The universe is a pretty big space. It's bigger than anything anyone has ever dreamed of before. So, if it's just us, seems like an awful waste of space, right?

Cheap Gas in Mexico Lures U.S. Motorists : NPR: "With gas prices now topping $4 a gallon in much of the United States, some are taking advantage of cheap fuel across the border in Mexico. Big pickups with Texas plates are streaming across the border into Mexico to fill up with cheap gas."

On this Day: Japanese Submarine Attacks Oregon / findingDulcinea: "The Japanese were retaliating against America for the Doolittle Raid, a surprise attack by U.S. B-52 bombers on the Japanese mainland only months earlier. The American air raid caused minimal damage but humiliated Japan and bolstered U.S. confidence after Pearl Harbor and a string of U.S. defeats.

The Japanese high command sent submarines to the Pacific Northwest, ordering them to attack naval vessels headed to Alaska. On June 21, one of the subs navigated through a fishing fleet near the Oregon coast, avoiding U.S. minefields off the Columbia River, and then moved in to fire its 5.5-inch deck guns at Fort Stevens."

Study: MPG ratings misleading to average consumer - USATODAY.com

Study: MPG ratings misleading to average consumer - USATODAY.com: "So why does it help to look at gallons per mile instead?

Well, that tells you how much gasoline is used or saved over a given distance, say a year's driving of 10,000 miles.

Gillis calculated that at $4-a-gallon, over 10,000 miles, an improvement from 12 mpg to 13 mpg would save $256. For the owner of a 33 mpg car to save that much, mileage would have to go up to 40 mpg, he said.

Here's how it works.

A couple drives a 25 mpg sedan. They trade it for a 50 mpg hybrid, a 25 mpg improvement.

A family with mom, dad and three kids has a 10 mpg SUV to haul everyone around. They trade it for a 20 mpg station wagon, a 10 mpg improvement.

Sounds like the couple did better, at least in miles per gallon.

But lets look at gallons per miles.

At 25 mpg the couple burned 400 gallons over a year and their new 50 mpg hybrid cuts that to 200 gallons. They save 200 gallons.

At 10 mpg the family's SUV burns 1,000 gallons of gas a year. At 20 mpg the station wagon burns 500 gallons — they save 500 gallons, much better than the couple."

Expect More Droughts, Heavy Downpours, Excessive Heat, And Intense Hurricanes Due To Global Warming, NOAA: "The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change previously evaluated extreme weather and climate events on a global basis in this same context. However, there has not been a specific assessment across North America prior to this report.

The report is based on scientific evidence that a warming world will be accompanied by changes in the intensity, duration, frequency, and geographic extent of weather and climate extremes."

Climate Change To Spur Extreme Weather, Storms, Droughts And Floods Will Intensify With Global Warming, Gov't Report Says - CBS News: "Events that have seemed relatively rare will become commonplace, said the latest report from the U.S. Climate Change Science Program, a joint effort of more than a dozen government agencies.

There has been an increase in the frequency of heavy downpours, especially over northern states, and these are likely to continue in the future, Thomas R. Karl, director of the National Climatic Data Center, said in a briefing."

Large 'Planet X' may lurk beyond Pluto - USATODAY.com: "An icy, unknown world might lurk in the distant reaches of our solar system beyond the orbit of Pluto, according to a new computer model.

The hidden world — thought to be much bigger than Pluto based on the model — could explain unusual features of the Kuiper Belt, a region of space beyond Neptune littered with icy and rocky bodies."

This has political overtones

by ron thomas

Warning...

This has political overtones that will cause some of you great heartburn... This website strives to not be political... I'm violating that rule because I know about oil. I worked for Chevron for 14 years. I have friends that were devastated by ENRON losing great sums of retirement income. As I passed by the Chevron station in Newport and saw the ever changing upward spiral of a gallon of gas at $4.39 yesterday I was angered because of what I know.... and I think you should know too...

Most of you are in the same boat as I am... that is you're retired and on a fixed income... It cost me $67 to fill my gas tank a few days ago.. Last year it was really bad... around $28 to fill up. In Europe gas costs $7 plus a gallon. Some experts, that I have read, say that will be our fate around Christmas this year.

If you choose to listen... then listen real close to the recorded conversation between the two Enron executives...

I'm warning you that you will not like what you hear... So don't listen if you don't want to know what is going on. Or if you don't want to hear political stuff....

When Electric Cars Hit the Fast Lane - TIME

When Electric Cars Hit the Fast Lane - TIME: "Clearly that has changed, and young companies like GEM are taking advantage. GEM, which stands for Global Electric Motorcars, is a Fargo, North Dakota, subsidiary of Chrysler that's been selling small electric vehicles for a decade — or as GEM President Rick Kapser has said, 'back when gas was a $1.25 a gallon.' GEMs may look a bit like golf carts — and they may occasionally be used as golf carts as well — but they are real, street-legal vehicles, drivable on any road with a speed limit of 35 mph or less. Their success provides a good window into the growth of the electric car market — unlike Chrysler's other brands, GEM is profitable, selling about 37,000 cars over the past decade, ranging from $7,000 bare-bones 2-seaters to larger, more comfortable vehicles that can cost more than $12,000."

High cost of asphalt affects maintenance on area roads | StatesmanJournal.com | Statesman Journal: "A year ago, the going rate for hot mixed asphalt was $44 per ton. But the cost to the city now is about $50 per ton, and next month, it will be $56 per ton. Mass Extinctions Due to Sea Level Changes, Study Says

Mass Extinctions Due to Sea Level Changes, Study Says: "Since the beginning of life on Earth 3.5 billion years ago, scientists estimate there have been as many as 23 major extinction events.

During the past 540 million years, there have been 5 major mass extinctions, primarily of marine plants and animals. Each time, between 75 and 95 percent of all species vanished. (See a prehistoric time line.)

The idea that sea level changes are associated with these mass-extinction events has been around for almost 60 years, Peters noted, but until now scientists have been unable to quantify the environmental consequences of sea level change."

Oregon Coast Lodgings Offer Specials, Gas Cards

Oregon Coast Lodgings Offer Specials, Gas Cards: "Exactly how much high gas prices are affecting travel and tourism on the Oregon coast is a little up in the air as yet. It depends on whom you talk to you. Some are reporting drops in business; others are not. One big prediction is that those who normally take long drives through several states won’t be doing that this year, and instead be traveling to the coast. Seaside and Cannon Beach officials say they normally do well in such pinches on the travel budget because they’re close to the metropolitan area of Portland."
