Every time she sent mail to the friend it would go to the friend's junk mail folder and be trashed and the amigo would not get the email. Trojan.Satiloler.B is a Trojan horse that attempts to steal user names, passwords, and other information from the compromised computer. It also attempts to open a proxy server on a random TCP port.
It has been reported that the Trojan is downloaded by malformed WMF files that utilize the Microsoft Windows Graphics Rendering Engine WMF Format Unspecified Code Execution Vulnerability (as described in BID 16074).
The list of exploits being written for this issue with the WMF flaw is now being reported at over 200 per hour. All major AV companies are pushing out AV definitions as they become available and we are recommending end users update each time BEFORE entering the mainstream internet. We are recommending at this time IT Administrators do hourly AV updates. Wide spread reports of servers being infected are now being reported in 37 countries. Ilfak Guilfanov's HOTFIX has been published to our website at www.myuplink.net/hotfix , we are recommending users of Windows2k and above including servers, install this HOTFIX as soon as possible. There is no workaround available for Window 3.1 - Windows 98 - Windows 98 SE or Windows ME and one is not expected. To help some what on the email side of this flaw we are recommending disableing HTML in your email software and that you unplug your internet connection before opening any email once it has been received.

A restaurant observation and a Hotel Recommendation
During our trip to California I noticed a new practice at restaurants. Most of the time when they give you the menu they ask you what you would like to drink and a lot of the time we say, “Coffee, please”. The coffee comes almost immediately. Since you haven’t looked at the menu you are surprised to see that a cup of coffee is often more than a dollar. However, at IHOP in California they charged a dollar for the first cup and a dollar for every refill. Imagine your surprise when you get your bill.
We saw stuff like this a lot of the time. However, when we stayed with Donna Davi and daughter Lisa at the Oxford Suites in Redding we had a sensational deal. We rented a 2 bedroom suite with a living room, a TV in every room. Doors in every room, 2 air conditioners that worked., a coffee maker, refrigerator, microwave, couch, 2 chairs all for $123 for a night for which we split the bill. In addition there was free 24 hour coffee (and it was top notch coffee) in the dining area, Wifi for the computer hook up and the use of a computer if you didn’t have one. At 5:30 pm there were hot hor’derves and free drinks I had a couple of draft beers (Bud Lite). The hor’derves consisted of hot meatballs, several dips and finger foods. We all ate so much that dinner wasn’t necessary. In the morning there was a hot breakfast of sausages, eggs, fruit cocktail, hash browns, assorted juices, fruit, muffins, toast and oatmeal. Definitely not one of those el cheapo continental thingys. My suggestion.. travel with friends and get a suite at the best hotels.. It is incredibly cheaper by far and a heck of a lot nicer. And they had check out at 12:00pm for late sleepers. The desk people were very nice also.

AS you know we were given 10 Pentium 3 computers and a server by the Georgia Pacific Corporation in Toledo in December. This was due to the efforts of Donna Talarski who works there and to the older community members who had the foresight to get us a non-profit organization status with the IRS years ago. Georgia Pacific Corp needed that number so they could claim their generous gift on their taxes.
During the wait for these computers other residents have donated their older computers to the clubhouse so that they would be available for those who wanted to use them. Each of them had different systems on them as pointed out by Bill Holt which made it nearly impossible to use them to teach classes. Our new donated computers all have the same operating system which should lend itself to easier teaching.
Ben Davi agreed to send a letter of appreciation to the Georgia Pacific Corporation for their gift to the Seniors of Longview Hills. Other thanks needs to go to Bill Furgason who helped pick up the computers, and two others who we won’t mention at this time who offered to store and are storing the units at their homes.
Now that we have these computers it is time to talk about the computer club again. There are those that have the expertise we need to set in motion the building of a computer lab for teaching, games, surfing and many other related activities. Think of this a productive hobby that will help our community. All levels of skill can be utilized. Those who have attained guru status can help and direct others during the process. Those with little knowledge will gain and those with a lot will have fun setting up the lab.
The first step will be to take each computer and determine what it has and if it will work. Next, we will need to have a give away of the computers that are presently in the clubhouse to make room for the new ones.
Then we will need to build the lab and make it neat. Larry Henson says the room is sometimes being used as a dumping ground for old equipment. That practice will have to stop.
What is a server? Well a server is usually a computer with a large hard drive that has a unique capacity to serve all computers it is attached to. What this means is that we can load programs onto the server and all the computers attached to it can then utilize those programs. This is cheaper than buying programs for every computer. We don’t know what programs the server has on it now... So there is another discovery opportunity. The server also can use hardware such as a printer or a fax machine and share it with every computer hooked to it.
A great idea would be to get Donna Talarski to ask one of her IT tech people if they would be willing to help us set up the units as they were at GP or if we could just call them for help and questions.
The task for me is a bit large and over my head but I have learned to take things one step at a time and that usually leads to success. I’m hoping you will talk to your neighbor about helping out and for the newly retired, you have just left computers in your jobs and know a lot.. We can use your help.

