The coming Neighborhood Watch Channel Change

(Having our cake and eating it too!)

Why change? Passerby’s, conversations, children playing with the radio as if it were a toy, profanity, etc. This interferes with the good nature of those that will listen to the radio for the community’s sake.

Wayne and Liz Hill and I recently preformed some experiments with our FRS radios and we were surprised to find out how the privacy channels actually work.. Hope this doesn’t get to confusing. If it does use the “comments” to ask questions. We found those with the radios that do not have privacy channels are still going to be able to receive announcements!

How it works.....

  • When you tune your radio to FRS Ch 6 _privacy__ code 16.....

  • You will not hear anybody that transmits on any other FRS CH 6 code but CH6 code 16.

  • However! When you transmit on CH16.6 you will be heard on CH6 and on Ch 16.6. That means the older radios will still hear everything.

What this means is that if you have a radio that has only CH6 but no privacy code capability ... You will hear all Neighborhood and CERT announcements on your radio but you will not be heard if you call on Ch6. For those folks.... You will have to call a block Captain during normal times if you want to know something but during emergency conditions.. CERT will tune a spare radio to CH6 only and listen for your calls.
