Donna Davi Operated on....
Ron Thomas

Ben Davi called this afternoon and said Donna was operated on at 7:30am and is back in her room resting. They were in Eugene for the operation and will be staying there today. Ben said they expect to be home tommorow. Donna's surgery was for a rotator cuff repair.

Think good thoughts for Donna and we will look forward to seeing her on the mend here at home.

First Picasa lesson on the school house site!

The email that Alice McCllelan sent warning about a Virus is...

thanks to Jim Dodds for clarifaction:

The email making the rounds to a lot of us is a fraud designed to cause concern and worry to the recipients of the message. Jim Dodds provided several resources showing this message as fraudulent. Here is a link to Symantec (Norton anti-virus) that shows what the virus looks like in its various forms and explains it simply and concisely.

Picasa!!!
ron thomas

Well it feels kind of like a Picasa kind of evening. Let's talk about what we are going to do and how it is going to come about....

First , many of us have noticed that our computers have our pictures that we have received through email and those that we have downloaded to our computer and even some we have no idea how they got on our computer. They seem to be all over the place and we have difficulty even knowing what we have let alone how to find them. If we had a simple way to find them and organize them and all others that came along we might be interested in investing a little time in that project?

What if we organized them into different albums and could make them clear and sharp with the click of a mouse? What if we wanted to play and put a red or green lens on the picture to give it a sureal quality? What if we wanted to click on a button to make our picture look like an old tin type? Maybe we don't like Uncle Ralphs slobering dog standing next to him but the picture of him is really good..click with the mouse and dog be gone. Increase or decrease the size of the picture? Clic, click done. Turn a summer sky into a winter sky..click ..click..Done.

Click and an album is put on a slide show on your computer..Except if you have TIVO then the slide show can be seen on your 54 inch TV screen..Clear as a bell. Organize your grandkids pictures in chronological order and watch them grow before your very eyes.

Ah yes... And all this wonderful new hobby for you comes to you at the cost of ...... Not a dime! No kidding. I've already gone through most of the process using Picasa 1 which I thought was a bit difficult for most of our seniors but now there is Picasa 2 and it is so user (that's you) friendly that you almost know what to do before they tell you.

If you want to try this there is more after everybody gets this one going we will move on to downloading the FREE sister program to Picasa which is called HELLO.

Hello uses a different technology for sending and receiving pictures. You know when you are in a chat room and type an answer to someone's question? Well hello incorporates a chatroom and at the same time you are talking pictures are sent in a second where old technology would have taken minutes and that is at dialup connection speed. Hello also allows you to leave and share pictures with those friends and relatives on your personal list.

So this is quite a project. I would like to point out to you that in order to put pictures on the website I have to pay about $40 a year to second site that stores what I want to put on the website but Hello will do it for nothing and so I soon will be experimenting with ways to put the icons on Hello (icons are pictures).

So , all retirees wanting a new fun/free hobby to use your computer and camera we are about to embark on an adventure. I will be your guide for part of the way but expect to be overtaken by those with a real love of photograpy along the way.. We may even start thinking of ourselves as a computer picture club down the way. Might even have meetings to share discoveries... Who knows?

Now you know what we are going to do I'm writing the lesson now. For those chomping at the bit go ahead and download Picasa now... There is link on the left side of the page... If anybody has trouble downloading it let me know .. I can help you even if I have to come to your computer and scold it for being difficult.

Jim Dodds sent a lengthy piece about a new virus going around.....

ron thomas

Jim Dodds sent an email about a pretty nasty virus making the rounds at this time. After reading through what it affects and how it gets onto your computer it boils down to one thing... If you open any attachment in your email you put yourself at risk. This one like others gets into somebody's computer from someone that opens an email attachment or a link and then propagates itself by emailing everyone in your email address book.

The point is... Even if you know who an attachment is from, even if it is a good friend or relative they may have been infected and not know it yet and as soon as you open their attachment you are infected too.

You may not be always protected by your anti-virus program. Think about it... A new virus attacks the internet by a mass mailing. Time goes by and then the major virus checkers find out about it. During the time between introduction and the spotting of the virus we are all susceptible. Then more time is needed to write a protection against the virus and finally distribute it to the paying users of whatever service you use. During that whole time you may be open to attack.

