LA GRANDE -- Pat Matthews hoped to see a moose as he hiked along an overgrown old northeastern Oregon logging road recently.

He spotted none of the big, secretive animals, now estimated to number about 30, but the state wildlife biologist counted 118 piles of droppings. That got him thinking about how many moose really might be living in the northeast corner of the state."
