The search for a fix starts with an admission of need, which the president has now acknowledged
Saturday, February 04, 2006

A ddicts seeking sobriety know that recovery is a long journey that begins with a single step. And that first step is to admit they are powerless over an addiction that has made their lives unmanageable.

President Bush took that step this week, using his State of the Union address to describe the nation as 'addicted to oil' and in need of recovery. The language, especially from this president, signals a break from some long-standing attitudes about the country's posture on petroleum consumption, imports and production."

Editorial: Take a lesson from Cleda...

RT

With the time fast approaching for new board members to be installed for our community we think it is time to look at what works and what does not.

I’m looking at Cleda Hampton here. Although she said on a number of occasions it was time for her to step down and take a well deserved rest.. nobody really listened. Then she did something remarkable. She went and found her own replacement to keep our library in good order... SHE FOUND HER OWN REPLACEMENT.

The way that we have been going about finding replacements is to have a nominating committee go out and try to convince someone in the community to take the job... This can be a really hard thing to do. First, you have to find a person just willing to consider taking the job. Not an easy thing at all. Many factors can influence prospective candidates to run for the hills when asked if they would like to take the job’

Top among their concerns is they have no idea what to do. Here is what I propose to you the community and to you the leaders who want to step down. Leaders (Board Members) you have seen people at the Social Club Meetings and functions that you know would be a good fit for your job. Hopefully, you know quite a few actually. Personally, invite these people to your Board Meetings. Let them know by attending a board meeting they are not obligated to serve (take the stress out of being asked). Let them get a feel for how the club works. Assure them that if they volunteer you will stay with them for a couple of months after the transition to help them along just like Cleda did.

People can be nominated from this group or any other way as far  as that goes.

WASHINGTON, Feb. 2 — President Bush supports the development of ethanol, wind power and other forms of renewable energy. So does Congress. But their goals differ in ways that compete for research dollars and are costing some government researchers their jobs.

About one research dollar in every five appropriated by Congress for the development of renewable energy sources is for a specific project inserted directly into the budget on behalf of a member of the House or Senate, and directed to a contractor or a university in the lawmaker's state or district. When ordered to pay for such pet projects, known as earmarks, the Energy Department reduces spending on similar projects at its own laboratories."

GUN lobbyists like to repeat the quote often attributed to American writer Robert Heinlein, that 'an armed society is a polite society'. But this is certainly not true for motorists.

A survey of 2400 drivers carried out by David Hemenway and his colleagues at the Harvard School of Public Health shows that motorists who carry guns in their cars are far more likely to indulge in road rage - driving aggressively or making obscene gestures - than motorists without guns. Some 23 per cent of gun-toting drivers admitted making rude signs, compared with 16 per cent of those who did not carry guns (Accident Analysis and Prevention,"

NOAA Ocean Explorer: Davidson Seamount 2006: "Davidson Seamount: Exploring Ancient Coral Gardens

January 26 - February 4, 2006

Most people think that corals are found in warm water and that mountains are only on land. In 2002, we were able to use new technologies to explore the cold waters, 4,100 to 12,000 feet deep (1250 to 3660 meters), off the Central California coastline. Our destination, the Davidson Seamount, was covered with spectacular organisms, including large and ancient coral gardens. We found that the corals are mostly located on seamount ridges, and that we still have much to learn about the taxonomy (scientific names) of these species. We are now returning to Davidson Seamount, still 99.98% unexplored, to test a model we developed that predicts where corals will be found. We will then take measurements of water currents and food available to understand what causes corals to thrive in some areas, but not others. Along the way, we will photograph and collect corals to determine if they are new species and to determine their age and growth patterns. The BBC will be filming during the cruise so you can join in on the fascination of deep-sea life on an upcoming broadcast of Planet Earth."

Each year, on 2 February, North Americans rouse the groundhog from hibernation for clues about how long winter will last. Legend has it that if Punxsutawney Phil – the celebrated groundhog of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania – sees his shadow (because of clear skies), there will be six more weeks of winter, rather than an early spring.

How groundhogs and other animals go into hibernation in the first place is not fully understood, but now researchers have identified a biological pathway that allows mice to enter dormancy."