The best way to prevent attack is to use your best judgment about opening files and attachments from an outside source. Personally, we don't open anything from chain letters or anything written by someone we don't know. Mostly, we want to see that a download has a security certificate before we will get it.

Now, most of these attacks occur on Internet Explorer web browser... You can further enhance your protection just by changing to Firefox as your web browser.
From Alice McCllelan...
From an email sent by Alice who received it form a long list of friends..

Alice forwarded an email she received today that says if you receive it and open the link on it ... It will attack your virus program in Norton Antivirus and completely wipe out your hard drive.... I think that is highly unlikely but we have a trusted source we can go to in Jim Dobbs as he is an affiliate of Symantec/Norton and would know if this is true... What do you know Jim?

The following bit was copied from Kim Komando's Web site for your information....
an excerpt kim komando's website

There are a number of Catholic churches in Las Vegas. During Sunday
masses, some worshipers contribute casino chips, rather than cash.
Since there are so many casinos, the churches send all the chips to
the diocese offices for sorting. Once sorted for the respective
casinos, a junior priest returns them to be cashed in. This priest
is known as "The Chip Monk".

I dunno ... could be...

Red X when sending and receiving email?
ron thomas

Some folks have not been able to receive pictures or send them and have been asking me what it could be?

Since I don't know what could be wrong I searched my favorite expert Kim Kommando's website and she has help for you. Turns out your outlook express maybe the culprit. In her article she discusses some causes and the fixs for them. Read the article at the below link...

Political Blog offer

Want to get those political discussions going?

ron thomas

Well, the religious community does not seem to want their own site to discuss religious concepts and ideals. The below offer to build a site for their exclusive use has had no takers. The offer will stay open for as long as I am well.

So, onto the next concept... How about we build a website for those that would like to have ongoing political discussions? I would get it up and running and show the owners how it works. Which is very simple just ask Milt Sadusky. The people that are in charge of that site would make the rules about what is allowed. I would help with any technical assistance that is needed but would have no other responsibilities to that webpage. We would provide a link to the new site here on our LVH home page to the political discussion site and on the new page we would provide a link back to the LVH site.

In fact the political website could be set up much the same way as Jim and Marlyn McCrea have the Newsletter web page setup now. They feel they are computer challenged but that is not really true they grasp concepts very easily. The way the newsletter is published (most of the time) is for them to simply email it to a special address. They don't have to do anything beyond send an article to the newsletter via email... That's it. If there is a problem they email me and I take care of it.

So that is how simple having a website can be especially if you have technical support available. And so, if you want to start the LVH Political Discussion site... Using your own rules ... Here is your opportunity. Just post a comment in this article or email me.

Want to have a website for the Fisherman's Club? Same deal is open to you.
Does your club need help setting up a page? Have an idea for a webpage that would be of interest to the park? Same deal is open to you. Want your own personal web page? I will try to fit you in to. Comment below.

Change

Change....

ron thomas

Change is something we all resist. But at our age we should all recognize that life is change. The way that this coming breakfast is being run is changing some from previous breakfasts. We ask that you be there at 9am sharp. The fact that this breakfast is not at the same time as other breakfasts has been bothering some people and I have had both direct and indirect complaints about the timing of this event.

First of all, I am not the breakfast sponsor nor leader nor planner. I did volunteer to help with it in the best way they could use me. My position as worker bee gives me zip authority for planning a breakfast.

Next I would like to give you that are gnashing your teeth and wringing your hands about the time change an offer to VOLUNTEER to do something besides gripe.

Edna Wilson wants to give this breakfast to the community and she even would do the whole thing herself if we would let her. She wants it at 9am sharp. She is doing the work and most of us will be doing the eating. Being there at 9am honors Edna for her service.

For those who would like to help with setting up tables and getting dishes, glasses, plates, tablecloths etc. We will be at the clubhouse on Friday the 25th at 3pm to do that chore.....

Glenn Paradis

Glenn Paradis writes about his new home...
ron thomas

In an email we learn a little about the Paradis family. Glenn and Shirley moved from our community a short time ago...

