The CERT team is looking for someone who can build us a rescue stretcher. Here is a rough concept of what it would look like. We are thinking free is a good price. If you would like to give it a try we would like to talk to you. email me at:

This 80 year old woman was arrested for shop lifting.
When she went before the judge in Cincinnati he asked her,
"What did you steal?" She replied, "A can of peaches."
The judge then asked her why she had stolen the can of peaches
and she replied that she was hungry. The judge then asked her
how many peaches were in the can. She replied six.
The judge then said, "I will then give you 6 days in jail."
Before the judge could actually pronounce the punishment, the
woman's husband spoke up and asked the judge if he could say
something. The judge said, "What is it?"
The husband said, "She also stole a can of peas."

Rich Rodriquez
We recently heard from an old friend who lives near Ventura, CA. He worked on the oil platforms with me for many years. He ran a crew as the Head Operator for years coaxing oil from deep inside Mother Earth to the surface.
Over the years he had begun to think of where he wanted to retire to and bought a plot of land in Mariposa, Ca. the gateway to Yosimite National Park. He has slowly built his dream home over the years but his wife Debbie had always wanted a very special kind of guest house. Here are pictures of her new guest house. We thought you might enjoy them as much as we did.
RESCUE RANDY GIVES WORK-OUT TO SENIORS
The CERT team ..
Met today to try and develop ways to move injured people that are Senior friendly. Recognizing that age brings physical limitations, the CERT team spent the morning revising what they had been taught in class to be user friendly in the field. Their goal was to find ways to move injured people without becoming injured themselves.
We found that the severely injured can be moved safely by a team of 5 to 7 people depending on the patients weight. The Fire Department's rescue dummy weighs in at 175 lbs of dead weight. More importantly the team got practical experience working together and now 5 of us know what works and what doesn't. In an emergency we won't waste time trying to find that out. We can adjust the size of our rescue teams to include 2 CERT members and 5 volunteers from the community. That will give us 3 to 4 teams with our present manning.
The most effective way of lifting was a blanket stretcher. 4 people lifting and one holding the head immobile was very easy. With heavier people we will use 6 lifting team members. Combining the blanket with an underlayment of a plastic tarp made dragging the patient across the floor really easy. We tried a piano dolly with plywood underneath the tarp then only one person was needed to move the patient.
This lead us to beleive that if we build a 6X3 piece of plywood with handholds and mount it on wheels we will have an excellent extraction tool. We further found it is easier to use an open bed ambulance rather than a van. We used the electric Rascal scooter and found it very easy to move patients on and off it and into and out of buildings.
One person came by and was making exscuses about why she couldn't help and we quickly pressed her into service holding Randy's head while we loaded him into the back of the truck.
You can be of help at some level.. everyone of you.
One of the most important issues is working together so that we have geled into a team. Some have left our team because of various issues that were important to them. We are sorry to have lost them but look forward to you folks that will be taking the CERT classes in September. Helping after the disaster is as valuable as silver but learning team work now in preparation for what is coming is gold. That is what is going to help our community more than anything else. We meet once a week at eleven AM on Wednesday. You need not be certified to come and train with us. We can show you what has to be done and we want to hear what you think.

"Who knew the drive on Highway 20 into Newport runs through the Renaissance?
On a grassy hillside, three-and-a-half miles east of Newport, now rests the Mona Lisa. It's appearance there during the weekend was for many a mystery. But for the man who created her, its genesis isn't bound up in some DaVinci Code.
'It's just something I've wanted to do for about 35 years,' said local artist Samuel Clemens, who was driven to create her at last by a need to balance his art, his responsibilities and a growing feeling that perhaps never the twain shall meet.
'Out of the frustration out of not being able to do my artwork,' because he had been working so much, 'I decided I could do this and make myself happy again,' he said. 'And maybe other people would like to look at it, too.'"

CERT Meeting Wednesday
11:00am at the clubhouse..We need helpers for this meeting!!!
11:00am at the clubhouse..We need helpers for this meeting!!!
Rescue Operations...
We have borrowed Rescue Andy from the Fire Dept. Andy weighs in at 175 lbs of dead weight. When we had our training we wrestled Andy a bit. I think all of us found Andy was a bit more than we thought we could handle. So we need to adapt. We are going to try more senior friendly ways of moving Andy.
We are going to need helpers .. those people that would show up at a disaster and want to know if they could help... You are the ones we want if you have a spare hour. Kibitizers will also be welcome.
We will try a blanket drag. Maybe office chair pushing, Someone, proposed using a dolly.. bring it. A mechanics creeper maybe. Got ideas? Material bring it. Anyone have a stretcher? Bring it.
Plastic tarp? bring it.
We need maybe some plywood.. I'll bring my truck and van and electric scooter, piano dolly and regular dolly I'll try to get an old blanket. How many will it take to move Andy? I don't know. But the idea is to move Andy so that no one gets strained muscles or joints. You can always move the dummy but what good is it if we hurt ourselves in the process and become part of the problem.
See you tommorow...

LA GRANDE -- Pat Matthews hoped to see a moose as he hiked along an overgrown old northeastern Oregon logging road recently.
He spotted none of the big, secretive animals, now estimated to number about 30, but the state wildlife biologist counted 118 piles of droppings. That got him thinking about how many moose really might be living in the northeast corner of the state."

Charles Burke is having health problems. In an email to me he said he would be withdrawing a lot from his work on the websites as he needs to lay low for awhile to help his health. He has so enjoyed putting pictures on the websites for this and the Fisherman's page as well as a constant barage of jokes on the Sr. Funnies.
You can see that we are going to miss his optimistic input and we are leaving him on to publish anything he feels like on his good days.
Taking up the slack, I will try to keep those pages up but this operation is pretty big these days and really needs more people that want to take up a non-serious hobby just for fun. It is pretty easy and I will give personal instruction to anyone carrying to give it a try.

HOME @ MIDNIGHT
What happened to the 11 1/2 hour trip? We were on the road at 7:30AM. What happened.. Life dealt us a joker. Just outside of Medford our van lost all electrical power.
Call to AAA they came out and towed us to Sears but wait! How can we all ride there. Especially Lori on wheels? (Wheel Chair). Well a couple of good samaritans stopped by when they saw us stranded with Lori's wheel chair hanging out the back of the van. One of them took Jacky and Lori to Sears. The cats stayed in the van with the windows down and in their carriers. After the tow I got everybody including the kitties inside Sears Automotive waiting room where it was nice and cool with air conditioning. There we all waited 4 hours for the car to be repaired. Though we are all heavy persons we came out of Sears $400 lighter and were on our way.
Not exactly a great day but a lot of great people and service men helped us and we were very lucky to find such nice people. I am sure glad it happened in Oregon.
Good to be home and as we pulled in I noticed the Breakfields are back from Alaska. Bet they felt the pull of their new home just as we do. I love Newport, Oregon.
