Active Social Life May Delay Memory Loss Among US Elderly Population

Active Social Life May Delay Memory Loss Among US Elderly Population: "One of the features of aging is memory loss, which can have devastating effects on the quality of life among older people. In a new study, Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) researchers found evidence that elderly people in the U.S. who have an active social life may have a slower rate of memory decline."

The Villages Daily Sun

The Villages Daily Sun: "Members of the Villages Amateur Radio Club were there to show how communications problems during power outages can be mitigated by the use of ham radios.

“When there’s an emergency and you lose power, you usually lose all phone service,” said Ed Crowell, secretary of the club and Village of Glenbrook resident. “Your cell phone service especially, because everyone gets on the phone. The subscriber can only hold 17 percent of its users at a time, so the cell phone tower shuts off its automatic cell phone switch. You need a radio to send a message over long distances.”

Crowell said the radios can last for years, and showed one he’s had for 10 years."

Officers were told that this driver had been headed south at speeds estimated between 65 and 70 miles per hour, passing other vehicles on the right. Boothe said seal pups are often found resting on shore while their mothers are hunting for food nearby. This is a normal occurrence and you must leave them alone. It's usually just a matter of time before the mother seal shows up to reclaim her young. They can be left alone for days at a time.

Like any baby, they just need to sleep a lot, and that’s all they’re doing. Well-meaning members of the public misinterpret the situation and try to “rescue” them by taking them away. But that’s the last thing they need."

Gas guzzlers are thinking twice: The Register-Guard, Eugene, Ore.

Gas guzzlers are thinking twice: The Register-Guard, Eugene, Ore.: "“We actually have seen an increase in people donating their larger cars, their V8s, their gas hogs,” he said. “We also find that less people are buying them. I have some beautiful, nice, bigger cars donated, but nobody wants to pay to feed them anymore, I guess.”

In recent weeks, St. Vincent has taken in at least four or five boats, and about the same number of RVs, Harvey said.

In January, it started charging $15 for home pick-ups."

Real national disaster is lack of preparation | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle

Real national disaster is lack of preparation | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle: "Even after Sept. 11, 2001, even after Hurricane Katrina, a Red Cross survey last year found that 93 percent of Americans aren't prepared for a major calamity — a natural disaster, a pandemic or a terrorist attack. This is troubling, because the more prepared a population is, the more effective the response to and recovery from a catastrophe will be.