Ron, o.k. we're back in the land of snow and cold, wind and dust, and little rain but lots of sunshine. l jumped the gun
when asking about a download because we are living with our daughter and her husband and l'm using his computer
and its not nice to download things onto someone else's computer. we are waiting for a house to be finished in about
3 months and then l can get set up again and when I do I'd like to siphon some of your knowledge. we moved
back here to be close to family(big family), sure miss the good ole' newport area, nothing like it! we'll be keeping
tabs through the longview blog thanks to you.never give up, never give up! regards to you and Jackie, Glenn

Religious blog

Religious Blog

ron thomas

As you have seen Milt Sadusky has his own weblog (BLOG) now. He has gained experience and a following. He writes articles and has and runs his own website with the rules that he has imposed on it. He has commenting where people can speak about his articles. It took very little to set it up for him and he had a few questions that were handled by email.

Now I'm looking for a resident(s) that would like to try their hand at writing a blog for those folks who want an outlet for religious ideas, thoughts and questions and would like to set their own rules about how that website is run.

I will come to you or your group and set up your blog for you. Then I will move off to the background and keep up the technical part of your page until you no longer need help. Then I will fade away completely and just be available for advice should you need it. Like Milt's web site we will provide a link from the LVH home page to your new website and a link on your web page back to the LVH site.

I'm hoping that some of you will see this as an opportunity to do something positive for your religion and a fun hobby for yourself. You can make it a team experience with more than one person in charge with all having equal access to your webpage. So this offer extends to more than one resident or just only one.

If you have any feelings that you don't have the ability to do this please talk to Milt Sadusky and ask him how he felt before and after mastering it. I'm sure you will find it was pretty easy and he is having fun

Valentine's Ice Cream Fest

Last night 28 residents ate several half gallons of Dryers Ice Cream and others enjoyed low carb ice cream. Cake and cookies were all served to our sweeties. Best of all it was free! The event was put on by the Social Club who loves you.

Picasa 2

Begining Picasa 2...
ron thomas

There has not been a big response to the Picasa offering but I feel it is such a great offering that I have put up a link to the free download on the left side of the page under the downloads classification. Since Glenn is the only responder so far ... This is for him..

Glenn if you want to go ahead and download Picasa I will work with you via email on any questions. You will really find it to be a fantastic program. You can email me at teckron@hotmail.com ...

FireFox additions

Two new folks are trying out Firefox
ron thomas

Two more residents are trying out Firefox as their web browser. Ben and Donna Davi and Frank and Gloria Mazzeo. Ask them what they think after a few days.. You might want to give it a try. I remain available to help those who aren't sure to get it setup.

Picasa

Picasa....
ron thomas

I have been using a free downloaded program called Picasa for several months now. It used to be an expensive program but then GOOGLE bought them out and started offering the program for free for people who had Blogs like our website. I found it not very intuitive (another way to say easy) at the time. As time moved forward they offered it to the public en masse. Then, not to long ago, they introduced a new version and it has become very easy to use and will be a joy for seniors to use in my opinion.

The program is used to make your photos beautiful and organized in the most easy fashion I have ever seen. It turn ok or crappy photos into a work of art or modifies your prized ones into pictures worthy of a professional. It offers hours of fun for the photo buff and help for the camera challenged.

This program was offered with a sister program called HELLO! Hello is a extremely quick way for you to send or share photos online with your friends and relatives... instantly. It also is a way for Bloggers such as myself to put pictures on the blog (another way of saying our website).

Both of these programs are offered for free... which is our favorite price. To use them effectively we will be using the school house site to work our way through the downloading and the basics.

Organizing is the key to successful management of your photos and we will do that in our class room. Many of the pictures you have saved will be scattered all over your hard drive. Including many that you have no idea why they are there. We will be getting rid of those and putting everything in albums with names we can understand and in a central place under MY Photos.

Picasa will then show us slide shows of our favorites with a couple of clicks of the mouse.

Naturally, this is a bit of work for me so, as I have done previously, I'm asking for a show of hands in the COMMENTS below of how many folks are interested and will commit to taking the lessons. Frankly, it is too time consuming a task if there is not much interest. ..

Add Remove pgms

ADDING/REMOVING PROGRAMS..
ron thomas

In the
operating system Windows XP to remove or add progams to your computer follow this path:

On your display left click the START BUTTON.

In the pop-up menu left click CONTROL PANEL.

In the control panel menu left click ADD OR REMOVE PROGRAMS.

Wait a few seconds and all the programs in your computer will be listed for you.

Scroll through the list and find the program you want to remove and left click it.

