35 miles from Manzanita to Warrenton out of power. Parts of Astoria are out as well. While most of Newport has power, there are reports the outages may be from Lincoln City all the way to Warrenton."
Here is a aprt rumor and part truth about a recent event. The moral of this story might be to get you to rethink your ideas about keeping your home locked up.

(the true part) Brian Hudson called Jacky about 11:00 pm Wednesday and said there were a couple of strange guys fooling around with the forest gate and walking around the area. Jacky told him to call 911.

Well he did... Our police came and caught them.... Now the next part I heard from Ed Simon. He said that the 2 men caught were arrested for Meth cooking. The truck they were using was left on the forest road that leads to the transmission tower above the park. The police were going to return to go over the truck for evidence but the forestry service pushed it out on to LVH property and in so doing comprimised the evidence that the truck held.

This part is true... While doing a sweep of the neighborhood as we do from time to time I saw the truck parked on the entrance to the forest road with a red letter from Larry Henson on the windshield.. I think that is part of the procedure to have a car towed from the park.

Now the good part is you folks tell us what you know about the event. Fix the mistakes and tell us what happened.

2 lessons I can see ... Locking your home and garage would be a good thing. Calling 911 when something is a miss should be your very first thought. I know the Police Chief and he has told me on more than one occasion that he wished people would call as soon as possible so they could have a chance to catch the bad guys. Calling 911 after they are gone doesn't let them nail these thugs.

My kudos to Brian Hudson.
In San Jose at about 10:00pm

Jacky drove the daylight out and I took the dark shift. This way we get free room and board at Lori's. We used to stay in Eureka overnight but $70 for a hotel is incentive along with high gas prices to make the trip in one leap without a stop over.

101 was our route and it was a good drive without snow or ice. We spoke with Bonnie and Jim Rose on their way north bound on 101 and even waived at them as we passed each other near the mall in Eureka.

They should be home at LVH tommorow. We will rest up a couple of days and head down toward Palm Springs on Tuesday.

Hey want to get Grandma and Grandpa a cool gift?

You too Kids..

You know those walkie talkie radios that you use to find your kids or parents at Disneyland? Grandma and Grandpa could use one to keep in contact with the local emergency team if there is ever a problem with a power loss here at the park where they live. One with a battery charger would really be nice.

Staples, BestBuy, Fry's, Fred Myer all have models. They are called FRS or GMRS radios. Really the least expensive are as good as the more expensive models..
Updating Jack Mitchel,

Folks tell me Jack is sporting a brand new pacemaker is home and doing well. Whew! Good to hear. If you get a chance wave to Jack or put a get well card in his box. Great to have you back with us Jack.
A sensitive request....

From time to time things happen in our community that do not get out. Relying on your descretion I would appreciate it if you could email me or one of the staff or tell Jacky when something of import happens in a neighbor's life.

  • A new grandchild
  • A passing of a loved one
  • A new neighbor moves in
  • A member of the community is ill
  • Some event needs to be put on the calendar
If we have that information we can share it so all can rejoice or empathise. This is a more caring way we would like to see exhibited here on the LVH website. You bet we want to see pictures of your latest grandbaby! An obituary for a passing.. Why not? Celebrating and welcoming a new Neighbor..great idea. keeping up and sharing the load with a sick friend a good support idea. Change the calendar? Jacky or I can change it with a few key strokes.

Why make this statement? Recently, while planning for coverage of oxygen during a power outtage I called a husband of a lady and was explaining to him what CERT was planning to do for his wife when he stopped me and said his wife had died a few days ago. He said they didn't know anyone in the park and just told Larry Henson. After I removed my foot from my mouth I visited with Larry and he pointed out he keeps a list of those that pass away on the glass window to the office in the dining hall.. How often would a person have to check that glass? Can't we all as neighbors share these type of things?

Well, I don't know it just seems to me that one purpose of this little news letter is keep residents upto date on what's happening. I have found that others are ill or having major surgery and not even known about it until they are well again. It is pretty easy to make this situation better just tell us and we will get the word out to everyone.

Charles Burke updates his status in this email for us....

