"OREGON COAST SWEET ADELEINES AT LVH'S"
(click on picture to enlarge, then arrow back)
Friday night at our Longview Hills Club House the Oregon Coast Sweet Adelines put on a casino night to help raise funds for their trip to San Francisco in September. They have been choosen to represent Oregon at a National Music Festival. Our local LVH's resident Frida Burke along with close to thirty other members put on a very fun evening, enjoyed by some of the local residents here at LVH's and other people from the area. We were entertained by their wonderful singing, great foods and just a very fun evening. We wish them the best of luck in raising the funds they need to make this trip and we can see now why they were choosen to respresent Oregon.

Blah-blah, blah-blah, blah-blah, blah.
Ever listen to someone who, long after you've spaced out, continues to blab on? What did you think of that person? Probably self-absorbed and interpersonally clueless. Being long winded is a sure route to career failure, and in fact, life failure.
Of course, no one thinks they talk too much; otherwise they wouldn't do it. But without realizing it, could you be one of those irritating people?"

Aging in Place
The financial challenge of retirement is to make one's money last while paying health care costs that inevitably increase with age. It is becoming clear that to meet that challenge, many older Americans will need to cash in their home equity. In a report last year, the National Council on Aging, a research and advocacy organization, made a compelling case for expanding the use of specialized loans known as reverse mortgages to help older people pay for the care they need to remain safely at home, even as they become frailer."

First Science - A Seed - by William Allingham: "A Seed
By William Allingham
See how a Seed, which Autumn flung down,
And through the Winter neglected lay,
Uncoils two little green leaves and two brown,
With tiny root taking hold on the clay
As, lifting and strengthening day by day,
It pushes red branchless, sprouts new leaves,
And cell after cell the Power in it weaves
Out of the storehouse of soil and clime,
To fashion a Tree in due course of time;
Tree with rough bark and boughs' expansion,
Where the Crow can build his mansion,
Or a Man, in some new May,
Lie under whispering leaves and say,
'Are the ills of one's life so very bad
When a Green Tree makes me deliciously glad?'
As I do now. But where shall I be
When this little Seed is a tall green Tree?

LET'S MAKE IT WORK........COMPUTER CLUB CLASS
Today at 1:00p.m. at the Longview Hills Club House it's time for our Computer Club Class. Just take an hour out of your life and come join in with other residents. You might be able to share how to's with others or might even learn something new. There are residents who have worked very hard to put this computer room together for ALL residents to use anytime you want, 24-7. So let's make good use out of this room. Thank You!

Donna Talarski and Jim Rose have both pointed out to me that I left off the For Sale (Bulletin Board Page) when we made the new Link City. Tonight we hope to work on that and get it up and running. It may work a bit differently but it will serve the same purpose.
THIS WEDNESDAY @ 1:00PM COMPUTER CLUB MEETS...
I am going to the computer club meeting this time out of respect for Diane Doyle's optimism that it will come back and be a fun enterprise at Longview Hills.
The attendance last week was down to 4 residents.... 1 of which left after a half hour... That does not seem like a viable turn out does it? We are left with questions of what's wrong? If you do come bring ideas. I would like to try to get this back on track.. Maybe we need the meeting at night? Maybe it needs to be right along with pinocle where one group is doing one thing and the others in the lab up to another?
Maybe it's a personality conflict? Whatever it is if there is an answer we would like to get to the bottom of it and see if we can't make this club fun for the community.

"SOCIAL CLUB SPECIAL GUEST"
At the Longview Hills Social club Meeting on Monday, April 17th we were visited by Newport's Mayor Bain, only planned to speak for about 15 minutes, but spoke for almost 40 minutes, took questions from the residents who attended. We were very pleased with his talk and the information he shared with us, we thank Mayor Bain to take time out of his busy schudule to visit us. After his departure we then had our regular Social Club Meeting and heard about many events occuring here on the hill. When we're young we take piano lessons, play sports, and create works of art. Then we get a job, and our varied interests get lost in the shuffle of commuting, paying bills, and caring for loved ones. But retirement can be the perfect time to rediscover the pleasures of pursuits abandoned earlier in life. 'During their later years, people often rekindle interest in activities that gave them pleasure in their youth,' says Judith Salerno, deputy director of the National Institute on Aging."

‘’FOOT NURSE…MAY 1ST.”
Please take time to read……………….
There is a sign up sheet at the Longview Hill's Club House bulletin board to sign up for the foot nurse that will be here on May 1st and if not enough people sign up to make this worth her trip to LVH's, then this could be her last trip. Those who have had her work on their feet speak very highly of the work she does. So if you have any kind of feet problems, she is the person to see, it's very reasonable in cost. Give her a try at least once and let's keep her coming up here to take care of our tired old feet on the hill. She is a Registered Nurse.......

COMMENTING ON CLUBHO
COMMENTING ON CLUBHOUSE CLEAN-UP
Behind the scenes... We now have a sparkling clean clubhouse. A lot of people wanted the clubhouse cleaned. Most felt it was the responsibility of park management to do it. Emotions were running a bit high. Many wanted someone else to take the complaint to park management and more or less demand that they turn to and get the job done.
How did the clubhouse get dirty? Who were the culprits that caused the problem? Let’s have a look at those questions.
I have noticed that after a period of time my home gets dirty from just living in it. I guess you might say the only ones we can blame for this is ourselves. So every Spring, just as the birds become ambitious at building their new homes, we start Spring cleaning ours.
Say, in the case of the clubhouse, have you noticed cake crumbs and icing being dropped on the floor and then being ground in by people walking on them? Who would do such a thing? Probably not many on purpose. Yet there are a few who will stand there and work those crumbs into the carpet with a shoe rather than stoop to pick them up. On the other hand as we get older our sight may start failing or our once supple bodies no longer bend so that we can stoop and do a simple cleanup. We actually may not know we have added to the problem.
In the kitchen we expect a clean environment but like all things with time and use it becomes dirty on a level that cannot be cured with the swipe of a towel. Management provides David to keep after the light cleaning duties every Sunday. He actually does that for the clubhouse putting in 4 to 6 hours weekly. Not only that but on his own initiative he washes the used coffee cups and puts them away and puts away all the stuff after a dinner the next day.. We felt the mop he is using in the kitchen and bathrooms was not doing the job and leaving the floors in sad shape. We told that to Larry.
We also asked if the rug in the clubhouse could be cleaned and he agreed that at some near date that he would hire that done. However, he pointed out in the past that it needs 24 hours to dry and residents not willing to wait will pass through barriers and, “NO SIGNS”, to do whatever it is they want to do, “Because nobody is going to tell them what to do!”. We hope to install a sense of embarrassment in those kind of folks with this article. Perhaps they will consider a day off for rug cleaning day? Especially, if those that appreciate a sparkling clean, clubhouse remind them.
The gist of the discussion with management is that the clubhouse is a mutually common ground for management and residents. It serves as an office for management and a great entertainment facility and post office for residents. We both have a stake in keeping it beautiful and clean. Management and residents have a difference of opinion as to what each other have to do. However, in this case we have seen an amicable compromise and all of us have benefited from it. Each group has a better understanding of the other and solved a problem without anger.
Where there is compromise, nobody is entirely happy with the results but both parties can live with the solution.
To those who rose above emotion and discussed a problem rather than demanded a solution, we salute you. To those who saw the wisdom of compromise and came together to deep clean the clubhouse, we admire your selflessness.