Now scroll back to the top of the page and in the blue dialog box left click the button that says CHANGE/REMOVE.

That will do it... recomend that you do a defrag of the computer after removing a large program.

Blogger post warning

New Security for OUR web page..
Ron Thomas

There is currently no way for spam to enter our webpage unless someone emails the webpage with a story to post. If the special posting address is put into the address book of your computer and you do not have anti-virus protection on your computer you have a good chance of forwarding spam to our web page...

What this means is that if you post a story to the page using the special address feature you should put your name on it so we know who wrote the piece and so we can keep track of the computers using this feature. That will help us find the computer that needs help the next time we are attacked. Meanwhile, you can even further reduce the incident of attack by not putting the special posting address in your mail program's address book . I like Cleda's method... She has the address taped to the frame of her computer display.

If you don't have anti-virus protection you can email your article to me and I will post it for you. My computer is protected from incoming anti-virus and so you won't infect the web page.

We learned a bit about our Operating System for our computers in a below article....
Ron Thomas

Now here is a tidbit of information you need to understand.... You must not buy new programs for your computer that are not designed to run on your operating system. On the packaging of the program you are about to buy it tells you what operating systems it will work with. If it doesn't have your system ... don't buy and install it. Sure it may kind of work for awhile but it will very likely cause massive problems and crash your computer. Here is an example... You have Windows 98 as an operating system and you download Microsoft Word XP on to your computer... It will cause problems with your operating system.

The Virus that was attacking our web site...

Ron Thomas,

We traced the virus that was attacking the website to the clubhouse computer. Jim Dodds came down and removed it and took it home to find the problem.

Here is his email report of what he found and has done:
9 Virii
3 Worms
1 Trojan
382 Malware/Spyware

Reformatted to Win 98.2
7.5 Hours

Will
be back at clubhouse after a good defrag....lol (means laughing out loud)

Added Norton AV
BlackIce Firewall
Misc. Programs

Needless to say.... most of this junk came from downloading stuff without even thinking about it. Our thanks to Jim for the upgrade and the extra programs and effort. Hopefully those that use the computer will pay heed to the Norton Anti-virus prompts not to download suspected files.

Volunteer Fire Department...

Ron Thomas

A park source told me that he had thaked the fire department volunteers for their actions here on the hill . You know, they are the ones that come from everywhere when an emergency like a heart attack befalls someone in the park. That happens often for old folks such as us...

This source was talking to the volunteer fireman who retired and is a Dr. The fireman's response was, "If they really loved us they could send cookies".....

During the last few months...
Ron Thomas

We have heard criticism about how only about 30 people come to Social Club meetings or participate and help in activities. That seems to be more or less true from our observations. So, if there are only that many interested why don't those that are interested in having social events and playing just form a second club?

The Social Club would exist for the park and the other club would exist to have it's own activities. Two clubs if you will. One that has all those that never volunteer and the other that does. One that has meetings and the other for those that want to be left alone. What about the treasury? Well that belongs to the Social Club period. The other club would raise its own treasury.

So you are thinking that creates two groups of people or two classes of citizens in the park? Not so. What it does is put the do nothing folks all together where they want to be, doing nothing unless someone volunteers to do something for them for nothing. The rest of the folks would be free to have parties and celebrate until the cows come home without having to work for those that want to do nothing. It's a win win solution.

The do nothing folks could crab about how their treasury was handled. The fun havers would work twice as hard if they knew they were going to have more fun. The do nothings could stay off to themselves or with their outside interests while the social bunch rollicked and played.

Seems like the ideal solution to me

Searching for Resources
Ron Thomas

We are looking for someone who in a pre-retirement life was a sign maker or has a child that was a sign maker. Why?

Well, free is always better than paying or a discount for what we need is good..... Yep! We're looking for a freebie.... For What?

We need two large signs to post at both entrances to the park that are weather proof (that means tough) .
They will both read something along the lines of, "This Park Under Electronic Surveillance" in very large letters.
If we can't find any takers I guess we might make them with plastic letters like we did for the post light globes.

Kmart shopping...

Ron Thomas

Today
I went shoe shopping at Kmart. First in Albany and then in Corvallis. Jacky and I both needed shoes. She stayed home and I went.

I remember Kmart the store that had everything from long ago before it fell on hard times and now has become part of Sears. The first thing you notice is the near empty parking lots. That is followed by the depopulated store experience you feel when shopping.