Well, Frida came to Eugene yesterday and got there around 10:45AM and I hope to be signed out of the Hospital within a two hour period, but didn't happen. The Doctor didn't get by to see me until around 3PM and had some good news and some bad news. The good news is that she was going to release me to go home and of course follow up with my Doctor here. She stated that I still had some pneumonia in both lungs and also there was a problem with my white blood count and that a lung specialist Doctor was going to come by to see me before we left for Newport. When he finally got by to see me it was after 4PM and spent some time with Frida and I to state that I have a problem other that the pneumonia, yes as people have been saying what can happen next and so this is next. Back in the 70's down in Albuquerque I was told that I had this blood disorder by the name of EOSINOPHILIA and not sure where or when I got it. They advised me that I should have my blood check yearly to see where the count was at. It has been around 17 thousand over many years and this time when they checked my blood in Eugene it had jumped to 24 thousand, normal I believe is around 8 to 10 thousand. The lung specialist Doctor stated that my case of Pneumonia was different from a person who would come down with regular Pneumonia. So he wants me to be on antibiotics for around 3 more weeks and then go back to Eugene to see him for more test. If you look up the medical word Eosinophilia there are many different problems one can have with this. So once I get the Pneumonia cleared up, then he will have a better idea what's going on with me. He advised that I put my other back surgery on hold for now, until this is other problem is taken care of.
So this is about all I know at this time, best not have any visitor for awhile until I build my immune system up and able to fight off virus. So I know all mean well out there and will enjoy your e mails or calls. Thank you to all out there for all the help they have given.

Best to all and hope you will have a safe and joyful holiday.

Christmas Divorce

A man in Phoenix calls his son in New York the day before Christmas
and says "I hate to ruin your day, but I have to tell you that your
mother and I are divorcing; forty-five years of misery is enough".

"Pop, what are you talking about?" the son screams.

"We can't stand the sight of each other any longer," the father says.
"We're sick of each other, and I'm sick of talking about this, so you
call your sister in Chicago and tell her."

Frantic, the son calls his sister, who explodes on the phone.

"Like heck they're getting divorced," she shouts, "I'll take care of
this," She calls Phoenix immediately, and screams at her father,

"You are NOT getting divorced. Don't do a single thing until I get
there.
I'm calling my brother back, and we'll both be there tomorrow. Until
then, don't do a thing, DO YOU HEAR ME?" and hangs up.

The old man hangs up his phone and turns to his wife. "Okay,"
he says, "they're coming for Christmas and paying their own way."

DID YOU KNOW?

Egg sized gravel is being laid on the forest road to the cell phone tower atop Iron Mountain? That is the road behind LVH. Why you say? At he gate of the forest road is a permit for electrical work on a sign board. Ummm? Well as Bill and I went to the forest to find greenery for the upcoming class of wreath making at the clubhouse we found a traffic person at the top of the hill who was directing the trucks where to lay down the gravel.

He said they are strengthing the road because they are going to be hauling a new addition up there that weighs 65,000lbs... What do you think weight like that will do to our entry streets?
Are you in the know?

LVH CERT NEWS:
pictures by Ed Simon

This has been a hallmark week for the LVH CERT team. On Wednesday Greg Pfalmer brought his motorhome to the clubhouse where the entire team participated in a hands on training session. We are confident that every team member can hook up and start the generator and knows all of the safety features and where the circuit breakers and GFI reset buttons are. The unit is capable of 6500watts or 65 amps. This was explained and how not to overload the generator.

We have one more person in the park offering the use of a portable generator and we will be getting with him soon to learn the "how to" on that unit. Meanwhile Greg has made his unit available whenever it is in the park.

Greg Pfalmer's motorhome with the generator enclosure open.

The LVH CERT Team inspects the generator control s.

Greg educates the team on what to do to turn on the generator.

Greg says, "This is the Fuel Primer".

Here we see which control does which job.

Six minutes after the generator starts you have power on this outside outlet unless the GFI is tripped inside next to the shower.

Here is the circuit breaker inside ..underneath the bed.

A Serious Use For Silly String, One Of Many Innovations By U.S. Troops In Iraq - CBS News: "In an age of multimillion-dollar high-tech weapons systems, sometimes it's the simplest ideas that can save lives. That's why a New Jersey mother is organizing a drive to send cans of Silly String to Iraq.

American troops use the stuff to detect trip wires around bombs, as Marcelle Shriver learned from her son, a soldier in Iraq.

Before entering a building, troops squirt the plastic goo, which can shoot strands about 10 to 12 feet, across the room. If it falls to the ground, no trip wires. If it hangs in the air, they know they have a problem. The wires are otherwise nearly invisible. "

Newport the Center of Whale Watch Tourism on Oregon Coast: "Newport, Oregon) – You could say, “Seein’ is Baleen in Newport” these days.

It’s no fluke that Oregon State Parks schedules its annual Winter Whale Watch for the week after Christmas. This year it’s set for Dec. 26, 2006, to Jan. 1, 2007 - a week when both gray whales and the people who love them are on the move. For these seven days, volunteers will be stationed at overlooks and parks all over the central coast, helping both children and adults learn about gray whales and how to spot them in the ocean."

The discovery of carvings on a snake-shaped rock along with 70,000-year-old spearheads nearby has dramatically pushed back the earliest evidence for ritual behavior, or what could be called religion. The finding, which researchers have yet to formally publish, comes from a cave hidden in the Tsodilo Hills of Botswana, a mecca of sorts for the local people, who call it the Mountain of the Gods."

