We are going with the new look to the site for awhile. The picture on the top will change on a regular basis. I find spectacular pictures to put there every so often. Like to have pictures of Oregon. Beach scenes are nice. Pictures from around the local area are best. Got any truly spectacular pictures? Send them to me.

Want E-Mail? No Computer? No Problem, Larry Magid: HP Printing Mailbox Allows You To Receive E-Mail, But Not Send It - CBS News: "
(CBS) While it seems as if PCs, the Internet and email are ubiquitous, there remain a substantial number of Americans who aren’t online. My mother-in-law Lucy is one of them. She’s managed to live 80 plus years without a PC and she’s not about to get one now. That’s OK except for one thing. Until very recently, not having a PC made her the only member of the extended family that can’t receive or send email. Now, thanks to a new printer called the HP Printing Mailbox, she can receive email though she still can’t send it.

The printer was loaned and service provided for evaluation purposes.

The printer, which costs $149 plus $9.99 a month for the service, doesn’t even have a USB or printer port. Instead it has a phone jack and is designed to connect to a standard phone line. The printer then c calls a service to download mail. "

Exxon Valdez oil tanker spill off Alaska
The disaster devastated miles of Alaskan coastline and wildlife
A US court has almost halved the damages oil giant Exxon Mobil must pay for a 1989 oil spill off Alaska.

The San Francisco Federal appeals court reduced the payment from $4.5bn (£2.3bn) to $2.5bn (£1.3bn), saying the previous decision had been excessive.

It is the third time damages in the case have been reduced."

TIME.com: The FDA's Painkiller Warning: How to Avoid Taking Too Much -- Page 1

TIME.com: The FDA's Painkiller Warning: How to Avoid Taking Too Much -- Page 1: "According to Dr. Charles Cain, director of anesthesia at New York Presbyterian Hospital, it's not that hard to reach these danger levels. The average adult should not exceed 4g of acetominophen a day. If someone is taking two extra-strength tablets of Tylenol, which are 500 mg each, every four hours (instead of the recommended every six hours), and then adds a few doses of a cold medication during the day, then they're easily reaching about 4g-6g of acetominophen a day. Do that over a few days, says Cain, and you could damage your liver. Since most people are on several different types of medications already, the liver may be more vulnerable to danger when it's hit with an excess of acetominophen to process. And that's even before the glass of wine or bottle of beer that many of us like to have at the end of day; alcohol also puts the liver to work, and the combination of everything at once may be the perfect storm that sends the liver into failure."

U.S. To Upgrade Tsunami Alert System, President Bush Signs Bill To Revamp Warning Apparatus - CBS News

U.S. To Upgrade Tsunami Alert System, President Bush Signs Bill To Revamp Warning Apparatus - CBS News: "The 680-mile-long Cascadia subduction zone lies off the coasts of Washington and Oregon and is similar in size and geologic character to the fault that caused the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. The last major Cascadia quake occurred 300 years ago and hit the West Coast with an estimated 30-foot high ocean surge.

The U.S. Geological Survey estimates a 10 percent to 14 percent chance of another major Cascadia quake within the next 50 years. A tsunami generated in the subduction zone or in Washington's Puget Sound would allow for a warning of less than 20 minutes, which makes tsunami education and efficient evacuation plans essential, Cantwell said.

Mount St. Helens Lets Off Some Steam, Volcano Emits Impressive Plume That's Visible 50 Miles Away - CBS News

Mount St. Helens Lets Off Some Steam, Volcano Emits Impressive Plume That's Visible 50 Miles Away - CBS News: "Like a giant smokestack, percolating Mount St. Helens let loose a billowing steam plume easily seen Tuesday in downtown Portland, Ore., about 50 miles away.

Cold weather combined with the volcano's ongoing release of water vapor to make the display particularly impressive, scientists said. Mount St. Helens has been undergoing a low-key eruption since September 2004. "

Brain training can have lasting benefits - USATODAY.com: "By Lindsey Tanner, The Associated Press
CHICAGO — Brief sessions of brain exercise can have long-lasting benefits for elderly people, helping them stay mentally fit for at least five years, one of the most rigorous tests of the 'use-it-or-lose-it' theory suggests.

For people age 73 on average, just 10 sessions — less time than it takes to stay physically fit — helped keep their brains sharp."

CHRISTMAS TREE GIFT PROJECT

Those of you who took ornaments off the Christmas tree in the Clubhouse, or just brought gifts down to donate, we want to extend our most heartfelt thanks. We dropped them off this morning (and there was a car full)and were fortunate enough to meet the mother of this family. By the time we got home we had a telephone message from her thanking us for everything. She said she hoped we had a Merry Christmas because she knew her family was going to, even her dogs. She had a catch in her voice and I found I then had one in mine. It is amazing how giving a little time and money, when multiplied by many, can make such a difference. Wayde and I, Virginia Dale, and Marlene Crites would again like to thank you for your generosity . . .MERRY CHRISTMAS to you all!

Residents and Officials: Oregon Coast Storm as Bad as 1995

Residents and Officials: Oregon Coast Storm as Bad as 1995: "Many parts of the coast are still in the dark, with the 35 miles from Manzanita to Warrenton out of power. Parts of Astoria are out as well. While most of Newport has power, there are reports the outages may be from Lincoln City all the way to Warrenton."
Here is a aprt rumor and part truth about a recent event. The moral of this story might be to get you to rethink your ideas about keeping your home locked up.

(the true part) Brian Hudson called Jacky about 11:00 pm Wednesday and said there were a couple of strange guys fooling around with the forest gate and walking around the area. Jacky told him to call 911.

Well he did... Our police came and caught them.... Now the next part I heard from Ed Simon. He said that the 2 men caught were arrested for Meth cooking. The truck they were using was left on the forest road that leads to the transmission tower above the park. The police were going to return to go over the truck for evidence but the forestry service pushed it out on to LVH property and in so doing comprimised the evidence that the truck held.

This part is true... While doing a sweep of the neighborhood as we do from time to time I saw the truck parked on the entrance to the forest road with a red letter from Larry Henson on the windshield.. I think that is part of the procedure to have a car towed from the park.

Now the good part is you folks tell us what you know about the event. Fix the mistakes and tell us what happened.

2 lessons I can see ... Locking your home and garage would be a good thing. Calling 911 when something is a miss should be your very first thought. I know the Police Chief and he has told me on more than one occasion that he wished people would call as soon as possible so they could have a chance to catch the bad guys. Calling 911 after they are gone doesn't let them nail these thugs.

My kudos to Brian Hudson.
In San Jose at about 10:00pm

Jacky drove the daylight out and I took the dark shift. This way we get free room and board at Lori's. We used to stay in Eureka overnight but $70 for a hotel is incentive along with high gas prices to make the trip in one leap without a stop over.

101 was our route and it was a good drive without snow or ice. We spoke with Bonnie and Jim Rose on their way north bound on 101 and even waived at them as we passed each other near the mall in Eureka.

They should be home at LVH tommorow. We will rest up a couple of days and head down toward Palm Springs on Tuesday.
