REPORT FROM THE FIELD...

Bob Dean has an innate curiosity and became the first in the neighborhood to buy a 6volt battery and pry it apart to see if there were really 32 AA batteries inside... Bob says there was only 4...

My comment is if you hooked 4..... 1 1/2volts batteries in parallel you would get 6volts output.. but not for long...

Bob also bought one of the emergency lights that we discussed in the articles below. Now days they are using LED (light emitting diodes) as lights. They have characteristics that need understanding ... They draw very little current and therefore last for hours and hours and virtually never burn out the bulbs. The light they put out is very weak, however. On the other hand many manufacturers are putting more than 1 LED in them these days at a higher price but the light intensity is vastly improved.

Bob's light cost him about $9... If you read this Bob, how about reviewing your new light for us and telling us about the battery in the comments.

Myanmar - Monks - Buddhism - Protests and Demostrations - Religion - Burma - New York Times

Myanmar - Monks - Buddhism - Protests and Demostrations - Religion - Burma - New York Times: "AS they marched through the streets of Myanmar’s cities last week leading the biggest antigovernment protests in two decades, some barefoot monks held their begging bowls before them. But instead of asking for their daily donations of food, they held the bowls upside down, the black lacquer surfaces reflecting the light."

Let's talk... About what you need to do right now for your safety.....

Last night around 9:30pm the power went off all over Lincoln County. The town was a black ink blot. My house was so dark I had to put my finger in my eye to see if my eyes were closed. Now that is dark!

Several people went on the LVH Radio network and shared their predicaments. One had an oxygen generator shut down. Another was bumping their way around the house trying to find where the flashlight was. This is not good... Still another remarked that is was scary. But we bet it was not as scary as having no one to talk to and being alone.

Now one person pointed out that they had their radio and flashlight by a favorite chair and had no problem. That is certainly a good idea. Maybe positioning several flashlights in places where we could find them easily would be a good idea.

Now there is a great piece of equipment that all you grandchildren and children can get for Grandpa and Grandma... It is an emergency light that plugs into the wall outlet and does nothing until the power is lost ... then the light turns on... It would be clever of you to buy them this as a present for Granny. Because, sure as God made little green apples, one of us elders is going to fall rooting around in the dark for a flashlight.... Falls to old folks are very serious as our bones are fragile and could lay us up for months being taken care of by you at your home... :)

Seriously, I will find out where these are for sale and get the data to you soon.

Now other problems you might not have considered what can happen with a power outage. For instance your automatic garage door will not open your garage door! What if you need to get the hospital? CERT people can show you how to do this. If you have a radio call for CERT help and someone will show up. Stuck not being able to see? Call for CERT on the radio and we will get someone to help.

In closing, there is no longer a need for it to be scary... Just pick up your radio and turn it on.. a whole village of folks and a CERT team are there for you.

To the readers of the LVH newsletter

From the LVH newsletter editor (Charles Curry) :

You will be wondering where your newsletter is. IT IS IN THE BOX ON THE TABLE NEXT TO YOUR LETTER BOX.

Why there? The Social Club Board has decided to cut the number of copies from 190 to 100. This is a cost cutting action based on the observation that there are always a number of copies still in the boxes at the end of the month. First come first served.

You will notice that the October issue is bare bones.

How come my favorite column has been dropped? That was a unilateral decision by myself , based upon some frustration, and definitely not well thought through. I believe that we have discussed unintended consequences before.

What next?

Following discussions with friends I believe that we can achieve the savings that the Board desires and still maintain the newsletter as it has been by:

Publishing only 100 hard copies

Putting the newsletter on the LVH Web. This something that Ron Thomas has been trying to get me to do for months.

By my holding more strictly to the length of stores published.

Look for in November

THE SAME GREAT WHIZ BANG TYPE OF NEWSLETTER YOU HAVE GROWN USED TO.