Bill Bradbury - A Better Way to Vote - washingtonpost.com: "A Better Way to Vote

By Bill Bradbury
Sunday, November 19, 2006; Page B07

SALEM, Ore. -- This month, as controversies emerged in other parts of the country over polling place problems and malfunctioning touch-screen machines, we here in Oregon prepared to swear in a new crop of elected officials with nary a question about the legitimacy of the count or the functioning of our electoral process. We accomplished this with a turnout on Nov. 7 that was, once again, among the highest in the nation. How? With Vote by Mail.

One episode that highlights its success occurred in Tillamook County, where 13 inches of rain on Election Day sent many citizens scrambling to the safety of shelters under a declared state of emergency. Despite the fact that many roads were impassable and parts of the county were inaccessible -- conditions that would have crippled turnout in a state that relied on conventional polling places -- 70 percent of the voters cast ballots. Only voting by mail could have led to this outcome.

Voting by mail was launched statewide through a people's initiative in 1998, which passed by a 70 to 30 percent margin. Every registered voter receives a paper ballot in the weeks before Election Day. The ballot can be either mailed back or dropped off at one of a number of secure sites statewide.

The system has proven to be fraud-free. Oregon is one of only two states in the nation to verify every single voter signature against the signature on that voter's registration card. Our process is transparent and open to observation. "

Adopt a Family...

In the past was founded and spearheaded by Marlene Crites who has been the driving force behind arranging for our adopted families and seeing that they receive the gifts in such a manner as not to be seen as charity. Her perception and kindness have been translated into a lot of hard work in the past. Jim and Bonnie Rose were her special elves sharing the work in the background.

Now she has passed this tradition onto Barb Dudley and Ginger Dale. Why Marlene has bowed out as the leader of this event is simple... She has found new interests to devote her attention to and realizes she cannot do a great job on a lot of things and so has chosen to focus on her latest projects.

Marlene is concentrating on her position of Team member on the Longviewhills CERT TEAM (Community Emergency Rescue Team) and to reforming the Neighborhood Watch program. At times these new duties can be overwhelming and so she chose to become an advisor to Barb and Ginger who are our new Adopt a Family committee.

Personally, I would like to thank Marlene for all she does for our residents and to add to Ginger and Barb to call on me if you need help.
THE CERT TEAM WILL HELP INSTALL A HIGH TECH WARNING SYSTEM ON YOUR CELL PHONE OR YOUR COMPUTER!!!

SCAN USA... SAFE COMMUNITY ALERT NETWORK. Presented by AT&T

Some of you have seen the poster on the bulletin board. Above is the link to where you can sign up. Here is how it works...

AT&T and government and private partners are providing this as a free service to Americans all over the country. They will call your cell phone or send you an email immediately when an alert is posted on a local or national network. You select the alerts you want to be notified about and assign each one whether it is a cell ph alert or an email alert or both..

Personally, I have signed up for alerts pertinent to Lincoln County but if you have a relative you are watching after anywhere in the states you can sign up for that too by zip code.

We will list the alerts you can have momentarily but we would like to take a minute and explain one type of alert to you.

Tsunami.... This alert is very important to us here on the coast. Within minutes of an alert being generated you can have this one sent to your Cell Phone and to your computer. Now that will cover a lot of time for a lot of us. However, it is missing one ingredient.. What about the time when we are sleeping at Oh dark thirty? CERT team members are going to set up a duty roster on which 2 members at a time keep their Cell phones on 24/7 and by their beds just to cover this eventuality. We will sound the alarm if you are asleep.

We think this is a vital way to look after the community’s well being. All the other alerts we would like to have we are having sent to our individual email. Tsunami, though is one you need to have on your cell phone. If your neighbor doesn’t have a cell phone make a deal with them to inform them of a tsunami alarm.

Alert Type:
  • Health Advisory
  • Sexual Predator Alert
  • Environmental Alert
  • Neighborhood Crime Alert
  • Weather Alert
  • Public Safety
  • Cyber Alert
  • Neighborhood Announcement
  • Amber Alert
  • Local Emergency Alert
  • Consumer Fraud Alert
  • Homeland Security Alert
  • Consumer Information
  • Fire
  • School Emergency
  • Traffic EmergencyAlert
  • Tsunami Alert
  • FDA Recall Alert
You can set up one or all of the above alerts. You can have them sent to your cell or computer or both.

Now we know that some don't have a computer... You don't need one if you have a cell phone. We also know that enrolling in programs such as this are mindboggling for some of you. You simply have a hard time with the computer...

So, CERT (we) will enroll you if you have a computer. Here is what we can do. You can send us your name and email address and what alerts you want from the above list and tell us whether you want them sent to your cell phone, email or both. We will go online and register you. When we are done SCAN USA will send you an email saying you are registered and to visit their site to confirm you are the right person. We will give you a password so that you can do that.

