Slowing Down Speeders -- Pavement Markings Make Drivers Feel They Are Going Too Fast

Slowing Down Speeders -- Pavement Markings Make Drivers Feel They Are Going Too Fast: "October 1, 2006 — Engineers have developed new pavement markings that give drivers the illusion that the car is moving faster than it really is. The markings, called optical speed bars, are series of lines painted at decreasing intervals on the road. Early tests show the bars are getting drivers to slow down"

Wind-powered 'Ventomobile' Places First in Race

Wind-powered 'Ventomobile' Places First in Race: "In this first time ever race the participating teams were challenged to drive directly into the wind, without tacking. During the preliminary races, the Stuttgart Ventomobile had already proven to be the most lightweight and most efficient vehicle among the contestants when, with its 130 kg, it succeeded in racing at 64% of the wind speed directly against the wind. From then on it was considered a serious contender for the win."

Hurricane Gustav to Become Gulf Coast Monster?

Hurricane Gustav to Become Gulf Coast Monster?: "High-pressure 'ridges' repel storms, so if the developing ridge north of Cuba is strong, Gustav could be deflected westward and into the central Gulf of Mexico, where vast stretches of warm water could supercharge the storm as it heads for the U.S. coast.

But if the high-pressure system wanes, Gustav could turn north, unimpeded, and move overland, across Cuba. The temporary lack of contact with warm water would deprive it of power."

Earthquake Zone Off Oregon Coast Surprisingly Active

Earthquake Zone Off Oregon Coast Surprisingly Active: "The Blanco Transform Fault Zone likely won't produce the huge earthquake many have predicted for the Pacific Northwest because it isn't a subduction zone fault. But the scientists say an earthquake of magnitude 6.5 to 7.0 is possible, if not probable in the near future, and their analysis suggests that the region may be under some tectonic stress that potentially could affect the Cascadia Subduction Zone."

BBC NEWS | Science/Nature | Arctic ice 'is at tipping point': "The National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) says that the ice-covered area has fallen below its 2005 level, which was the second lowest on record.

Melting has occurred earlier in the year than usual, meaning that the iced area could become even smaller than last September, the lowest recorded.

Researchers say the Arctic is now at a climatic 'tipping point'."

Three Bizarre Beaches of the Oregon Coast

Three Bizarre Beaches of the Oregon Coast: "(Oregon Coast) – One cloisters Oregon's strangest and most clandestine tourist attraction: the year-round 'ghost forest.' The other two sit almost completely hidden from everyone except serious beachgoers: one with its wild, dangerous cliffs and strange fauna; the other barren of people almost all the time.

They all hover in and around Lincoln City, within 30 miles of it on either side. And they are spectacular and downright odd in many ways. Here, you'll find yourself alone to explore the unusual nooks and crannies each provides, as well as views of the coast you can’t find anywhere else."

Stories from the sandstone: The Register-Guard, Eugene, Ore.: "CANYON DE CHELLY NATIONAL MONUMENT, Ariz. — This majestic canyon is lined with towering red sandstones. But the physical landscape is only part of the draw.

Canyon de Chelly — replete with thousands of ruins, carvings and paintings on stone — is revered by the Navajo people. It is classified as a living monument by the National Park Service. Over campfires, during a hike through the canyon’s trails, by horseback or by jeep tour, visitors can get a sense of the canyon’s history and its spirituality."

PC World - Eight Crazy E-Mail Hoaxes Millions Have Fallen For: "Congratulations, you won the lottery in a country whose name you can't even pronounce! A wealthy oil executive in a far-off land wants to give you millions of dollars, right now! Sexy girls want to meet you!

Now let's be honest. If someone came to your door and told you any of those things, you'd tell him to get lost. So why do people still fall for this stuff when it's in their e-mail, as if a poorly written message made a weird-sounding pitch any more legitimate?"