PROTECT YOURSELF FROM AN 'EXTREMELY CRITICAL' WINDOWS FLAW

Code that exploits a hole in Windows XP is circulating on the Internet.
Security companies are calling the flaw extremely critical.
The vulnerability involves the way Windows handles image files. A
malicious Windows Metafile (.WMF) image could allow attackers to take
control of your computer. The file extension may be changed to .JPG,
.GIF, .PNG or .TIF. The problem is particularly serious because
pictures load automatically in Web browsers.
Microsoft is investigating the flaw and has not issued a fix. You
should keep security software updated. Also, don't open files from
unknown or untrusted sources.
The only known way to protect your computer is to disable a .DLL file
that is needed to run the malicious code. Click Start>>Run. At the
prompt, enter regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll and click OK twice.
That disables the Microsoft Picture and Fax Viewer. Most people use
that to open pictures. So, to open a picture file, right-click it and
select Open With. Pick another program to open pictures. Among those
that will work are Paint, your Web browser and Windows Media Player.
Eventually, Microsoft will issue a fix for this flaw. When that
happens, you should re-register the .DLL. To do that, click Start>>Run.

House Fires-PLEASE READ

Received from a friend who is in the property
insurance business. It is well worth reading. This is
one of those emails that if you didn't send it, rest
assured someone on your list will suffer for not
reading it. The original message was written by a lady
whose brother and his wife learned a hard lesson this
past week.
Their house burned down.. . nothing left but ashes.
They have good insurance so the house will be replaced
and most of the contents. That is the good news.
However, they were sick when they found out the cause
of the fire. The insurance investigator sifted through
the ashes for several hours. He had the cause of the
fire traced to the master bathroom. He asked her
sister-in-law what she had plugged in the bathroom.
She listed the normal things....curling iron, blow
dryer. He kept saying to her, "No, this would be
something that would disintegrate at high
temperatures." Then her sister-in-law remembered she
had a Glade Plug-In, in the bathroom.
The investigator had one of those "Aha" moments. He
said that was the cause of the fire. He said he has
seen more house fires started with the plug-in type
room fresheners than anything else. He said the
plastic they are made from is THIN plastic. He also
said that in every case there was nothing left to
prove that it even existed.
When the investigator looked in the wall plug, the two
prongs left from the plug-in were still in there. Her sister-in-law had one
of the plug-ins that had a small night light built in it. She said she had
noticed that the light would dim and then finally go out. She would walk in
to the bathroom a few hours later, and the light would be back on again.
The investigator said that the unit was getting too hot, and would dim and
go out rather than just blow the light bulb. Once it cooled down it would
come back on.
That is a warning sign . The investigator said he
personally wouldn't have any type of! ! plug in fragrance
device anywhere in his house. He has seen too many
places that have been burned down due to them.

temperatures." Then her sister-in-law remembered she
had a Glade Plug-In, in the bathroom.
The investigator had one of those "Aha" moments. He
said that was the cause of the fire. He said he has
seen more house fires started with the plug-in type
room fresheners than anything else. He said the
plastic they are made from is THIN plastic. He also
said that in every case there was nothing left to
prove that it even existed.
When the investigator looked in the wall plug, the two
prongs left from the plug-in were still in there. Her sister-in-law had one
of the plug-ins that had a small night light built in it. She said she had
noticed that the light would dim and then finally go out. She would walk in
to the bathroom a few hours later, and the light would be back on again.
The investigator said that the unit was getting too hot, and would dim and
go out rather than just blow the light bulb. Once it cooled down it would
come back on.
That is a warning sign . The investigator said he
personally wouldn't have any type of! ! plug in fragrance
device anywhere in his house. He has seen too many
places that have been burned down due to them.

