New Years Eve LVH

New Years Eve @ LVH

RT

Folks, at the Social Club Meeting there were some doubts as to whether we could have a Casino Night this year. The reason being that there does not appear to be enough volunteers to deal cards, monitor other games and repair the slots to keep the games going. Also, we are low on waite staff. There is not even enough volunteers to give a potty break to the helpers. Also the people helping do not get to participate. For these reasons a doubt was cast that we could run this event this year.

That being the case we have pulled the sign-up sheet for Casino Night and put in it’s place a poll. The poll offers a casino night if volunteers will come forward and a poker tournament choice and a board and card game chioce such as canasta, monopoly, Mexican Train or other games. One of these can be a New Years Eve activity. For those with other ideas ... there is even an “Other” column on the poll to put your choice in. The Poll is on the Bulletin Board at the clubhouse and on a clipboard below the bulletin board.

We really would like to have something but need to have input from you as to what you would like. We plan to collect the poll results next Saturday and decide then what to do.

DO YOU READ ALL THAT

DO YOU READ ALL THAT STUFF.... ?

RT

The Davi’s had us over for dessert on Thanksgiving and we enjoyed a variety of pies... uhmmm mmmm .

We ended up in the livingroom where we discussed a number of interesting topics from what was going on around the park to the Bird Flu in Asia. During the conversation Ben asked if I really read all those news items that you see published here on the website?

The answer is yes. I read that and more every morning with a cup of coffee and a purring kitty leaning against my leg. You may recall we had trouble with paper delivery last winter and that experience led me to try out a feature of the internet called RSS (really simple syndication). It took very little to set up and I started my transition to internet news and canceled my subscription to the newspaper. This led to a savings in dollars and a much more personalized news service for me.

Here is my morning routine.. Get out of bed stumble to the coffee pot and start it... fix hair, teeth and the like.... get coffee in cup... start the notebook computer at the dining room table.... Move another chair next to my leg (for the kitty).. Get on the internet..

!st stop the LVH website.. check the comments and that everybody has received their birthday greeting and the site is operating properly... Next up, the statistical site to check how many folks are reading all the web pages we have. That gives us a rough guess as to whether we are doing a good job or not and what people like. This site records and counts the number and geographical location of people who access the websites. You would be surprised at the numbers and that we are read from places all over the planet. Next we call up GOOGLE News.. This service robotically records the stories that people all over the world think are the most important so the editor is not human... The stories with the most worldwide interest are the ones that are picked. Also, Google allows you to set categories that you are personally interested in. My interests are tech, science and political ..generally. So it is personalized for my taste. The stories are all from news papers the world over and they tell you when the story was posted.. for instance the caption may say, “30 minutes ago”. Next stop the Houston Chronicle Funnies... They have over a hundred daily newspaper comic strips that you can download every day and they fix it so you personalized the ones you are interested in and from then on you are only a click away from your own personal daily funnies.

After the funnies we are warmed up and on our second cup of coffee and kitty is asleep.. it’s time for the more interesting stuff.. Click and I arrive at the NewsGator website which has been personalized for what I am interested in. This is an RSS feed service and it is of course free. When you set it up for yourself they list dozens of subjects that you scan and select that articles are written on daily, weekly monthly ..etc.. I look through my personalized list to see what’s going on today. I have several sites that I am using.. Sometimes I add a new one or discard one that isn’t a good fit for the information I want. So every time I visit this site it lines up the stories that have been written today and tells me how many in a synopsis. Then I click each source which then gives me a couple of lines and a headline about each pending story. Then we decide if the story is interesting or not... read it or ignore it. Then on to the next source and so on.... Here is a list of my personal sources:

  1. BBC News Front Page World Edition

  2. BBC News Science World Edition

  3. Crooks and Liars (political blog)

  4. del.icous.tag archeology (new discoveries in archeology blog)

  16. Top Ten Mother Earth News

  17. USA Today.com news top stories

  18. USA Today.com technical stories

  19. USA Today.com Washington top stories
Finally, the last stop on the reading list.. The Oregonian on line...

Now as I read a story that might have interest to our community I simply click, and hi-lite a few lines of the story then click “BLOG THIS”... a feature of our website. Those story lines and a link back to the story itself are immeadiately published on our website.. all done in seconds.