Neither store had the shoes that I was supposed to get... Being a man however I bought some anyhow. Naturally I knew they would not be the right ones but returning from the hunt empty handed is just not in our nature.

One of the new additions to both store is human flys. They come upto you from nowhere and buzz around you offering you the chance of a lifetime to enter their big giveaway contest. They hover around giving this long spiel and then thrust a form for you fill out in your face. In desparation I said ok and filled out the form to the point where it asked for my phone number and skipped that and the email address the fly wanted. The fly then said I had to put down my phone number... Why say I? So they can call and confirm that you are entered in the contest says the fly... I said no... The fly started buzzing and humming about they could not accept the entry as she thrust the flypaper into my hand... As the flypaper stuck to my hand I wandered down the aisle muttering... damn fly.

Now at the next Kmart... a good hunter never gives up... I went in the store and purposely headed for the shoe department determined to bag the right pair of shoes when what did I spy? Another fly bothering someone else... Hurriedly I searched the shelves for my quarry hoping to get away before the fly searched me out... gotem and I'm outta here... buzz buzz hmmmmm the fly found me . I told him (this time) that he could save his time I'm not giving my phone number.... Well you all know flies... they never give up... buzz buzz hmmmm as I walked down the aisle to the check stand... then thanks be to all camels... the fly spotted another victim and he was away in a flash. It was then I noticed another Kmart annomaly...

There are 12 checkout stands but only two are open and in order to herd customers into the checkout chute where they can be prodded by the electronic atm machine Kmart has erected long narrow tunnels of jamn packed shelving spaced together just close enough to allow a basket through. Moo, I say. This just gets me odd stares from my fellow cows who are trapped between shelves and cannot leave even if a strange man is mooing behind them.

At check out I mention that the shoes I have are half off... and the cowboy in charge says oh yeah I almost forgot.... Moo I say...

A Question From an Email...
RON THOMAS

Jim Rose
wrote an E-mail asking if he should continue to dowload Microsoft's security downloads if he is now using Mozilla Firefox instead of Internet Explorer as his web browser.

Do you remember the old saw about trying to compare apples to oranges? Of course it can't be done because they are not the same thing.

What do ya mean Ron?

Well let's take a short look at computer architecture I think we can find a good answer for Jim there. Using the computer, one thing you notice is you are always on the outside looking in. What the computer does inside most of us don't have the slightest idea nor do we really want to. It does what it does and then causes things outside of it to happen. We may tell it to do a chore by way of a keyboard or a mouse and it will respond by doing something internally and then showing you what you asked for on a screen or by running a printer... it can cause many things to happen externally depending on what we hook to it. This stuff is called Hardware (the external stuff).

What goes on inside the computer though... that is what Jim's question is all about. Let's talk about three parts of the internal computer.

First, there is the OPERATING SYSTEM. Think of the Operating System as the president of your own corporation and you are the CEO (Cheif Executive Officer) The OPERATING SYSTEM takes all of his orders from you and carries them out as fast as he can. This operating system (our corporate president) has a name ...His name is Mr. MICROSOFT WINDOWS.

Our company president (Microsoft Windows THE OPERATING SYSTEM) has a whole group of underlings that he supervises and gives tasks to be done that you the CEO have specified. These middle managers are called PROGRAMS. Each manager(Program) does a specific task when called upon by the company president (Mr. WINDOWS).

Programs are software and are internal to the computer. One program's name is Microsoft Internet Explorer or IE for short. Another program is called Mozilla Firefox. Some other program names are Microsoft Word, Spider Solitaire and so on.

So if we want something done we pound a keyboard or squeeze a mouse to talk to our company president who then sees to it that the appropriate manager is assigned the task. The programs do what they do and pass the completed task back to you through the operating system(Mr Windows)...

If you receive word that MICROSOFT has updates for WINDOWS (the operating system, our president) Yes! You need them. They are just going to make the operating system Mr. WINDOWS a better PRESIDENT or keep him secure from thieves. On the other hand, if you are notified that the PROGRAM, Internet Explorer needs to be updated... Andyou are using Firefox as your browser program you don't need to download improvements for Internet Explorer as you don't use it.

You can post your stories once again on the website...

ron thomas

A little wiser after the last spam attack... Knowing what caused it. We are going to re-establish a new email address that you can send your letters or articles to here on the website.