Lighthouse at Yaquina Head will receive paint job this coming summer to return the structure to its original colors, Joe Ashor, manager of the Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area, told the Newport City Council this week."Over the last several years we've had an assessment of the lighthouse and the lens on top," Ashor told the council Monday, "and the assessment is: the lighthouse is in good condition, but it looks pretty shabby."
The 132-year old lighthouse and associated oil-house will go from their present red, white and green to black, white and gray.The top, now red, will be painted black. The tower will remain white, and the walls on the adjacent oil-house will stay white too. But the window trim on the oil-house, now spruce green, will be painted "lead gray," he said.Ashor called the change in coloring "a controversial decision," but said that once completed, "it'll look close to the way it was built."The structure has gone through color changes in the past he noted, and the intent now is to return it to its original historical colors. The BLM took a survey of visitors to the Yaquina Head Visitors Center and, he said, "found 80 percent of the comments favored the historic color. The change had less support from people (living) in the county," he said. "They were 60 percent in favor of returning it" to its original colors. But either way, he noted, that gave a clear majority in favor of the change.The Frenel lens inside the top of the lighthouse will not be replaced, but will be refurbished, he said, "for the first time in 132 years, "and then we'll put it back in as a Coast Guard-managed aid to navigation."The Bureau of Land Management, which manages the lighthouse and the Outstanding Natural Area, received a specific appropriation from Congress, as part of the BLM budget, to let out a contract for major refurbishment of the lighthouse. That work, he said, will involve a new paint job and reconditioning of the entire lighthouse, from top to bottom. WE’RE HOME!
Today the little convoy made it over the top of mountains… with no problems whatsoever. We were surprised to see blue skies once entering Oregon.
Though there was some evidence of flooding there was nothing like what we saw in California. In the parking lot Donna met a family that came over from Eureka that lives there.. They came to escape. The father said he heard a loud pounding on his home and went out to investigate. They live adjacent to the forest and what he saw was a swath about 200 yards wide by a ¼ mile long in which every tree blew down. He packed his family up and left coming to Redding..
This was an excellent training lesson for me. As you know there is book learning and there is life experience. Of the two life experience is far more memorable. Some of the things I learned are:
- If you lose electricity… You lose:
- All gas stations. What’s in your car’s tank is what you’ve got.
- All cafes.
- All grocery stores
- Motels are available with no lights or hot water and at top dollar.
- The motor homes and cars with trailers are stuck… winds are just to dangerous. I’m pretty sure you would not like to be inside one either.
- The police and firefighters are very busy … I think the crooks know that.
- Credit cards are useless. Large bills may not be accepted. The $1 bill is king.
- Aggressive people cut lines and do not wait… they don’t have to.
- People sharing the experience are friendly.
- If you have to go to the bathroom and there isn’t one eventually you will go… even the ladies.
- A hot water shower is to be cherished.
- Food can be hard to come by.
- There is nothing like a good flashlight and batteries.
- When stuck waiting for the road to clear turn off your lights, radio and engine…conserve everything.
- Always carry toilet paper.
On a side note… you may remember that aggressive deer that ran over a hundred miles to jump out at our car in the article below? Well he beat us to Oregon and was standing by the freeway with a buddy waiting to give it another shot.

The Saga Continues
The Saga Continues....
Well yesterday we figured how could it get worse? First we drove up 101 from Arcata heading for home. Now this huge wind comes up with barrels of rain pouring down. We are on the narrow part of the road when suddenly a limb snaps off a tree and hits the car.. Jacky swerved and so we took only the light branches of it. Further on we came to the Prairie Creek cut off which was closed and 1 mile further 101 was closed indefinitely. Turn around and drive back to Arcata but we are blocked in because that heavy wind was a micro-burst or something like it and at least 200 trees now lie over 101 all the way back to Eureka. Crews cut and you move a few yards...
We end up hours later in Arcata at the Howard Johnson’s inn that we started from. Asking for a room for the night. The storm has knocked out all electricity in the NW area and won’t be back on for 48 hours. The rooms come with no discounts now they are top dollar. They refuse to honor their coupons. They have you. Since there is no power.. there are no restaurants or stores no gas stations. There are a few places with limited services because they have generators. There are no ATM’s our money supply is limited and dwindling.
On the bright side Donna Davi and daughter Lisa are now with us on Sunday. They got caught trying to get home too and we are now the LVH Caravan. We both left Arcata and joined up in Redding and are sharing a two bedroom suite for the night as it is snowing on the US 5. We may try again tomorrow morning to get over to Ashland. The 299 was much faster today. The crews are keeping it pretty clear but they have their hands full. It took us 3 hours to get back to Redding.

They have you. Since there is no power.. there are no restaurants or stores no gas stations. There are a few places with limited services because they have generators. There are no ATM’s our money supply is limited and dwindling.
On the bright side Donna Davi and daughter Lisa are now with us on Sunday. They got caught trying to get home too and we are now the LVH Caravan. We both left Arcata and joined up in Redding and are sharing a two bedroom suite for the night as it is snowing on the US 5. We may try again tomorrow morning to get over to Ashland. The 299 was much faster today. The crews are keeping it pretty clear but they have their hands full. It took us 3 hours to get back to Redding.
Since there was no electricity I couldn’t write yesterday.