Here then is how we do it... Of course it is all magic but none of us need to understand how it’s done only that it’s very simple.. Would you like to learn how?

A couple of weeks ago, I began pulling apart the walls in the oldest part of the house, the mudroom and the laundry room. What I felt, as I worked, was a forensic hostility. The laundry room, for instance, had been built around the washer and dryer, making it impossible to replace them without taking the room apart. So I took the room apart. I found what appears to be the oldest beam in the house, dating, perhaps, back to the late 18th century. I found miles and miles of BX electrical cable. And I found the cold spots, which I am slowly plugging."

UPDATE ON FRONT GATE

UPDATE ON FRONT GATE AUTOMATION PROJECT....

RT

At the Social Club meeting Ingrid brought up that she had asked Larry Henson (Park Mgr) why the project to automate the front gate had been put on hold. He told her to his knowledge that it was my project and that I should contact him. I thought he had indicated there was a problem with insuring me to work on park property.

Yesterday Larry and I had that conversation. What we agreed on is he and I can work on the gate but projects in the clubhouse itself may require insurance. He said this is what he had said all along so I must have misunderstood him.

On to the Gate Project.. What is it? I’ve ordered the parts and have performed experiments at home to make the gate open automatically when you push a keychain remote similar to the one that locks and unlocks your car doors. This means you will not have to use the code box on the gate... Just push the button and up comes the gate. (Just so there is no misunderstanding like there was the Emergency red light project... I ordered this stuff on my own with my own $$ again. If it does not pan out, it’s on me not the Social Club.)

It may have some problems. We have to experiment a bit to iron them out. The signal from the keychain remote may not reach the antenna because the electrical equipment is in a metal box for instance. If that is solved then questions like how far in advance can the signal be transmitted to the gate? Will the signal register if it is sent from a vehicle with the windows rolled up? With any project there are hidden problems not thought of until the unit is field tested.

If everything goes well I will ask the Social Club to reimburse me for the parts.. under $50 (no labor) at this time. Then at some future date the Social club will be advised what the cost of a keychain remote is (wholesale price.. I make $0). The sale of the remotes to residents (retail) will be used as a fund raiser for the Social Club Treasury. The price will be less than $20 per unit and determined at a Social Club Meeting in the future. Return and repair policy will be decided by the Social Club at the same meeting.

No, you won’t need a keychain unit to get in the gate. You will always be able to code in the password numbers to get in just as you do now. The remote offering will not be mandatory nor will it be necessary. It is meant to be a new convenience only.

Thoughts on keeping

Thoughts on keeping a good deal....

RT (idea by Jacky Thomas)

As many know, Joy Newman has been the historian for Longview Hills since the beginning of the park. Her scrap books of the past are in the clubhouse for all to see and enjoy a trip of nostalgia.

Joy recently resigned as historian for our community because she says that she no longer recognizes many of our citizens because of the influx of new folks. That makes it difficult for her to know when a community member is being mentioned in the newspaper.

Here we have a very valuable person who has amassed a lot of history leaving a post not likely to be filled anytime soon.

But ! !!  Joy says she would not mind continuing to do the task it’s just that she does not recognize everybody anymore.... hmmmm....uhhhh. Are you thinking what we are thinking?

How about we all cut pictures and turn explanations of the clippings over to Joy via her mailbox in the clubhouse? Then she can continue being our historian. Me thinks we probably should have been doing that all along.

Also, if more people would take pictures at clubhouse functions and give them to Joy that would even make a better history we think.

