"In democracy it's your vote that counts; In feudalism it's your count that votes."

Charlene Shimek

During the night Charlene Shimek passed away at Samaritan Hospital in Corvalis. Our deepest sympathy and best thoughts to husband Dee and their relatives.

Dear Lincoln County Friends and Merchants,

It is my privilege to thank you once again for another successful year of the annual SHOP WITH A COP program.

Each Holiday Season, this program establishes a positive rapport with less fortunate children of the Lincoln County community and the Law Enforcement Officers from the Oregon State Police, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Newport Police Department, Lincoln City Police Department, Toledo Police Department and the United States Coast Guard.

Employees from the Department of Human Services, the District Attorney’s Office, OSP and even Santa, volunteer their time to participate and assist with making this event the success it has become. The participating officers also look forward to interacting with the children in a happy and friendly setting.

Each year we seek monetary donations from the community. This program is completely funded by 100 % of YOUR donations, and each dollar is tax deductible! The more money we collect, the more children can participate in this worthwhile and fun event.

Thank you for your continued support and consideration for our local Shop With A Cop program. If you have any questions, please call me at (541)270-4817 or e-mail carla.urbigkeit@state.or.us.

Sincerely,

Carla Urbigkeit, Senior Trooper

Oregon State Police – Newport Patrol Office

Information Statement

Information Statement: M 5.0 045 SW ATKA VILLAGE, AK. 2327Z OCT 31: Tsunami NOT expected

On October 30th Don Mann, General Manager of the Port of Newport, spoke to the Longview Hills Fishing Club about the construction of the International Dock currently underway. He presented a slide show explaining the construction currently underway and the importance of having the dock as it would bring jobs, income from the distant fishing fleet as well as possible tourism dollars from cruise ships. Of special importance to us all, especially members of Central Coast CERT and Longview Hills CERT, is that the construction will be such that in the event of a tsunami or earthquake, the dock will be built to stay in place and could possibly be "Ground Zero" and the point where goods and services would originate from. Mr. Mann invited anyone interested in this project or who had questions to feel free to visit him at his Port Office.

Free Epson Photo Printer

And free food to go with it (1 p-nut butter & jelly sandwich)

I have heard Seniors like two words... Free and Food... So Jim Rose is trying to give away this perfectly good printer and I thought his chances would be better if he gave some food with it too.

Find him in the local phone directory and give him a call.

Night Landfall

Night Landfall: "It was in 1996, on our first passage with Chiron from Seattle to her homeport in Newport, Oregon. Due to engine problems, we were several hours late getting to the waypoint outside of Yaquina Bay and we were faced with a night approach. Standing off until morning was not a reasonable choice since the weather was deteriorating and the engine was still uncertain."

History News Network: "Here’s a fantasy for Americans exhausted by this endless presidential campaign. Imagine a campaign limited to six weeks. Imagine a campaign that cannot bombard voters with advertisements, because each television station makes available 390 minutes for political commercials which a broadcasting authority allots based on the various parties’ relative strengths. Imagine a campaign with restrictions on fundraising and campaign spending – that candidates actually follow."

PC World - Christian Science Monitor Goes Online-Only: "In the first of what could be a series of print newspaper closings, the Christian Science Monitor has announced the end of its daily print format and its switch to a Web-based publication. Starting April 2009, the 100-year-old news organization will no longer publish daily physical newspapers and will focus its content on the Internet. It will, however, publish a weekly print magazine."