Some facts about Groundhog Day
WHO IS PHIL?: Punxsutawney Phil has been making weather prognostications every Feb. 2 in Punxsutawney, Pa., since 1886.
THE ORIGINS: Groundhog Day grew out of what had essentially been a German superstition. German settlers brought with them the idea that if a hibernating animal casts a shadow Feb. 2 -- the Christian holiday of Candlemas -- winter will last another six weeks. If no shadow is seen, legend says spring will come early.
WHERE IT HAPPENS: Punxsutawney is a town of about 6,100 people located about 65 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.

WASHINGTON — The Republican-controlled House of Representatives on Tuesday sent President Bush the first broad cuts in politically sensitive benefit programs to pass Congress since 1997, but the 216-214 vote showed how hard it will be to cut projected spending much further this year.

The measure, which reduces the growth in spending for popular entitlement programs such as student aid, Medicaid, Medicare and child welfare, passed with only Republican votes. Thirteen Republicans joined Democrats and one independent in opposition."

Archaeologists exploring a windy bluff on the southern Oregon coast have found evidence of people in the area about 10,000 years ago, making it the second oldest such site on the state's shoreline.

Remnants of a stone hearth, chunks of charcoal and stone flakes were discovered in the small excavation in the Bandon State Natural Area just south of Bandon."

E-mail worm bent only on destruction
By Byron Acohido and Jon Swartz, USA TODAY
SEATTLE — A fast-spreading e-mail worm is raising alarms because its sole purpose is to obliterate the everyday working documents widely used by consumers, students and businesses.

The Kama Sutra worm — also referred to as Nyxem.E and Grew.A — is unnerving because, unlike other e-mail worms, it appears to be detached from any profit motive.

It is designed to destroy all Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint documents and Adobe Acrobat and Photoshop files on all hard drives connected to an infected PC.

'The amazing part is that there appears to be a lack of any motive behind this except destruction,' says David Mayer, researcher at e-mail security firm IronPort Systems.

The worm appears in e-mail in-boxes with subject lines such as 'hot movie,' 'A Great Video' or 'Crazy illegal Sex!' enticing the recipient to click on an attachment. One variation makes reference to the ancient Sanskrit book on sexual positions."

The Return of the Brandy Bar

The Return of the Brandy Bar: "The Return of the Brandy Bar
Houseboat living an economical, pleasant alternative to the terrestrial treadmill.
By Richard Trachi

DURING THE SUMMER OF 1850, the American schooner Sam'I Roberts ran aground on a bar in the Umpqua River along the southern Oregon coast. While waiting for a high tide to refloat the ship, the crew broke into the captain's liquor locker to help pass the time. Thus, the bar appropriately became known as Brandy Bar. A century later, Brandy Bar became mobile when the name appeared on a towboat built for the Umpqua Navigation Company and used to work the waters of the Umpqua River."

The Rope Rug

The Rope Rug: "When it comes to attractive, foot-warming floor coverings, you just can't beat an old-fashioned Colonial-style throw rug. 'Especially,' says MOTHER staffer Travis Brock, 'one that you've made yourself—for pennies—from recycled rags!'

Two months ago—as 'The Incredible Rope-Making Machine' (MOTHER NO. 42, pages 36—37) was being written—MOTHER researchers Travis Brock and Dennis Burkholder came up with a right smart (we thought) idea: 'Why not use the rope-maker,' they suggested, 'to twist ordinary rags into 'fabric ropes' that a person can—in turn—make into a Colonial-type oval rug?'"

People spend hours on the Internet are often thought of as being unsocial but a new study says that the Internet can provide a 'social glue' for people. A BBC article reporting on the PEW study called The Strength of Internet Ties says the study found Americans often use the Internet for help with illness, careers and financial advice.

'When you need help these days, you don't need a bugle to call the cavalry, you need a big buddy list,' said John Horrigan, associate director for research at the Pew Internet Project.

FOXSports.com - NFL- Here are X random thoughts for Super Bowl XL:

Let's face it, the Roman numerals may be XL, but Steelers-Seahawks isn't exactly a huge matchup of historical proportions.
One team hasn't won a championship in 26 years, and the other has never even played for one. About the strongest connection between the two teams is the sad sight of Steelers Hall of Famer Franco Harris staggering to the finish line of his career in a Seahawks uniform.
With the lack of history and, more importantly, enmity between these two teams, we search high and low for storylines, factoids and keys to victory in the big game."

