The HSUS Cautions Motorists that Leaving Pets in a Parked Car Can Have Tragic Consequences

The HSUS Cautions Motorists that Leaving Pets in a Parked Car Can Have Tragic Consequences: "The HSUS Cautions Motorists that Leaving Pets in a Parked Car Can Have Tragic Consequences

WASHINGTON—Pet owners should never leave their animals unattended in a parked car for any period of time, cautions The HSUS. On a warm, sunny day, the temperature in a parked car can reach dangerous levels, 120ยบ in minutes, even with the car window partially open.
“A pet can quickly suffer brain damage or die from heatstroke when trapped in these high temperatures,” said Martha C. Armstrong, HSUS senior vice president for companion animals and equine protection. “Pets aren’t able to dispel heat as well as humans.” "

A New Stretcher For The CERT Team

We asked for a stretcher to be made for the CERT Team.. Someone was listening. Today we received a prototype model to test. The pictures are below. The craftsman who built it went to the fire stattion and worked with one of the firemen to get the design we wanted.

What we wanted it to be was a backboard stretcher . We also needed it to have features that are not available on a regular stretcher. A regular stretcher is made for two or four people to heft. We need it to adapt to our age and reduced lifting ability. This one can actually have 8 people lifting. Given the size of some of us bigg-uns we need that extra lifting ability.

By having the ability to have more people lifting it also gives us a better use of our resources. It won't have to be all strong men lifting .. the ladies will be able to lift this stretcher too or a combination of both. This means the CERT team will be able to stay in the field doing rescues while others can do transport with only one CERT team member supervising the transport.

Carrying the stretcher long distances is also tiring. So a set of swivel wheels was attached to the bottom of the rig. It is possible for one person to move or pull the rig easily when it is loaded once clear of obstacles.

The rig itself is light weight and can be moved by one person in and out of a building.

Nothing is for sure a good deal untill it passes the test of having been used. That is why this is a prototype. AT this Wednesday CERT Drill we will be testing out our new stretcher. I will be the heavy weight that is lifted at one point. Other practice will be done with the fire dept. dummy. It weighs 185lbs.

We could use some ladies and gentlemen to help fill in the extra slots on the stretcher to help us understand what it is we have to know about using this equipment. Come share the fun .. lend a hand ... 11:00 AM Wednesday at the clubhouse.

Bingo Removed from the calendar

Jim Hart called yesterday and asked that Bingo be removed from the calendar permanently as no one is coming anymore. Jim and Jean have been running Bingo ever since I can remember. They have given many hours to setting up and calling Bingo and as it fades away now (perhaps to be called back at some later date) I can't help but think that the community should thank Jim and Jean for all the years of their dedication to our entertainment.

Don't know what I can do other than say thank you and I will try to follow your fine example of giving to this community.

Is there a Tsunami Alarm in Newport....?

(In a comment in a below article Dick Garvey asked the above question)

The answer simple .... No there is not. The "WHY NOT?" is what we are going to explain as we have heard it from the Fire officials, police officers and fellow CERT members and even from the scientists at the Hatfield Marine Science Center. I can't say exactly who said what but I can give you the run down on the general consensus.

First you need to go back a few articles and remember the difference between a NEAR Tsunami and a FAR Tsunami. This is critical to understanding why Newport chose not to buy a horn.

