Online buyers crack the code on deals - USATODAY.com: "Happily, consumers who shop online stand to benefit from websites that list coupon or promotion codes for the taking. At any time, up to 75% of online retailers offer a place to log in a discount code before checkout, experts estimate. Several sites — Currentcodes.com, RetailMeNot.com, CouponCabin.com and BradsDeals.com, among them — help make sure you seldom have to pay without adding a discount first, if one exists."

PHOTO IN THE NEWS: Flat-Faced Crawling Fish Discovered: "Discovered in Indonesia in January, the species has forward-looking eyes like a human and crawls rather than swims.

These and other traits suggest the fist-size animal may represent a new family of fishes, University of Washington fish expert Ted Pietsch announced on April 2, when this photo was released. DNA tests are needed for confirmation."

Assyrian clay tablet points to 'Sodom and Gomorrah' asteroid | The Register: "The 'Planisphere' tablet (see pic) - inscribed around 700 BC - was unearthed by Henry Layard in the remains of the library of the Assyrian royal palace at Nineveh, close to modern-day Mosul, Iraq. It's a copy of the night diary of a Sumerian astronomer containing drawings of constellations and 'known constellation names', but it required modern computer tech to finally unravel its exact meaning.

Alan Bond, Managing Director of Reaction Engines Ltd and Mark Hempsell, Senior Lecturer in Astronautics at Bristol University, subjected the Planisphere to a programme which 'can simulate trajectories and reconstruct the night sky thousands of years ago'. They discovered that it described 'events in the sky before dawn on the 29 June 3123 BC', with half of it noting 'planet positions and cloud cover, the same as any other night'.

The other half, however, records an object 'large enough for its shape to be noted even though it is still in space' and tracks its trajectory relative to the stars, which 'to an error better than one degree is consistent with an impact at Kfels'."

The World Link: Saving: A way of life

The World Link: Saving: A way of life: "Beginning with a quick history lesson, Morgan said the Coast Guard was created when the United States Revenue Cutter Service — founded by Alexander Hamilton, the first secretary of the Treasury of the United States — merged with the U.S. Lifesaving Service in 1915. The Cutter Service, also known as the Revenue-Marine, was created to bolster the new nation’s economy by enforcing tariff and other maritime laws.

Today, the Coast Guard — the smallest U.S. armed service and the only military branch in the Department of Homeland Security — is the principal federal agency responsible for maritime safety, security and stewardship, Morgan said.

Nationally, the Coast Guard oversees 95,000 miles of shoreline, working to protect the maritime public and the environment, maintain homeland security and manage and preserve national and economic resources."

On a lovely Jamacian afternoon, surrounded by surf and sand, our son, Rob, married his better half, Petrea, in a quiet and barefoot ceremony. The couple reside in Rancho Cucamonga, CA, where the newest Mrs. Thomas is a fifth-grade teacher and Roberto performs high-end computer voodoo for Honda's North America division. We're excited about their future together as a family with our grandkids, Kaitlin, age 9, and Ryan, age 6. --Ron & Jacky Thomas

Columnists - StatesmanJournal.com: "Burdene Claflin is hooked, and not just because her ball breaks noticeably to the left.

She has discovered a new favorite pastime at Hidden Lakes Retirement Residence: Wii bowling.

'This is really fun,' Claflin, 85, says. 'Now if we can just get the men to join in. You know what they say? 'I'm not going to get up there and make a fool out of myself in front of the women.' '

So for now, a group of gaming grandmas gather in the ballroom at the South Salem retirement facility, eager to give the wildly popular video-game system a try.

Wii, by Nintendo, is proving video games are no longer just child's play. Seniors are tossing aside their cards, picking up wireless controllers and having a blast.

'You're never too old to start,' says 90-year-old Lucy Hardenbrook. 'I enjoy it as much as the young ones, and I'm going to keep right on.'

Wii systems are all the rage at retirement communities and senior centers across the country. It's the new bridge or pinochle. Better than bingo."

