High cost of asphalt affects maintenance on area roads | StatesmanJournal.com | Statesman Journal: "A year ago, the going rate for hot mixed asphalt was $44 per ton. But the cost to the city now is about $50 per ton, and next month, it will be $56 per ton. Salem uses 8,000 to 10,000 tons of asphalt for roadwork in a typical year, said Mike Gotterba, the city's public works spokesman."
