There's a strange phenomenon going on at Newport's Agate Beach.

For the first time in a decade, it actually is peppered with agates, the hard, semiprecious stones.

'Prior to this year's storms, the beach was covered with sand, and the agates were all under the sand,' said Danielle Emerick, who manages Starfish Point condominiums at Agate Beach. 'There was no rock exposed. This year, they seem to be re-exposing themselves.'"