You owe it to yourself, perhaps on some future rainy day, to sit with these scrap books and a cup of coffee and watch the story of Longview Hills unfold before your eyes. They are located atop the bookcases in the clubhouse.

If you've already read the backyard greenhouse article on page 80 of this issue, you know that one of the tools required to build the little 'sun shed' is a tubing roller. Now such a device—if purchased—could cost you several hundreds of dollars, because it's normally a motor-driven 'professionals only' machine.

A roller is used to shape lengths of standard conduit or electrical metallic tubing (EMT) into arcs (rather than merely to form a corner, as is the case with the far more common tube bender) for use in framing, toolmaking, and other kinds of fabrication. On several occasions MOTHER's shop crew has felt a sore need for one of the handy implements . . . so finally they just up and built their own 'North Carolina copy', which fills the bill perfectly!"

Corn salads — also known as mâches — are unusual salad crops because they are very cold hardy and grow best during the fall and winter. The nutty flavor suggests a hint of toasted peanuts or even tahini; some people detect a trace of walnuts or hazelnuts."

Subject: Fw: How to Survive an Earthquake - A Worthwhile Read

For all of you Washingtonians, Oregonians, and Californians.....

HOW TO SURVIVE AN EARTHQUAKE

This makes very interesting reading. It goes against everything you've
probably been told about how to survive an earthquake. In this time of
earthquakes, tsunamis, mud slides etc. .. read this ...it may save your
life. Then pass it along to anyone you would like to be alive after an
earthquake.

EXTRACT FROM DOUG COPP'S ARTICLE ON THE "TRIANGLE OF LIFE"

My name is Doug Copp. I am the Rescue Chief and Disaster Manager of the
American Rescue Team International (ARTI), the world's most experienced
rescue team. The information in this article will save lives in an earthquake.

I have crawled inside 875 collapsed buildings, worked with rescue teams
from 60 countries, founded rescue teams in several countries, and I am a
member of many rescue teams from many countries. I was the United Nations
expert in Disaster Mitigation for two years. I have worked at every major disaster
in the world since 1985, except for simultaneous disasters.

In 1996 we made a film that proved my survival methodology to be
correct. The Turkish Federal Government, City of Istanbul, University of
Istanbul, Case Productions and ARTI cooperated to film this practical, scientific test.

We collapsed a school and a home with 20 mannequins inside. Ten
mannequins did "duck and cover," and ten mannequins I used in my "triangle
of life" survival method. After the simulated earthquake collapse we crawled
through the rubble and entered the building to film and document the results.

The film, in which I practiced my survival techniques under directly
observable, scientific conditions, relevant to building collapse, showed
there would have been zero percent survival for those doing duck and
cover. There would likely have been 100 percent survivability for people
using my method of the "triangle of life."

This film has been seen by millions of viewers on television in Turkey and
the rest of Europe, and it was seen in the USA, Canada and Latin America on
the TV program Real TV.

The first building I ever crawled inside of was a school in Mexico City
during the 1985 earthquake. Every child was under their desk. Every
child was crushed to the thickness of their bones. They could have survived
by lying down next to their desks in the aisles. It was obscene,
unnecessary and I wondered why the children were not in the aisles. I didn't
at the time know that the children were told to hide under something.

Simply stated, when buildings collapse, the weight of the ceilings
falling upon the objects or furniture inside crushes these objects, leaving
a space or void next to them. This space is what I call the "triangle of
life". The larger the object, the stronger, and the less it will compact. The
less the object compacts, the larger the void, the greater the probability
that the person who is using this void for safety will not be injured. The
next time you watch collapsed buildings, on television, count the "triangles"
you see formed. They are everywhere. It is the most common shape, you will
see, in a collapsed building. They are everywhere.

TEN TIPS FOR EARTHQUAKE SAFETY

1) Most everyone who simply "ducks and covers" when buildings collapse
are crushed to death. People who get under objects, like desks or cars, are
crushed.