From then on you are on your own.. Change your password if you like, add or drop alerts or cancel out of the service.
I just read the December "View From The Hill". I am sure everyone will agree with me that we have a real find in Charley Currey. He is witty, intelligent and charming and will definitely be a great addition to Longview Hills. I am just wondering if Bentley should have had his name included on the front page . . . Welcome, Charley, and thanks.

TO ALL LVH RESIDENTS

We all have the opportunity to make Christmas extra special for some deserving people. We are initiating the “Adopt a Family” program again this year, and those who would like to participate may do so.

Take a look at the large poster in the clubhouse. There are a number of “ornaments” on the tree. Each has the name, age and request of a recipient. Please take one or more ornaments and purchase the gift(s). If it is difficult for you to get out and shop, you may make a cash donation. Place your cash or check (payable to LVH Social Club) and write “Adopt a Family” in the memo area. Place in a sealed envelope and drop into the safe Social Club slot under the personal cubby holes.

There will be a box marked “Adopt a Family Gifts.” Place your wrapped gift, with the first name of the recipient attached, into the box. It will be emptied daily by someone on this committee. All gifts will be delivered to the family in need, before Christmas. From all of us . . . thank you for your thoughtfulness and generosity. Happy Holidays!

Puffing on Polonium - New York Times: "uffing on Polonium

WHEN the former K.G.B. agent Alexander V. Litvinenko was found to have been poisoned by radioactive polonium 210 last week, there was one group that must have been particularly horrified: the tobacco industry.

The industry has been aware at least since the 1960s that cigarettes contain significant levels of polonium. Exactly how it gets into tobacco is not entirely understood, but uranium “daughter products” naturally present in soils seem to be selectively absorbed by the tobacco plant, where they decay into radioactive polonium. High-phosphate fertilizers may worsen the problem, since uranium tends to associate with phosphates. In 1975, Philip Morris scientists wondered whether the secret to tobacco growers’ longevity in the Caucasus might be that farmers there avoided phosphate fertilizers."

Not-So-Glamorous Conservation Works Best, Little Things Like Fluorescent Bulbs And Efficient Appliances Can Make A Big Difference - CBS News

Not-So-Glamorous Conservation Works Best, Little Things Like Fluorescent Bulbs And Efficient Appliances Can Make A Big Difference - CBS News: "When high school science teacher Ray Janke bought a home in Chicopee, Mass., he decided to see how much he could save on his electric bill.

He exchanged incandescent bulbs for compact fluorescents, put switches and surge protectors on his electronic equipment to reduce the 'phantom load' — the trickle consumption even when electronic equipment is off — and bought energy-efficient appliances.

Two things happened: He saw a two-thirds reduction in his electric bill, and he found himself under audit by Mass Electric. The company thought he'd tampered with his meter. 'They couldn't believe I was using so little,' he says. "

Dunkleosteus terrelli Image: Field Museum, Chicago
The fish would have been a formidable predator
A prehistoric 'Jaws' that roamed the seas 400 million years ago had the most powerful bite of any living fish.

The extinct creature, Dunkleosteus terrelli, could bring its jaws together with a remarkable force of 5,000 Newtons (1,100lbs-force).

This performance surpasses all known fishes, including today's great white shark, and puts it up with some of the most powerful bites in all animals.

Details appear in the UK Royal Society journal Biology Letters"

Japanese scientists have expressed their delight at the performance of the Hinode spacecraft which was sent into orbit in September to study the Sun.

The probe has returned remarkable close-up images of solar features that researchers hope will yield valuable new insights into the star's activity.

Hinode's primary goal is to investigate solar flares, colossal explosions that occur in the Sun's atmosphere.

The platform was built with the assistance of UK/US research teams.

A NEED FOR TOWELS

From a phone conversation with Sue Wilson...

Sue called and wanted me to put an ad on the website. You know the Wilsons and Simons are involved in the capture and nurturing of wild birds that have become injured. Seems that in the course of their work they have used up a lot of towels...

Towels you say? Yep.. They get the birds stablized, put then in a box lined with a nice warm towel and a bottle of water then send them off to Astoria to be helped by a vet and then after they are recovered back into the wild they go.

A while back you saw them releasing a bald eagle back into the forest after her broken wing healed from pictures here on the web page.

The Wilsons would appreciate any used towels that you were planning on recycling for this good purpose. Sue said she really does not want dirty towels if you take my meaning. I already tried to get her to launder our towels and return them but her response was less than enthusiastic.

She pointed out that some of these animals have sharp beaks and the towel can help there too. I never saw a beak sharpening towel but if you have one the birds and the Wilsons would appreciate your donation.

Give them a call.
