Somethings that individuals report about CH 6 and my personal opinions thrown in...

At the Cert/Neighborhood Watch meeting yesterday some things came up... I've been thinking about them. Here then are my personal thoughts.

A concern was put forward that there is too much chatter on FRS CH 6 and it should be used for emergency information only....

What I think....

Well, when CERT first thought the idea up it was thought that maybe announcements of what was going on in the park would stimulate interest in listening to the radio which of course is what we wanted. That would add spice as it were.

It also was a good way to find someone if you did not have a phone available.. you could ask if someone was listening and find them anywhere in the park.

But as we can all hear and understand it is foremost a tool for emergency information dissemination. That said I don't think, personally, that the occasional conversations from park residents are "too much chatter". On the other hand...

Folks should realize that long stories and jokes, etc.. would not be a good idea. I haven't heard anything like that at all though. But a solution for that if you want to have a long radio conversation with someone is really easy. Just tell one another to change to another channel and meet there and have your rag chew. Simple as that.

There is another annoying component to the radio chatter complaint. Some visitors and passer by's on 101 use CH 6 and they do have a bunch of silliness that is bothersome. There is a solution for that and we will be rolling that out in the near future.

Our first concern was to get people to learn how to use and listen to their FRS radios. We needed to make it as simple as possible so people would grasp it and use the technology. As time moved on and folks learn to use their new radios we would be able to refine and use more features on the radios to increase their effectiveness. Here is what is on the horizon...

You already have learned to change channels (remember we moved from CH 5 to CH6?). Now let me tell you about another feature on most of your radios...

Between Ch6 and CH7 there are 32 sub frequencies we can use. They are called privacy codes. We are going to use FRS CH 6 Privacy Code 16 (written as CH 6.16). One day, soon, we will switch to this new frequency. Help will be available when we do it.. (don't do it yet! Wait, it's in the future) When we do this it would be a rare thing to hear anybody but a park resident on our LVH Network. So the chatter will fall off and things will be better. Change takes time. Be patient.

When we start this change over is going to depend on you... When we see that we have around half of residents have radios we will institute the change to the new frequency (Channel 6.16).. You can help us find out when we reach this goal by filling out the signup sheet stating you have a radio on the clubhouse bulletin board.. Tell your friends about this because people always tell me they did not read it here on the website and then I say... "it is posted on the bulletin board" and they say, "I never read the bulletin board" and I reply, "It is posted on the mailroom door." and they say, "I don't read that stuff". Quite frankly, it is hard to find the time to go to everyone in the community and verbally tell them this stuff. You know what I mean? So, a little help out there would be appreciated.

The Neighborhood Watch / CERT Group Met and....

3 dozen doughnuts met an untimely end at the clubhouse yesterday as members of our community's service organizations met to combine resources and make our community a safer and secure place to live.

Your CERT team has an extraordinary dedication to preparing for emergency situations in our area. They meet every Wednesday at the clubhouse for an hour and train. Think about that. For two years they meet every Wednesday. Why would retired people who could be off doing tons of fun stuff meet every week and train to help you?

Myself I am overwhelmed by their generous donation of time and energy. They also participate in other area drills, go to schools for first aid and Incident Command , learn to be HAM radio operators to provide emergency communications to this community. They do that .. but why?

Now the Neighborhood Watch program has been sporadic in what it does community wide. It was a big organization after the Thanksgiving Robbery we had several years ago when 7 homes were burgled. The community came together and Neighborhood Watch became a force to be reckoned with. Over time that enthusiasm waned and members began to drop out or not do what was needed. In time the Watch drifted off into a slumber.

CERT found a use for Neighborhood Watch and felt it would be a great partner during an emergency, saving valuable time at the front end of an emergency. Thus, boosting the CERT team's ability to rescue and save lives. At that point CERT members volunteered to take leadership of the Neighborhood Watch and find a way to make it more efficient and have the two organizations joined at the hip so to speak. All the changes have been made and CERT team members now are resigning their positions as block captains and coordinators and are returning to purely CERT duties because during an emergency they could not possibly do both jobs at the same time.

Neighborhood Watch now has a radio network that allows all members of the community to ask what is going on at any time via FRS CH6. Block Captains and Coordinators have only a small portion of the job they used to do.. They just have to take care of the 6-10 families in their block. They look out for vacationing and just do neighborly things. In an emergency they call in to CERT, over the radio (CH 6 FRS). They monitor CH 6 when they can. That's it. Coordinators keep information and forms flowing to those Block Captains in their area and meet occasionally to make policy changes. Time spent ... hardly any. They need help to bring back the quality that existed years ago.. You can help by being a block Captain or ass't .

Jacky Thomas will be overall Coordinator for awhile with AREAs 1,2, and 3 coordinators as a committee. Area 3 co- coordinators are Ruthanne Carson and Jacky Memoli. Areas 1 and 2 need Coordinators . Block Captains are also needed. ( the jobs are so easy.. I promise) Volunteer!