Were Back home from

We’re Back home from Salem....

Salem was wet of course and the rivers were at or close to flood stage... (for newly arrived Californians that means the water was right up to the banks). Trees were down but the crews who I never see took care of them (sawed ‘em up). Whoever you are you are the best and thank you.

Nothing compared to the outright ferocity of these storms though as when you near Newport. Here on the Hill facing the brunt of them we can safely say that Windmill dr. is certainly a well deserved name. These homes are missing a big advertisement gimmick by not filming here and showing what these homes stand up to.

I have one red light problem to tend to when it lets up a bit and that is the one on Deer Lane that has been coming on by itself now ever since the new lady moved in there. Puzzling because we have changed out every part in her system and changed the frequencies that the device operates on and yet it still comes on. Afraid we have run into a problem that is very difficult here.

Meanwhile, the clubhouse has acquired 2 more revamped computers from Jim Dodd’s reconditioning clinic. That is probably all that can be salvaged. We plan to stand before the Social Club and ask them to pay for a monthly hi-speed internet connection at the next meeting. It should be about $44 a month and will allow all the computers in the clubhouse to be hooked to the internet as well as any laptops that have WiFi technology that are brought to the clubhouse by residents. If you have an opinion on that please come and vote. This will be the completion of the computer lab project and will allow us to teach all the any fascetts of the computer.

More later.. Have to catch up all the web pages.

Subject:The Mommy Test

I was out walking with my 4 year old daughter. She picked up something off
the ground and started to put it in her mouth. I took the item away from her
and I asked her not to do that.
"Why?" my daughter asked.

"Because it's been laying outside, you don't know where it's been, it's
dirty and probably has germs" I replied.
At this point, my daughter looked at me with total admiration and asked,
"Wow! How do you know all this
stuff?"
"Uh," .I was thinking quickly, "All moms know this stuff. It's on the Mommy
Test. You have to know it, or they don't let you be a Mommy."
We walked along in silence for 2 or 3 minutes, but she was evidently
pondering this new information.

"OH...I get it!" she beamed, "So if you don't pass the test, you have to be
the daddy."
"Exactly" I replied back with a big smile on my face and joy in my heart.

We know exactly where one cow with
Mad-cow-disease is located among the millions and millions of cows in
America but we haven't got a clue as to where thousands of illegal
immigrants and terrorists are located. Maybe we should put the Department
of Agriculture in charge of immigration!

An attempt to make the longest aircraft flight in history could begin as early as the middle of next week at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, US.

Pilot Steve Fossett, holder of numerous aviation records, hopes to pilot the Virgin GlobalFlyer solo jet aircraft around the world and then across the Atlantic a second time, ending the journey in Kent, England, about 80 hours later."

Chinese New Year din

Chinese New Year dinner ….

A success. Many choices and good fellowship shared at the clubhouse. Thanks go to the decorating, set-up and clean-up crews. It takes a lot of behind the scenes action to make these things happen. That is one reason folks turn over the Social Club leadership after a term or two. The current leadership is on its second term and want a break from the intensive time it takes to keep our programs active.

Thanks to all of you wonderful volunteers and to those of you that might like to play a larger role in the Social Club.. Soon we will be asking for your help. Many of the older volunteers will probably keep their hands in as volunteers but we need new leaders… Hey! It’s a good time and you get to meet our community and become on a first name basis with everyone.
I promise you will like it.

No denying it, Kobe Bryant's 81 points were impressive (though the 61st and 62nd were, we think, pretty lame). Simply having the strength to jack up that many shots in that short a time frame was an exemplary effort.
But let's not get carried away. Anything that happens in January against the Toronto Raptors is not -- we repeat, NOT! -- the greatest moment in the history of the NBA. "

RYAN WHITE
Did you know that as soon as you drive across 8 Mile Road, entering the city of Detroit, your car catches on fire?
It's true. Every car in the city of Detroit gets burned to a crisp and this has gone on every day since the Detroit Tigers won the World Series in 1984"

The Portland Trail Blazers' biggest victory in the first half of the season never showed up in the standings.
And the victory wasn't over an opponent, but rather themselves. "