A FAR Tsunami originates somewhere on the Pacific Rim of Fire well away from the coast of Oregon. Most Likely in Alaska or the Aleutian islands. With this type of Tsunami destruction will be just as bad depending on its size as a NEAR Tsunami. BUT.... BUT.... We have a wonderful advantage here. We have monitoring stations and tsunami bouys that will let us know the wave is coming. We will know by at least 3 hours. The radio and TV will be awash with this warning. Still one wonders what if it is in the middle of the night when most everyone is tucked in their beds with vissions of sugar plums in their heads? Here is where that horn would be a welcome addition to the warning system. The officials feel that the acoustics and shape of our coast would render the horn ineffectual for many parts of Newport. So in addition to the radio and TV the police, fire and CERT teams will be going through the neighborhods warning folks too. Now there is one heck of a warning system that you can buy for about $45 and it is called a NOAA Emergency Radio. This radio will will be the first to receive the warning and it sets off a hellacious alarm in your home that a zombie could not sleep through. I have one and can speak from experience. In our community Joan Corson, Larry Henson and myself have one. Jacky is a block captian and so is Joan. They will activate the Neighborhood watch phone tree and everyone should be notified in 10 minutes or so. The CERT team will activate and start emergency proceedures. It would be nice if more of you had one of these radios. Each one in the park just means another assurance that everyone here will be notified. 3 is pretty skimpy but that's what we have.

That takes care of the Far Tsunami.

Enter the Dragon...... The 1000lb gorrilla. The Near Tsunami.

No horn, no radio, no neighborhood watch, no tv is going to warn you... NADA!

YOUR ONLY WARNING WILL BE A MASSIVE EARTHQUAKE HERE ! (estimated by scientists to be a 9.2) It could happen in your next breath or sometime in the next 200 years according to the geologic record. It last happened in January of 1700. Geologically speaking there has been one eveery 300 to 500 years. As you can see we are presently 6 years into the window.

Once again your warning is the earthquake. 12 to 15 minutes later the Tsunami will arrive. With that large of a quake the roads are likely to be a mess (all torn up). You must get above 40 ft above sea level but the tsunami maps say 50 because there could be a high tide at the same time! Most of the land around Newport is high enough for instance at my home on Windmill my GPS says it is 235 ft. Stay away from beaches and the creeks. The bridge is not expected to stand the force of the Tsunami. Most of South Beach will be inundated. If you are there get to high ground.

AS you can see in the last scenario a horn would be useless as whoever went to set it off probably wouldn't get there in time after the earthquake to turn it on.
Ok
What should the caption for this picture we are using for our theme picture really be?

LVH Movie Stars

Thursday... 7:30 pm Channel 76.

Watch the Local Movie stars Big Fish (Wayne Hill) Sparky (Bill Furgason) dig for clams with the experts on the Oregon Coast Show.

Maybe they will watch their debut on the large screen TV at the clubhouse and sign autographs afterward. In passing Wayne told me on a personal not that Bill is a big camera hog....
Monday night Football at the Clubhouse..

We have had some queries about Monday night football at the clubhouse. Evidently, a lot of people think it's fun to watch the games as a group. However, we need someone to take charge.. Set up what has to be done. Advertise the event reserve the clubhouse .. Those kind of behind the scenes things that take place for every clubhouse event. Jacky and I can help with advertising and securing the clubhouse. But neither of us has the interest in sports to go over and open and close the clubhouse, tend to refreshments, set up chairs, and then make sure everything is clean and put back to normal afterwards.

So you folks that want this to be a new thing for the community... One of you has to suck it up and step up to the plate. It is not a hard thing to do. We can show you how and get you started, help you with the first Monday night and then maybe you guys can form the LVH Sports Club and get more involvement... Simple as that.

Please be motivated.. It just takes one person saying I will give it a try. Call Ron or Jacky Thomas or email us or write a comment to this article. We will help you.. You won't be alone trying to figure out what to do. We can make your event posters and schedules. Put your events on the LVH Calendar, Put your events on the website. We can even build a website for your members just like the Fishing Club website. We are here to help. Let us know.

Did North American Quake Cause 1700 Japanese Tsunami?

Did North American Quake Cause 1700 Japanese Tsunami?: "The chances of another earthquake occurring along the Cascadia fault is '100 percent,' said Kelin Wang of the Geological Survey of Canada, who is also a co-author of the report. 'The question is when, and whether the entire length of the subduction zone will rupture like in 1700.'"

Tuesday...