But we will be having new security rules. We can no longer let people in to the inner workings of the web page unless they want to be on the permanent writing staff (which is now just me) In order to gain entrance these folks must realize when the computer they have been using is found to be infected with a virus they will be removed until the problem is fixed.

The special email address will become the way that casual writers post articles on the website. Occasionally, that address may have to be changed to keep the website secure. When we change or put a temporary stop on it we will announce it here on the web site.

To publish on this webpage you will need to go to the clubhouse bulletin board and get a copy of the publishing address off the poster that is there. I will have the new address up this evening. Or, you can email me for it Click here

The cause of our spam was an infected computer that would send email to this site when ever that computer went on the internet.

How Could You

How Could You?

When I was a puppy, I entertained you with my antics and made you laugh. You called me your child, and despite a number of chewed shoes and a couple of murdered throw pillows, I became your best friend.

Whenever I was "bad," you'd shake your finger at me and ask "How could you?"

-- but then you'd relent and roll me over for a belly rub.

My housebreaking took a little longer than expected, because you were terribly busy, but we worked on that together. I remember those nights of nuzzling you in bed and listening to your confidences and secret dreams, and I believed that life could not be any more perfect.

We went for long walks and runs in the park, car rides, stops for ice cream (I only got the cone because "ice cream is bad for dogs" you said), and I took long naps in the sun waiting for you to come home at the end of the day.

Gradually, you began spending more time at work and on your career, and more time searching for a human mate. I waited for you patiently, comforted you through heartbreaks and disappointments, never chided you about bad decisions, and romped with glee at your homecomings, and when you fell in love.

She, now your wife, is not a "dog person" -- still I welcomed her into our home, tried to show her affection, and obeyed her. I was happy because you were happy.

Then the human babies came along and I shared your excitement. I was fascinated by their pinkness, how they smelled, and I wanted to mother them, too. Only she and you worried that I might hurt them, and I spent most of my time banished to another room, or to a dog crate. Oh, how I wanted to love them, but I became a prisoner of love."

As they began to grow, I became their friend. They clung to my fur and pulled themselves up on wobbly legs, poked fingers in my eyes, investigated my ears, and gave me kisses on my nose. I loved everything about them and their touch -- because your touch was now so infrequent -- and I would've defended them with my life if need be. I would sneak into their beds and listen to their worries and secret dreams, and together we waited for the sound of your car in the driveway.

There had been a time, when others asked you if you had a dog, that you produced a photo of me from your wallet and told them stories about me.

These past few years, you just answered "yes" and changed the subject. I had gone from being "your dog" to "just a dog," and you resented every expenditure on my behalf.

Now, you have a new career opportunity in another city, and you and they will be moving to an apartment that does not allow pets. You've made the right decision for your "family," but there was a time when I was your only family.

I was excited about the car ride until we arrived at the animal shelter. It smelled of dogs and cats, of fear, of hopelessness. You filled out the paperwork and said "I know you will find a good home for her." They shrugged and gave you a pained look. They understand the realities facing a middle-aged dog, even one with "papers."

You had to pry your son's fingers loose from my collar as he screamed, "No, Daddy! Please don't let them take my dog!" And I worried for him, and what lessons you had just taught him about friendship and loyalty, about love and responsibility, and about respect for all life.

You gave me a good-bye pat on the head, avoided my eyes, and politely refused to take my collar and leash with you. You had a deadline to meet and now I have one, too. After you left, the two nice ladies said you probably knew about your upcoming move months ago and made no attempt to find me another good home. They shook their heads and asked "How could you?"

They are as attentive to us here in the shelter as their busy schedules allow. They feed us, of course, but I lost my appetite days ago.

At first, whenever anyone passed my pen, I rushed to the front, hoping it was you that you had changed your mind -- that this was all a bad dream...

or I hoped it would at least be someone who cared, anyone who might save me.

When I realized I could not compete with the frolicking for attention of happy puppies, oblivious to their own fate, I retreated to a far corner and waited. I heard her footsteps as she came for me at the end of the day, and I padded along the aisle after her to a separate room. A blissfully quiet room.

She placed me on the table and rubbed my ears, and told me not to worry. My heart pounded in anticipation of what was to come, but there was also a sense of relief. The prisoner of love had run out of days.

