Behind the scenes with the LVH CERT Team:

Last night there was a Tsunami warning that splashed across the TV screens. There had been an 8.3 earthquake in the Kiril Islands. The warning indicated a degree of uncertainty if there had been a tsunami generated. Earthquakes over 7.9 can cause tsunami's. The team knows this.

First to find the notice was Marlene Crites who got a phone call from a friend in Yachats. The friend was concerned enough that she visited the fire station across the street to confirm the report. Confirmed she called Marlene. A warning means that there is a possibility of a tsunami. You have to wait then for pressure sensors in the ocean to confirm that there was actually a tsunami generated.

During the wait Marlene started the calling tree to alert the CERT team. As she passed on the warning she told everyone to Meet on CH5 on our FRS radios. Once everyone was assembled and those that had scanners were deployed information started trickling in. Those with NOAA radios listened for an announcement from NOAA which came about every 15 minutes and basically said a tsunami was not projected for the Northwest but for the Japanese Islands of 3 ft.

We agreed to leave our radios on as developments may have changed. Nothing further developed so we went back to our normal state of readiness after a couple of hours.

What you can do when a tsunami alert is displayed on your TV... You can tune to CH 5 on your FRS radio and listen for all the detailed alerts that we have access to. Listen to the team as it ramps up to mobilize or follow the decision making process.

Friday, Jan. 12, 2007 By SANJAY GUPTA, M.D.

The other day I spoke to Dr. Arthur Agatston, creator of the South Beach Diet, and he scared me. I'm glad he did. I'm a 37-year-old man with a family history of heart disease, and the good doctor quickly rattled off several things that I should already be thinking about in terms of preventing a heart attack or stroke. And his concern is not just directed at me. Agatston is an ambitious man. He's written seven books and maintains a full-time cardiology practice, but now has his sights set higher--on healing the entire country. He believes that with a few simple steps he can help eradicate heart disease and stroke in the U.S. He writes all about it in his latest book, The South Beach Heart Program (Rodale)."

Grab your binoculars for a comet party

Grab your binoculars for a comet party: "With clear skies predicted, Northwest sky watchers may get a look at Comet McNaught, which could be visible to the naked eye low in the west-southwest sky after the sun sets a few minutes before 5 p.m. It will be in the sky for about an hour.

A clear view of the horizon is essential because the comet is less than 10 degrees high -- the equivalent of a fist held at arm's length. Because it will travel so low, the best views may be on the coast where no natural features, buildings or night lights can interfere. "

What causes societies to collapse? There are a myriad of theories: resource depletion, high taxes, environmental degradation, moral flaws in the citizens of the society, natural disasters such as earthquakes or volcanos, and more. In The Collapse of Complex Societies, Joseph Tainter argues that none of these is an adequate explanation."

SEASIDE, Ore. (AP) — Emergency planners warn that residents of this coastal city might have to live for weeks without their usual supplies of food, water or shelter if the town is flooded by a tsunami.

The city is hiring a tsunami education coordinator to set up a volunteer emergency response program and caches of supplies for immediate needs for evacuated people."

Stem cells extracted from amniotic fluid - USATODAY.com: "If a family 'banked' a baby's amniotic stem cells at birth by freezing them, they could provide a potential line of stem cells to treat diseases the child might develop later, Atala says.

But even more important, because amniotic fluid is so easy to harvest, it would make it possible to create thousands of cell lines.

'If you banked 100,000 specimens, you'd be able to provide cells for 99% of the U.S. population with a perfect match for genetic transplantation,' Atala says."
