Carving out a new hobby | StatesmanJournal.com | Statesman Journal: "Now, two years later, the retired businessman and former state senator has carved and painted 40 lifelike carvings — most of which have found their way into the hands of family, friends and favorite charities.

'Photography used to be my hobby, but I collected way too many pictures,' Derfler said. 'I wanted to find something to make that I could give away as I made it.'

Derfler starts each project by leafing through a well-worn true-to-life illustrated volume of 'Trout and Salmon of the World' looking for a photo of a fish he wants to replicate."