Coffee and Doughnuts!

Everyone is invited but we really would like to talk to Neighborhood Watch Block Captains Wednesday @ 11:00 AM the 6th of June. For just one hour! Then it's over.. promise.

Here is how it will work... No lecture! Just you sitting with your friends at a table and one or two CERT members sitting with you drinking coffee and eating doughnutz. The CERT members will explain how CERT and Neighborhood Watch work as partners to overcome disaster problems. Specifically, what you do after a disaster and how to call it in. What the new, greatly reduced responsibilities of Block Captains and Co-ordinators are. You could volunteer and you would hardly have to invest much time at all. But, we are all now much safer and better informed because of the changes.

How the Neighborhood Watch FRS radio network works. Why CERT needs to turn everything back to neighbors now that it is in place and go on drilling and working on a comprehensive disaster plan.. How CERT works in an emergency.

THINGS CHANGE...
OUR TRASH HANDLING AT THE
CLUBHOUSE AND AT OUR
HOMES IS ABOUT TO CHANGE

Today Wayde Dudley and I had a conversation with Larry Henson about trash... That's right we were talking trash.

Most of you know that Larry is a Newport Councilman and in that capacity he said he has heard the owner of Thompson's Sanitary service tell about big changes coming in how trash is handled locally. These changes are being driven by new processes and rules for trash handling in the Willamette Valley where our trash is trucked to.

The big emphasis is on Recycling. Many of us received new cans last weekend. Thompson's will be saving money by having uniform baskets that can be lifted by automatic machinery on the truck. Speeding up collection and reducing labor costs. Of course the initial investment for them must be costly.

Now there are a couple of changes that we are seeing at the clubhouse in regards to management's handling of the trash and how we as resident's need to help with these changes. Yes it will be different. No it is not done to be vindictive. Here are the changes as told to us by Larry Henson and the reasons for them.

The large, green garbage can that used to fit in the clubhouse has been replaced by a larger Thompson's can. This larger can will not fit in the kitchen. It has been replaced by a smaller one that is often overflowing. When that happened folks had been advised to take the garbage home and put it in their own cans. This is the point that Wayde and I didn't quite get.

After some discussion Larry says it all comes down to Recycling. He agreed to provide a second garbage can in the kitchen for recycling and when that is filled up we tie up the garbage bag and move it out onto the deck above the basement shop below where they will put it in the recycling can when they come in in the morning. The garbage they will take care of as it fills up.

Now there is another component Larry addressed that deals with outside caterers. He felt that upon some occasions that some of our caterers had hauled trash from other affairs and mixed it in with the catering trash from here in order to save on their own trash bill. The rule he is using for them now is that if they cater they must remove the trash from that event. He feels they are paid for catering and this should be their responsibility.

Recapping as we have functions at the clubhouse make sure to sort trash into the recycle bin. If you fill the recycle bin up ... Tie the bag up and move it to the outside balcony above the basement workshop and put in a new bag. Trash not Recycle may have to be shared out.. (you may have to take it home if you fill that can!) On the other hand, if you think about it... almost everything up at the clubhouse is recyclable trash.
Here are the answers to the Mystery problems from yesterday, hope you did well in answering the mystery. Let me know if you like entries like this or not in the below comments.

1. It was the Maid. She said she was getting the mail but there is no mail delivery on Sunday.

2. He shot his reflection in the bathroom mirror.

3. Frost forms inside of the window, not on the outside. So Mr. Fiend could not have wiped it off to discover Mr. Teddy's body.

"MYSTERIES TO WORK ON"

Study Carefully.....the clues are so blatant you will be kicking yourself if you miss them!

Mystery one
A man was found murdered Sunday morning. His wife immediately called the police. The police questioned the wife and staff and got these answers:

The wife said she was sleeping. The cook was preparing breakfast. The gardener was gathering vegetables. The maid was getting the mail. The butler was polishing shoes in the pantry.

The police instantly arrested the murderer. Who did it and how did they know?

Mystery two
A man walks into his bathroom and shoots himself right between the eyes using a real gun with real bullets.

He walks out alive, with no blood anywhere and no, he didn't miss and he wasn't Superman or any other crusader wearing a cape.

How did he do this?

Mystery three
Old Mr. Teddy was found dead in his study by Mr. Fiend. Mr. Fiend recounted his dismal discovery to the police: "I was walking by Mr. Teddy's house when I thought I would just pop in for a visit. I noticed his study light was on and I decided to peek in from the outside to see if he was in there. There was frost on the window, so I had to wipe it away to see inside. That is when I saw his body. So I kicked in the front door to confirm my suspicions of foul play. I called the police immediately afterward."

The officer immediately arrested Mr. Fiend for the murder of Mr. Teddy.

How did he know Mr. Fiend was lying?

Note: I will print the answers tomorrow, so you can see if you got them right.