Went to the dump with all the Computer periphenelia everyone donated to me over the years. This week you can get rid of your stuff for a $1 bill per item. Normally $10 per item. It cost me $17 today. That would have been $170 normally. The high cost is because of all the heavy metal toxic waste contained in these items. You have to do this to keep that stuff out of the ground water and the fish we love. Be responsible dispose of old hardware safely.

I think you can see why I might not want to take old computer items anymore.

The Veterans Administration

Yesterday I went to the VA Hospital in Portland. My first trip there ever. I was to be signed up as a new member.

There were a lot of things I didn't know and I was full of questions. There are a few vets in the park that have not signed up. I can tell you what I have learned and set your foot on the path to joining.

First, know that if you served in the armed services at any time you most likely are eligible. You did not have to be in during a conflict. In fact I would like to thank those of you who by their very presence kept us out of a war.

Next, here is the biggie, The VA is not a medical insurance plan! It is a benefit that you earned by virtue of your service to your country. The VA is more like a safety net that you can fall back on when your regular medical insurance won't cover your problems. Although in many ways it can take the place of medical insurance it has limitations. The number one being in most instances you must go to the VA for treatment. That is not always practical when you live 120 miles from the Portland hospital. If that were your situation (that you lived near the VA) then it could be more like your main hospital plan and looks to me that it would work well under that situation. Thinking about that statement I know Jim Dodds moved close to a VA hospital so his dad could take advantage of it.. Maybe Jim will read this and educate us on the subject?

Also, many of the things that you have to pay for under Medicare are provided at no charge from the VA. For instance A CPAP machine (used by those of us with sleep apnia). The only thing not available is hearing aides and glasses.

You get medications for $8 for a 30 day supply and they come automatically in the mail. No frigging do-nut hole.

You can get treatment at any VA hospital ... Anywhere. Including Guam and Porto Rico.

Need an operation that your insurance won't cover? The VA charge $946 for your first day in the hospital and that covers everything .. After that everything costs $10 a day for 365 days at the end of 365 days you pay $423 for day 366 and then $10 a day for the next year.. etc.

There is more that has nothing to do with medical... One thing I noticed from the handbook is a VA guarnantee refinancing of a modular home even if it is on leased land.

Those people in the park that I have spoken with, that have the VA benefit, say it works with Medicare parts A and B and reduces their medical expense considerably.

As for the Hospital.. I found it to be very efficient and well organized. The people treated use as a patient secondly and as an honored veteran it was something I had never seen before. Everyone that I ran across smiled, addressed me as sir and were extremely solicitous. They could not do enough for you. Another thing that I hadn't seen in a traditional hospital was this had a small px and it had a large Food court just like a mall... all kinds of food at different counters and a restaurant like setting to eat. The entry to the hospital had a vet playing the piano.

Newport News-Times: Weather Service to conduct tsunami warning test

Newport News-Times: Weather Service to conduct tsunami warning test: "Weather Service to conduct tsunami warning test

Test will be Wednesday morning

NOAA's National Weather Service will conduct a limited communications test of the Tsunami Warning System in the coastal areas of California, Oregon, and Washington between 10:45 a.m. and 11 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time on Wednesday, Sept. 13.

The West Coast/Alaska Tsunami Warning Center, located in Palmer, Alaska will disseminate a special test tsunami warning message. The message will be clearly labeled as a test. Upon receipt of the test message, National Weather Service offices responsible for western coastal areas will broadcast a brief message via NOAA Weather Radio, describing the purpose of the test, using the 'Required Monthly Test' (RMT) code. The actual Tsunami Warning code (EAS code TSW) will not be used for this test."
The Great Race....

This morning we had the great race ... 11:14 am Here comes a local Siamese brown and black, longhaired kitty right in front of our hedge out the back window. This kitty is in a dead panic run. About 4ft. behind Kitty comes Bubba the Raccoon loping at a pretty good gait. By the time I got outside both racers were gone. They were headed east.

I wonder if Kitty has a cat door into his home? Bubba may just come in too. This could be interesting...