The road trip from Hell...
What a last 2 days... Yesterday we left San Francisco fat dumb and happy. Then the trip from hell began...
Northbound on 101 ..early afternoon... Willits, CA. the highway signs light up all over the place. Highway 101 closed 70 miles north at Confusion Hill due to mud slides.. It could be closed for months according to service station attendant... He says if we take Hi-way 20 to Ft. Bragg we can bypass it. Off we go.. narrow windy road Gas up at FT Bragg..While gassing up I decide to step over the fueling hose to get my coat out of the back of the van. My left foot obeys and steps neatly over the hose. On the other hand my right foot thought it would be great fun to get tangled on the hose and send me sprawling on to the pavement. Limp to the restroom muttering unkind epitaphs. Then hiway 1 for about 50 miles until it hooks back up with 101.On the way out jumps a deer.. massive swerving by Jacky the driver... 101 is closed right there where we come out at Legget ..seems the slide is just a little bit beyond where we come out. Cal Trans guy tells us they just cleaned it up and more slid down to replace it... Has no idea when it may open again.. they have hired it out to a private contractor to fix..
That attendant ... Gahhhh! Back to Willits to look for a motel.. guess what? All the motels are going for top dollar ..wonder why? They are all full to except for the cowboy roach motel... I get a room. After I bring the stuff from the car in Jacky locks the multiple deadbolts so we will be safe from the Boogey Man. Meanwhile we decide on pizza for dinner but Jacky wants to stay in the hotel.. So we decide to call for one... No pizza delivery. OK so I will go hunt one down and kill it... nothing better than freshly killed pizza. The door won’t open.. one of the deadbolts won’t budge.... Finally I force it and am off for pizza. At the Pizza joint I inquire if they have thin crust as a choice... No they don’t but they just made the dough and it hasn’t risen much so it will probably be thin anyhow.
Next morning it is a complete deluge out there I swear you can see cats and dogs falling out of the sky. Call Cal Trans ..still closed. If we want to get to Oregon we must go back to Ukiah and cross to the San Joaquin Valley to the 5 and go to Ashland... or take the 299 to Eureka and then north on the 101.
Outside of Redding several hours later... Freeway signs are a flashin again... This time 5 is closed at Weed because of mud slides. OK so we go the 299.... toward Eureka ... We go through and are escorted through about 10 mud slides.. takes about 5 hours to go 70 miles. Lakes and rivers all on the rise everywhere and the same deer that jumped in front of us a 100 miles away ran all the way over here to do it again. A rock fell on the car shortly thereafter. Then we were stopped for 2 hours while they worked on another slide. However that was entertaining as by now everyone in our convoy had to “go” with it pouring down rain.. people would turn off their lights and stand in front of their cars for the pause that refreshes in pouring down rain.... Us included.
So we made it to Arcata and they closed down the 299. So we traveled over 300 miles today to go about 50 miles from where we were last night.....
Tomorrow we will leave this state behind and be in Oregon... Who knows what further adventures we will encounter..Maybe the Shadow knows buwhahhah...

The Magic Number
We will have 70,000 visits to our website soon. We have averaged about a 150 day lately. Here is the deal... I will be giving away a used pool cue in a case that my son sent home with me to the person who can guess the date and time we will click our 70000th visitor. A coin toss will decide ties. It's always a great pass time to drive over to a spot to watch the winter storms and how they create these giant waves, one can never get tired of watching them. Jacky are on the road again. We drove from Beaumont CA . today and are at our daughter's home in Sunnyvale. Resting up tommorow and then we will head home. Looking forward to a New Year. I am reduced to using my daughter's Apple computer which gives me fits but will try to get some news up tonight. Did you all read about the Great White Shark that took a bite out of a Seaside surferer? It's below here.
When I worked on Platform Grace off of Ventura, CA we had one come by and grab a seal off of the bouy next to the platform. The next day when we were boarding our boat to go to shore and home at shifts end... He came right under the boat while we were boarding and was turned so you could see his eye... ran chills up your spine. He was around 20 ft long.
Just so you can get a better picture of ,"Boarding The Boat..." When one boarded the boat ..the boat rose and fell with about 10 foot swells. A 1 1/2 inch rope suspended from the platform deck is what is used. The captian holds the boat as steady as he can next to the platform about 4 to 6 ft away from the deck. You grab the rope and wait until the boat goes into the trough of the swell and then swing out using the rope. If done right the boat rises on the next swell to reach you and a deck hand grabs you. You must let loose of the rope before the boat starts down into the next trough or you will be suspended in mid air swinging around like bait... not a good thing with the shark swimming around. Weak of strength and you fall in and then have to contend with the boat getting you smashed against the platform or hungry animals. Fortunately, the learning curve is real quick and I know of only one time someone fell in and another when a friend was left dangling..

