Research: Older adults are happiest Americans - USATODAY.com

Research: Older adults are happiest Americans - USATODAY.com: "This is partly because older people have learned to lower their expectations and accept their achievements, said Duke University aging expert Linda George. An older person may realize 'it's fine that I was a schoolteacher and not a Nobel prize winner.'

George, who was not involved in the new study, believes the research is important because the general public continues to think that 'late life is far from the best stage of life and they don't look forward to it.'

Yang's findings are based on periodic face-to-face interviews with a nationally representative sample of Americans from 1972 to 2004. About 28,000 people aged 18 to 88 took part.

There were ups and downs in overall happiness levels during the study, generally corresponding with good and bad economic times. But at every stage, older Americans were the happiest."

The Fishing Club was getting ready to leave this morning for the
tour of the Oyster Farm when Dick and Bev Garvey walked in. It was
nice to have them back and we enjoyed our visit. We got a picture of
them at the Oyster Farm. Welcome home.
Here is my daughter's latest adventure in fine dining... I'm sharing this email with you and a link to the TV story.... Click on the video to appreciate this experience...

It's sort of like "Where's Waldo" but here's the link to the Foundation Fighting Blindness Dining in the Dark fund-raiser I attended earlier this week at the Ritz-Carlton in San Francisco. That's my water glass Mr. Reporter Man just shoved his fingers into....

Jet Streams Are Shifting And May Alter Paths Of Storms And Hurricanes

Jet Streams Are Shifting And May Alter Paths Of Storms And Hurricanes: "ScienceDaily (Apr. 17, 2008) — The Earth's jet streams, the high-altitude bands of fast winds that strongly influence the paths of storms and other weather systems, are shifting--possibly in response to global warming. Scientists at the Carnegie Institution determined that over a 23-year span from 1979 to 2001 the jet streams in both hemispheres have risen in altitude and shifted toward the poles. The jet stream in the northern hemisphere has also weakened. These changes fit the predictions of global warming models and have implications for the frequency and intensity of future storms, including hurricanes."

Older Americans Are More Socially Engaged Than Many People May Think

Older Americans Are More Socially Engaged Than Many People May Think: "new University of Chicago study shows that older people remain vital and active members of society as they age, despite a popular notion that they are more likely to be socially isolated.

A research team found that although older individuals have fewer intimate relationships, they may respond to social loss by becoming more likely to volunteer, attend religious services and spend time with their neighbors than those in their 50s."

Much of Oregon, SW Washington to see snow this weekend - NewsFlash - OregonLive.com: "The National Weather Service says northwest Oregon and southwest Washington will likely see snow this weekend after having 80-degree weather last weekend.

Forecasters say the unseasonably cold weather means snow levels down to 1,000 feet or even 500 feet, with a mix of rain and snow on the valley floors.

Morning temperatures Sunday and Monday are expected to drop to 25 to 30 degrees, putting vulnerable spring plants at risk.

Cities affected include Astoria, Cannon Beach, Tillamook, Lincoln City, Newport, Florence, Grande Ronde, Swisshome, Hillsboro, Portland, Salem, Eugene, Vancouver and Mount St. Helens."

LIFELINE LECTURE

by ron thomas

Lifeline, the community service that is a terrific fit for Seniors living alone will make a presentation at the clubhouse on Thursday, April 24th.

Lifeline works through Samaritan Community Hospital. I'm not exactly sure how it works and that's why you will see me there at the lecture.

Here is the way I've been told it works.... You sign up for a modest monthly fee. They give you a pushbutton pendant that goes around your neck. You wear it all the time you are at home... If you push the button a signal is sent to your telephone and it dials the Lifeline Service. The signal goes to an operator who has a list of phone numbers that you have given LifeLine. They then call those numbers until one answers. They tell your friend or relative you have sent an emergency signal. That person then (whom you have provided a key to your home) goes to your home and checks on you... If no one from your list answers LifeLine calls 911.

Why? Do you need this? The answer lies in your lifestyle.

If you are single, living alone, my personal opinion is you need this. If you are single and fall like Nancy Moore recently did and spent a couple hours crawling from her front porch to the telephone.. you need this.

If you are single and stand up and twist your ankle like Ruthanne Carson just did.. you need this .

If you became dizzy while sitting in your favorite livingroom chair away from your telephone like Charley Curry did... you need this.

If you are single and fall and can't get up... you need this.

Living in CA. my wife's Mom fell and broke her hip.. hours and hours she struggled to get to the phone.. Wish we had known about lifeline...

Now you children and grandchildren living out there and reading this... Is grandma or grandpa or Mom or Dad living at Longview Hills .. alone? Step up to the plate and make sure they are safe. Talk to them... Make sure they go to the lecture.. If you can, get them the service, It's a good deal and cheap peace of mind insurance.

Lifeline is on the internet... do a search, find it. I wrote this because a single lady asked Larry Henson if she could use the LVH office as her number to call for help.. Answer no because Oregon law does not allow him to enter her property as the landlord's agent.

Living here is not like living anywhere else you have lived, I'll wager. Over time you will know and be on speaking terms with everyone. Everyone, not just the people on either side of your home and the one across the street like where you came from. This place is special... If you have a single person nearby ask them to come to this presentation...

Not All Smoke Alarms Created Equal

Not All Smoke Alarms Created Equal: "“The study results are significant,” said Dr. David Grossman, a pediatrician and study co-investigator who is now medical director for preventive care at Group Health in Seattle. “Though the U.S. has made great strides in getting these life-saving smoke alarms in people’s homes, we still have a long way to go to make sure that they remain operational. Photoelectric alarms may be a key answer to providing longer term protection.”"

Discovery News : Discovery Channel

Discovery News : Discovery Channel: "Seven feathers that either belonged to a non-avian dinosaur or an early bird have been discovered encased in amber in a remarkably vivid state of preservation, according to a recent Proceedings of the Royal Society B study.

The 100-million-year-old amber, excavated from a Charente-Maritime quarry in western France, was found near the fossilized teeth of a troodontid dinosaur. Troodontidae is a family of bird-like, two-legged dinos that, other fossils suggest, had feathers and laid eggs in nests, just as birds do today."