2) Cats, dogs and babies often naturally curl up in the fetal position.
You should too in an earthquake. It is a natural safety/survival instinct.
You can survive in a smaller void. Get next to an object, next to a sofa, next
to a large bulky object that will compress slightly but leave a void next to it.

3) Wooden buildings are the safest type of construction to be in during
an earthquake. Wood is flexible and moves with the force of the earthquake.
If the wooden building does collapse, large survival voids are created.

Also, the wooden building has less concentrated, crushing weight. Brick
buildings will break into individual bricks.

Bricks will cause many injuries but less squashed bodies than concrete
slabs.

4) If you are in bed during the night and an earthquake occurs, simply
roll off the bed. A safe void will exist round the bed. Hotels can achieve a
much greater survival rate in earthquakes, simply by posting a sign on the
back of the door of every room telling occupants to lie down on the floor,
next to the bottom of the bed during an earthquake.

5) If an earthquake happens and you cannot easily escape by getting out
the door or window, then lie down and curl up in the fetal position next to
a sofa, or large chair.

6) Most everyone who gets under a doorway when buildings collapse is
killed. How? If you stand under a doorway and the doorjamb falls forward or
backward you will be crushed by the ceiling above. If the door jam falls
sideways you will be cut in half by the doorway. In either case, you will
be killed!

7) Never go to the stairs. The stairs have a different "moment of
frequency" (they swing separately from the main part of the building). The
stairs and remainder of the building continuously bump into each other
until structural failure of the stairs takes place. The people who get on stairs
before they fail are chopped up by the stair treads - horribly mutilated. Even if the building doesn't collapse, stay away from the stairs. The stairs are a likely part
of the building to be damaged. Even if the stairs are not collapsed by the
earthquake, they may collapse later when overloaded by fleeing people. They should always be checked for safety, even when the rest of the building is not damaged.

8) Get Near the Outer Walls Of Buildings Or Outside Of Them If Possible
- It is much better to be near the outside of the building rather than the
interior. The farther inside you are from the outside perimeter of the
building the greater the probability that your escape route will be blocked.

9) People inside their vehicles are crushed when the road above falls in
an earthquake and crushes their vehicles; which is exactly what happened with
the slabs between the decks of the Nimitz Freeway. The victims of
the San Francisco earthquake all stayed inside of their vehicles. They
were all killed. They could have easily survived by getting out and sitting
or lying next to their vehicles. Everyone killed would have survived if
they had been able to get out of their cars and sit or lie next to them. All the crushed cars had voids 3 feet high next to them, except for the cars that
had columns fall directly across them.

10) I discovered, while crawling inside of collapsed newspaper offices
and other offices with a lot of paper, that paper does not compact. Large
voids are found surrounding stacks of paper

clarkhoward.com: Clarchives clarkhoward - Clarchives November 08, 2005: "USA insurers offering treatment in Mexico
Clark has talked in the past about medical tourism and the trend of traveling to other countries for cheaper medical procedures. People often travel to India or Thailand for surgeries that cost about three quarters of the cost in America. People who do this often have their own private nurse 24 hours a day and the care is impeccable. As a result, insurance companies in California are setting up Mexican HMOs. For non-emergency care, residents of southern California can go to Mexico to see a doctor. The plans cost about half what it costs in the States. Now, if you had to go to the hospital for an emergency, you go to your nearby hospital. But for everything else, a plan that normally costs $600 would cost $300. Blue Shield of California has one called “Access Baja,” for example. Clark is all for people going to Mexico or Thailand for medical care and to Canada for their prescriptions. Eventually, it will force American companies to reduce its medical costs, which would benefit many citizens and keep the business in our country."