As is my nature, I was more concerned about her. The burden which she bears weighs heavily on her, and I know that, the same way I knew your every mood.

She gently placed a tourniquet around my foreleg as a tear ran down her cheek. I licked her hand in the same way I used to comfort you so many years ago.

She expertly slid the hypodermic needle into my vein. As I felt the sting and the cool liquid coursing through my body, I lay down sleepily, looked into her kind eyes and murmured "How could you?"

Perhaps because she understood my dogspeak, she said "I'm so sorry." She hugged me, and hurriedly explained it was her job to make sure I went to a better place, where I wouldn't be ignored or abused or abandoned, or have to fend for myself --a place of love and light so very different from this earthly place.

And with my last bit of energy, I tried to convey to her with a thump of my tail that my "How could you?" was not directed at her. It was directed at you, My Beloved Master, I was thinking of you. I will think of you and wait for you forever. May everyone in your life continue to show you so much loyalty.

How Big Was The Recent Sumatra Quake

How Big Was The Recent Sumatra Quake

The recent Sumatra earthquake displaced a section of the ocean floor over 700 miles long and 10 miles wide, nearly 100 feet upward. An equal amount of ocean water on the order of 135 cubic miles was moved violently upward and outward. This massive plunger type motion created huge tsunami waves that brought devastation to coastlines 4,000 miles away. On a map of the world it is hard to gain a sense of how big this thing was. So, on a map of the United States AccuWeather.com has placed the entire length of the fault segment that shifted. As you can clearly see, it is huge covering a distance from Chicago all the way to Denver or from New York City all the way to St Louis.

A devastating earthquake occurred in the Indian Ocean just off the coast of Sumatra 12-26-04. The quake, rated at a magnitude 9.0, is the most powerful recorded worldwide since 1964. Taking place at a depth of 6.2 miles below the surface of the ocean, the quake caused a severe deformation in the seafloor which displaced 135 cubic miles of water upward and outward much like what a massive plunger would do. This created massive waves called tsunamis that moved outward in all directions bringing devastation and even death to coastlines up to 4,000 miles away.

Phel Trojan

Security firm Symantec Corp. is warning users of a newly discovered Trojan horse named Phel -- an anagram of the word "help" -- that attacks Windows XP. The Trojan is capable of remotely controlling a user's system even if the latest Windows XP Service Pack, SP2, has been installed.

The Trojan, distributed as an HTML file, attempts to exploit a vulnerability in Internet Explorer's HTML Help Control component in all versions of Windows. The vulnerability was discovered in October.

Microsoft is actively investigating new public reports of a criminal attack, according to a Microsoft spokesperson.

For the exploit to succeed, an attacker would need to entice a user to visit a malicious Web site and then place the Trojan on the user's machine. If the Trojan executes successfully, potentially malicious software could be downloaded and run on the user's system, the spokesperson said.

Microsoft is working to forensically analyze the malicious code in Phel and will work with law enforcement agencies to identify and bring to justice those responsible for the malicious activity, he said.

"Microsoft is taking this vulnerability very seriously, and an update to correct the vulnerability is currently in development," the spokesperson said in an e-mail message. "We will release the security update when the development and testing process is complete, and the update is found to effectively correct the vulnerability."

Microsoft said customers in North America who think they may have been affected can receive help with security update issues or viruses at no charge by calling Product Support Services at 866-727-2338. International customers can receive the same level of support online at http://support.microsoft.com.

Customers in the U.S. who believe they have been attacked should contact their local FBI office or post their complaint online at www.ifccfbi.gov. Customers outside the U.S. should contact the national law enforcement agency in their country.

Albert Pike

With the year winding down and the tragedies in Asia, this short thing from Albert Pike, seems appropriate.

“But knowing that we shall live forever and that the Infinite God loves us all, we can look on all the evils of the world and see that it is only the hour before sunrise and that the dawn is coming; and so, we also, even we, may light a little taper to illuminate the darkness while it lasts and wait until the day spring come.

Eternal morning follows the night and a rainbow scarves the shoulder of every cloud that weeps its rain away to be flowers on land and pearls at sea. Life rises out of the grave and the soul cannot be held by quivering flesh. No dawn is hopeless and disaster is only the threshold of delight."

The Bull

With this symbolic circle ends the story of the bull.