NEW POND BEHIND CLUB HOUSE LVH 12-24-05
"NEW POND AT LVH's"I was out for my afternoon walk, when I came across a new water pond behind the club house here at LVH's. Don't think it's been stocked yet with fish, so leave your poles at home. But maybe we can put some sand around it and call it the "LVH's Beach Club House ". Do to all the rain we've had these past days, caused the water to build up in this area, it won't be there for ever or should it? Looks kinda nice there, adds to the view from the club house patio.

Everyone involved in collecting for the "Adopt A Family" would like to thank all the park residents for their generosity. The effort this year was a total success and the family was overwhelmed and grateful. It warms our hearts to know that we were all able to make this Christmas a happy time for one of our local families with small children who was not as fortunate as most of us.

You know how we all get that sense of foreboding when the fire trucks pull into the park? They come and someone usually goes off to the hospital. Well, it happened here in this huge tract of homes last night.
First they ran up and down the streets calling everyone out of their homes. Next fire trucks and firemen were all over telling the children they had brought Santa to them.. Finally, the dude dressed in red appeared with a bag of candy canes for everyone. We got in our sleigh and traveled the several square mile housing development and fire trucks and firemen were all over the place with their cheer.... Here when you see a fire engine it might be Santa.
While driving around looking at Christmas lights we saw that Beaumont must have an address visibility law as every home has lighted address posted on its garage.

Gray whales already have been spotted heading south to their wintering and breeding lagoons in Mexico. The 6,000-mile migration of 20,000 whales from their Alaska feeding grounds will last through February.
The migration will peak during the next few weeks, when about 30 whales will pass the coast every hour."

Away From Home...
Here we are at Rob's (my son) home in Beaumont. Arrived at about 9pm through gruelling traffic. When we leave we are going to completely bypass Los Angeles this time.
We will go up the 15 to Cajon Pass and turn off at Wrightwood. Following that route we will get on the 14, Antelope Valley freeway to the 5 just south of Magic Mountain and then across to Santa Clarita and on to 101 at Ventura and then north to Lori's (my daughter) home in Sunnyvale.I think Jacky is convinced after crawling like a snail across LA last night.
Gas ranges from $2.45 near Eureka to $2.19 in Sunnyvale. The temperature increases dramatically around Gold Beach south. Here it is about 65 now.
We hope you guys appreciate what Charles is learning to do on the website. Today we noticed that he put a link into one of his stories.. Way to go Charles!
I have some computer defugalties going on right now so it will be awhile before I can post some news stories. Probably will iron them out by this evening.
As you watch Charles' progress on the website I was hoping that more of you would like to try your hand at this. Take pictures and post them, write about things that interest you. Write only when you feel like it. It's ez ask Charles when you see him. You old hands that gave it a try back when... it is even easier now. Just email me and we will get you signed on and started. This becomes a better and more effective website with more authors.

While we were in Sunnyvale on the way down here we assembled Lori's new dining table and chairs that we bought in Salem for her.
Going south from Sunnyvale you would be amazed at the tremendous growth. In just a years time housing has exploded all the way out to Gilroy. The commute for those folks must be awful.
Don't forget to sign up for the Christmas Potluck.. Don't spend this holiday holed up in your home. Come out and enjoy your neighbors and what is probably going to be a pretty good feast.

ASKING ST NICK AT WASHINGTON MALL 12-18-05
Just asking Old St. Nick for something special for Christmas at the Washington Square Mall yesterday. This is the first time Frida and I have been there, what a great mall. Loads of people also enjoyed the mall yesterday, it was packed. Then as Frida, Lisa our daughter who arrived from Denver on Saturday afternoon at PDX airport walked from store to store until we got to the end. I then happen to look out the door at one of the large department stores and saw the white stuff coming down out of the sky. So I gathered the ladies and out the door we went, along with a whole lot of other people trying to beat the Ice Storm. This was around 3PM and took us about 40 minutes to get to the Tigard exit. Long story short, we ended up staying at the Spirt Mountain Lodge for the night. Highway 18 had been closed, do to a tree was laying across the highway and accidents were happing. So we finally got home, sweet old home around 11:30AM today. Great to be here on the coast, so much warmer and no snow or iced streets.