Evidence Supports Earlier Date for People in North America - New York Times

Evidence Supports Earlier Date for People in North America - New York Times: "Exploring Paisley Caves in the Cascade Range of Oregon, archaeologists have found a scattering of human coprolites, or fossil feces. The specimens preserved 14,000-year-old human protein and DNA, which the discoverers said is the strongest evidence of the earliest people living in North America.

Other archaeologists agreed that the findings established more firmly than before the presence of people on the continent at least 1,000 years prior to the well-known Clovis people, previously thought to be the first Americans. Recent research at sites in Florida and Wisconsin also appears to support the earlier arrivals, and a campsite in Chile indicates migration deep into South America by 14,600 years ago."

ClarityLife mobile phone targets seniors - infoSync World

ClarityLife mobile phone targets seniors - infoSync World: "Clarity's new mobile phone for seniors will be available later this year, featuring a simple design as well as an emergency response feature.

Clarity today launched ClarityLife, a simple mobile phone that also serves as an emergency response device. ClarityLife is a mobile phone designed specifically for seniors and does not require a long-term contract. It features a large display with prominent buttons.

The cell phone amplifies incoming sound up to 20 db to help those with hearing loss, and is equipped with a one-touch emergency response button that will call and send text messages to five pre-programmed numbers. The button is located on the back of the phone, and a siren sound lets users know the emergency response feature has been activated. The mobile phone will then cycle through the five contacts until someone is reached."

CurryPilot.com: "More than 1,400 pounds of plastic bottles, tires, crab pots, rope, pieces of plastic foam and mattresses were collected by volunteers from the California border to Nesika Beach Saturday during the 2008 SOLV Great Oregon Spring Beach Cleanup.

The amount was about 200 pounds under what volunteer trash collectors bagged during the September beach cleanup last year.

'We had people come all the way from White City, Ashland, Grants Pass – as well as locals from the community,' Angela Stewart, park interpretive ranger for the Harris Beach Management Unit, said. 'We even had the Curry County Board of Realtors help, and one family with a dad and four sons cleaned all along Harris Beach.'"

Thanks to the late Keiko, everybody knows about the Oregon Coast Aquarium. However, according to a recent Newport News-Times article, the advertising firm is dividing the coast city into four districts - 'Deco' (the city center and Yaquina Bay Bridge areas), Nye Beach, the Bayfront and South Beach - in an attempt to present all of what Newport has to offer.

The goal is to capitalize on the city's maritime and science background while conveying the 'authentic' Newport experience.

Local News | Oregon's hunting and fishing license fees may go up | Seattle Times Newspaper: "MEDFORD, Ore. — The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife says it will hold a dozen public meetings throughout Oregon as it puts together a budget that calls for higher hunting and fishing license fees.

It says fees were last raised generally in 2004, and they make up a third of the department's budget, which totals $262 million for the current two-year period.

The Medford Mail Tribune reported that a combination hunting-fishing license would rise from $43.75 now to at least $50 and as much as $55 under the proposal the department is considering."

The Salem store at 183 High St. NE is expected to close on April 12.

In May, the jewelry, gifts, and apparel store will re-open at a location on the bay front in Newport.

Some of the items available at Bridie's Irish Faire include hand-woven scarves, table runners and place mats, hand-thrown pottery, hand-painted china, lino-cut printed linen, hand-knitted hats, handbags, handmade goats' milk soap, hand-blown crystal and sterling silver jewelry.

Lt. Dave Teem of the Newport Police Dept. wanted you to know about this...

FBI — House Stealing - Press Room - Headline Archives 03-25-08: "What do you get when you combine two popular rackets these days—identity theft and mortgage fraud? A totally new kind of crime: house stealing.

Here’s how it generally works:

… The con artists start by picking out a house to steal—say, YOURS.
… Next, they assume your identity—getting a hold of your name and personal information (easy enough to do off the Internet) and using that to create fake IDs, social security cards, etc.
… Then, they go to an office supply store and purchase forms that transfer property.
… After forging your signature and using the fake IDs, they file these deeds with the proper authorities, and lo and behold, your house is now THEIRS."

Crews will use Jules Verne like a store cupboard.

They will go into the pressurised vessel to obtain food, clothing and equipment when they need it. Fuel will be piped across to the main station complex; water will be carried out in bags; air will simply be vented from taps.
