An analysis of residential burglaries in 2006 shows that Salem's Neighborhood Watch program is effective in deterring break-ins, police said.
Last year, 3 percent of residential burglaries -- 23 of 701 incidents -- occurred in homes participating in Neighborhood Watch, said ngela Mara Hedrick, a program coordinator with the Salem police Crime Prevention Unit.
Julia Allison, a volunteer Neighborhood Watch coordinator for the Faye Wright area, said that when burglars know homeowners are organized and watching for each other, they steer clear."