Crooks have figured out that they can easily assume guardianship of aging people simply by telling a judge that they are no longer mentally stable. These people don't have to prove they are related, so they basically seek out elderly folks who are losing faculty and then go to court seeking guardianship. Family members have no idea that it's happening and have no recourse if it happens. Busy courts and judges don’t have time to make sure these crooks are above board, and there is no requirement to do so. So when the scamsters go to court seeking a ruling, it happens quickly and the victims don’t even know it happens. Clark doesn’t know how these people get leads on their victims. But it’s up to children of aging parents to look out for them and make sure they are not being victimized. It’s easy to steal the money and very hard to get it back. Several legal forms can protect them, as well. First is the “Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care,” which allows someone to handle your health care issues if you cannot speak or act on your own behalf. These are sometimes available for free. The other edict is a regular “Durable Power of Attorney,” which is a bit more difficult to get and requires the help of an attorney. It allows the appointed person to take care of someone’s finances, which would make it impossible for these crooks to step in and steal your parents’ assets. Having both of these in place is a great idea to ensure your parents are "

Update on The Red Li

Update on The Red Light Warning System...

RT

Over the years we have had some problems with the red lights and have now a pocket full of solutions. We are hoping that folks run a test on the light every once in awhile to see that it is in good order.

We will continue to repair the Emergency lights or order new parts should that become necessary (New parts will require you to purchase not the Social Club). However, we don’t fix your regular light. If time is available we will render an opinion on what can be done to repair a post light fixture.

90% of reported problems are caused by holding the pushbutton control to long. The switch was told at the factory to reset the code that is programmed into it if you do that. Once that code is reset the switch in the house no longer recognizes it and the light does not work.  Then we have to come out and reprogram your switch. All that is necessary is that you see the little red LED light on the pushbutton flicker. When it flickers the signal has been sent and you should release the pushbutton.  Still this has been difficult for some folks to remember so here is what we are going to do to eliminate this problem for them.

If we find that the pushbutton has reprogrammed itself we will program that person’s system to the code that the pushbutton always returns to if held to long. After that if held to long it won’t matter because the system will be set to the default code. This will eliminate most of the calls we have on the system. Also, if you are having vision problems the Transceiver in your home can be made to audibly click when you turn it on or off.

There is another problem that David Guhirer has pointed out to me. He is the guy that has been changing postlamp bulbs when you REQUEST IT. He has found that the red paint on some of the bulbs is flaking off due to the heat generated by the street light bulb. This may become a problem if you are using lamps that are greater than 40 watts.  For now I put it to you that if a light is flashing be it red, pink or even white you should consider that it is an emergency signal. I am thinking of asking David if he would mind lightly spraying a coat of red paint on the affected bulbs if we buy the paint or if we supply him with red bulbs he replace those that he deems necessary to replace and return the others to us for respraying.

Meanwhile, Ed Simon, and Toby Cole (Assistant Fire Chief) Sgt Dean of the Newport Police Department have made comments that we should think about lit numbering systems and emergency lights for all of Newport. I have a lot of good ideas for this and am contemplating others.

Also, Jim McCrea is getting a copy of this article via email in the hope that it will find its way to the Newsletter.

Update On The Bark S

Update On The Bark Stopper....

RT

Recently, a group of us went to see the Pointer Sisters at the Chinook Winds Casino. Before going there we all seven of us sat down to dinner. During the pre dinner conversation Kathy Furgason remarked to NancyLee Moore that whatever she had done to stop her dogs from barking had really worked good. She told Nancylee that the dogs had a high pitched bark that was easy to hear but she had not heard anything for quite awhile.

NancyLee, as you may recall, bought an X-10 (home automation) dog bark control. The unit has been on for several weeks and the animals have learned that when they bark they are rewarded with a high pitched tone that they find disagreeable. The tone is inaudible to humans. In effect the dogs have taught themselves good manners.

Here then, is a simple solution for folks in the neighborhood whose animals are bothering other neighbors without getting upset at one another. If a disagreement has gone so far that people are not talking over this kind of problem then either the owner of the dogs or the offended party can install one in their yard. It has a pretty good range of operation.
