Ok now I need advice and someone out there can give it to me. Our Garage door is full of dry rot and we are going to replace it.I've heard a story from Ruthanne that makes me want not to get the guy she had. Lee Watkins says there is a guy in Lincoln City and one ine Waldport... I'm looking in the phonebook now. I wish one of you had a recommendation on the U Rate It page.

This page has the potential to help you make good choices for the use of your money and makes available to you information that is not anywhere. But it is not worth the powder to blow it to____ if people do not participate.

The same folks that do a lot of the volunteer stuff here on the hill have put in a couple of recommendations. But I am looking for more... email me your good and bad recommendations... if you don't want your name used it won't be.

The way it works is if we get a positive recommendation it goes on the page with a star for each positive recommendation. For every bad recommendation a star is removed... No stars gets the business removed. Only those businesses with more good than bad said about them will be on the site after awhile. We need to build a base and get it going to make it work. Watch your home security form comes to an end...

Some folks think that the above form was a security risk rather than a benefit.

Here is what it did. A person filled out the form and clicked submit... when submitted it emailed all the block captians at LVH and then erased itself. There was never a list held on the computer like some of you thought. Only 3 or 4 people have ever used the form to tell that they were on vaction. I am one of them, Jim Rose and Ron Gibbs is another.

The form came from an idea presented by Ron Gibbs at the formation of the Neighborhood Watch in LVH a few years back.

There seems to have been a concern by someone who never contacted me that there was some sort of list kept on the internet that would tell when folks are away from home and that would be an easy thing for computer hackers to find and exploit. Balderdash! To this person I would say I would have been more than happy to explain how this form worked if you had only asked me instead of creating such a ridiculous scenario.

Now the form is gone.. deleted.

See the new icon on the left? The one on the top? It says RSS Newsgator? Well that is a new feature. If you get intrigued here is what it does.

When you sign up with Newsgator (for free of course) they give you a choice of hundreds of news sites that you can subscribe to for free. For instance, I subscribe to the New York Times opinion page, ZD net, BBC Headlines, USA Today Technology among others. They comprise my morning newspaper read.They also will put on the websites that you read if they have an RSS feed. So now we do!

Now Newsgator has it fixed so that when you read a section of your own personal news it marks it as read and doesn't bring it up again. It tells you when a new article has been added to any of your selections. It has the ability to save articles (called clippings) for you to keep for future reference. Also it has a link that will email a story to anyone that you want to.

I have only begun to learn how to do this but if it comes up at the next computer meeting we will yak about it.

FireFox Security Update..

Recently FireFox found it has a possible way for hackers to attack your computer. It was inevitable, So Firefox now has issued a fix for the problem until they can work out a download to stop the possible attack. This possible attack could compromise on line banking and credit card numbers that you use on the web. For this reason .. if you are using Firefox you need to take time right now to execute these simple steps for your protection. You can do everything right from here. We have copied the steps from the Firefox Security work around for you. Everything you have to do takes place from using the Menu Bar at the top of this page. The Menu bar is the one that says FILE EDIT VIEW GO BOOKMARKS...ETC at the very top of your browser.Here are the steps. I put in some extra help where we thought you might need it.

FIREFOX work around solution

The Mozilla Foundation has made changes to our update servers that will protect users from this arbitrary code execution exploit. Users who have added other extension or theme sites to the software installation whitelist should remove them until a fixed version of Firefox is available.

(to do this)

1. Select the "Options" dialog from the "Tools" menu
2. Select the "Web Features" icon
3. Click the "Allowed Sites"(the button is to the right of allowed sites) button on the same line as the "Allow web sites to install software" checkbox
4. Click the "Remove All Sites" button
5. Click "OK"

To prevent the script injection exploit from stealing cookies or other sensitive data disable Javascript before visiting untrustworthy sites. In Firefox:

1. Select the "Options" dialog from the "Tools" menu
2. Select the "Web Features" icon
3. Uncheck the "Enable Javascript" checkbox
4. Click "OK"

(we are just leaving java script off until they fix this problem.. But if you have a trusted site that looks all screwy when you look at it then you need to reverse the above proceedure for Java for that site only. Disable Java before leaving that site.)

** Trusted site means one that you know does not try to hack your computer. For instance the Social Security site or your bank site.

John.... the penalty for fishing here seems a bit steep don't you think?
