Ahoy from California....
We arrived yesterday at 8:04pm in Sunnyvale. The ride was 12 hours and 4 minutes. Stopped 3 times for gas at average of ten gallons per pit stop. About $35 a fill up. Gas is $3.35. Cost of gas one way is $104.
WE made good time even though we stopped for breakfast and lunch. And we got lost in Medford while trying to find the freeway after a gas stop. Our plan was to do the trip in one day so as not to have to stay in a hotel as we usually do. The extra $ could then be used by the gas tank. Why do I think there wil be more creative traveling in the future for seniors?
The San Jaquin Valley was hotter than a pistol but Sunnyvale is not so bad. Today I started on my daughter's office. Building and rearranging office furniture. She bought a new Mac. I never liked macs before but this one is a beautiful work of engineering. I took it out of the box and had it up and running in no time. The whole computer is in the monitor. There is no tower. The monitor is extra wide and just very pretty. The monitor also includes a digital camera and microphone so you can chat without doing a thing. The mouse and key board are wireless. There is a power cord, a modem cord for the internet and a cord for the printer and that's it.
Bill Hanus had thought about buying a new one.. Looks like a good deal to me Bill.

''PINOCHLE PLAYERS TONIGHT AT LVH'S CLUB HOUSE"

Pinochle (sometimes Pinocle or Penuchle), is a trick-taking game typically for two or four players and played with a 48 card deck. Derived from the card game Bezique, players score points by trick-taking and also by forming combinations of cards into melds. Each hand is played in three phases: bidding, melds, and tricks.
A Pinochle deck consists of two copies of each of the 9, 10, jack, queen, king, and ace cards of all four suits (spades, hearts, diamonds and clubs).
Aces are always considered high. The complete ordering of rank from highest to lowest is A, 10, K, Q, J, 9.
Variants of pinochle can be played by two, three, four, five or six players. These variations can combine two Pinochle decks called "double deck".

1:00pm CANASTA PLAYERS MEET AT THE CLUB HOUSE:
Below is alittle information on the nauture of the game and maybe this might draw intererst from residents to come join in the fun. Hope to see a good turn out...the more there are the more tables playing........have fun!
The Nature of the Game
In each hand, usually one partnership is dominant and the other one is submissive. The dominant partnership has many cards, and thus many chances to take the discard pile, and many chances to make canastas. The submissive partnership has few cards, and few chances to do anything.
The partnership that takes one big or a couple of small discard piles becomes dominant. Thus, in the beginning of a hand, you should aim at taking many cards from the discard pile. (Since Canasta is a team game, the aim is getting as many cards as possible from the pile for your team. Whether you or your partner gets the cards is quite irrelevant. However, in the ideal position both you and your partner have many cards in your hands. This is discussed in depth later.) After deciding the dominance, the submissive team tries to go out and the dominant team tries to make the game last as long as possible.
This setting occurs almost certainly when the score required for opening meld is high (that is, at least 90). When the opening meld is 50 for both teams, there may appear also equal hands. In equal hands a continuous battle over the discard pile is going on. You must continuously consider which team wins more by continuing the game, and quickly go out if you think your opponents have better chances to complete canastas. I think there are no special "equal hand" strategies, but you must apply all strategies when they are suitable.

"REMINDER FOR CRIBBAGE PLAYERS"
Time to meet at the Longview Club House tonight from 7p.m. to 9p.m. to play Cribbage, those who would either like to learn or watch, just be a the club house and enjoy the fellowship.
Below is the history of Cribbage.......FYI
Cribbage is one of the earliest and most enduring of the Classic Card Games. Although there is some myth as to the origin of the game, its creation is generally credited to an Englishman, Sir John Suckling (1609-1642). Cribbage was known as "Noddy" prior to the modification of the rules by Sir John. He was a very wealthy man, inheriting a small fortune at the age of eighteen. Travels throughout Europe helped to broaden Sir John's repertoire, and he was regarded as the foremost cardplayer of his time. In 1630, he was knighted by the King, but fell from grace several years later. In 1641, he was involved in a conspiracy to save a friend who was jailed in the Tower of London. The plan failed and Sir John had to flee England for the Continent. Unable to return to his beloved country, he ended his life a year later, at the age of 33. The game of Cribbage is his legacy.
