Photo in the News: See-Through Frog Bred in Japan: "September 28, 2007—For high school students everywhere, this revealing amphibian may be a cut above regular frogs. That's because the see-through frog does not require dissection to see its organs, blood vessels, and eggs. Masayuki Sumida, a professor at the Institute for Amphibian Biology at Japan's Hiroshima University, bred the frog to be a humane learning tool. 'You can watch organs of the same frog over its entire life, as you don't have to dissect it,' Sumida told the news agency Agence France-Presse. The scientist announced his research last week at an academic meeting."

Why Your Coffee Sucks (and How to Drink Great Coffee for a Fraction of What You're Paying Now) | LifeRemix Blog

Why Your Coffee Sucks (and How to Drink Great Coffee for a Fraction of What You're Paying Now) | LifeRemix Blog: "For more than a millenium now, people have been drinking coffee. You can hardly drive down a major street (in the US, anyway) without encountering one or more Starbucks establishments. For all of it's forms and varieties, it's one of the most-consumed beverages in the world. I'm sure many of you reading this are probably doing so with a hot cup of joe within arms' reach - which is what makes what I'm about to say all the more meaningful and pointed: Your coffee is, most likely, crap."

Giant Ocean Tubes Proposed as Global Warming Fix

Giant Ocean Tubes Proposed as Global Warming Fix: "Imagine an ocean full of giant pipes that pump up cold, nutrient-rich water from deep below, encouraging surface algae to bloom and suck carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. That's the controversial new vision of James Lovelock, the independent British scientist best known for proposing the Gaia hypothesis, and Chris Rapley, a space physicist and director of London's Science Museum. The pair claims that such climate engineering solutions may be the only way to hold global warming at bay given its current progress. (See a global warming interactive.) 'Global warming appears to be an irreversible process, and if we don't do anything then the world will just heat up to a stable, hot state,' Lovelock said. 'The stakes are now so high that we have to act.'"

BBC NEWS | UK | Switch off for traditional bulbs

BBC NEWS | UK | Switch off for traditional bulbs: "Plans to phase out the traditional lightbulb by 2011 have been announced by Environment Secretary Hilary Benn. Mr Benn told the Labour conference he wanted to see an end to the sale of 150-watt bulbs from next January. Less powerful traditional bulbs would be taken off the shelves in stages under the voluntary energy-saving scheme by 2011. Greenpeace said the move was 'long overdue' and would help the UK reduce its CO2 emissions."