The bull is gone. The world is gone. The music is gone.
There is neither Self nor not-Self. There is only infinite Reality symbolized by the circle of endless time.

This is Tao, Nirvana, and the final state of the superior man. The illusion of the world and the illusion of the Self in the world both came to an end. Only infinite Reality remains. The conquest of the bull results in the conquest of the world. When the world is conquered, it fades away. Only Truth remains, Truth nameless, formless, limitless, Truth to be discovered only by inward experience and meditation upon the mystery of the symbols. Epilogue, the mystic cannot put the experience into language, and now you know why.

We’re going to save you the agony of any more bull, because the year will run out before the story ends. For those rare souls in LVH who might want to see the middle of this story, Milt’s name and phone is in your directory.

URBI ET ORBI MESSAGE

URBI ET ORBI MESSAGE
OF HIS HOLINESS POPE JOHN PAUL II

CHRISTMAS 2004

1. Christus natus est nobis, venite, adoremus!
Christ is born for us: come, let us adore him!
On this solemn day we come to you,
tender Babe of Bethlehem.
By your birth you have hidden your divinity
in order to share our frail human nature.
In the light of faith, we acknowledge you
as true God, made man out of love for us.
You alone are the Redeemer of mankind!

2. Before the crib where you lie helpless,
let there be an end to the spread of violence in its many forms,
the source of untold suffering;
let there be an end to the numerous situations of unrest
which risk degenerating into open conflict;
let there arise a firm will to seek peaceful solutions,
respectful of the legitimate aspirations of individuals and peoples.

3. Babe of Bethlehem, Prophet of peace,
encourage attempts to promote dialogue and reconciliation,
sustain the efforts to build peace,
which hesitantly, yet not without hope, are being made
to bring about a more tranquil present and future
for so many of our brothers and sisters in the world.
I think of Africa, of the tragedy of Darfur in Sudan,
of Côte d’Ivoire and of the Great Lakes Region.
With great apprehension I follow the situation in Iraq.
And how can I fail to look with anxious concern,
but also invincible confidence,
towards that Land of which you are a son?

4. Everywhere peace is needed!
You, Prince of true peace,
help us to understand that the only way to build peace
is to flee in horror from evil,
and to pursue goodness with courage and perseverance.
Men and women of good will, of every people on the earth,
come with trust to the crib of the Saviour!
"He who bestows the Kingdom of heaven
does not take away human kingdoms" (cf. Hymn for Vespers of Epiphany).
Hasten to meet him;
he comes to teach us
the way of truth, peace and love.

New rules

New rules aim for more efficient do-not-call registry

People who register to be left alone by telemarketers can expect that to start happening sooner under new rules announced Thursday.

Starting Jan. 1, telemarketers will have to match their contact lists against the national do-no-call registry every 31 days instead of every three months, the Federal Communications Commission said.

The registry, which was established in October 2003, has more than 69 million telephone numbers, and is administered by both the FCC and Federal Trade Commission.

The ban on unwanted phone solicitations is the government's attempt to safeguard personal privacy and reduce telemarketing abuse.

Under a 2003 law, businesses face fines of up to $11,000 if they call people who sign up for the registry -- unless they have recently done business with them. Charities, pollsters and callers on behalf of politicians, however, are exempt.

People can register their phone numbers or file complaints at www.donotcall.gov or by calling 1-888-382-1222.

China’s Natal Demon, Pic #3

China’s Natal Demon, Pic #3

The bull is now docile and willingly follows the cowherd. The head of the bull has turned white, thus representing the perfection of the intellect. The mind is the highest part of the personality, therefore it is most easily convinced of the significance of philosophical attainment. In Asia the bull is a beast of burden. The personality is the servant of the self. The ignorant man is sometimes represented by a pilgrim carrying a bull on his back. The pilgrim meets a holy man who explains to him that he should put the bull down and ride the animal instead of carrying it. By this is meant that the body and the personality of the human being should carry or support the spiritual nature. But ignorant persons permit their spiritual lives to be burdened by their personalities.

The Real Enemy

Fighting the real enemy

The war on terror hangs in the balance.

And yet, in a time when moral clarity is so desperately needed from reporters on the front lines of that war, Americans are fed editorials attacking the liberators and language glamorizing terrorist thugs.

But more on language and labels in a minute.

First, it's time we face up to the ugly truth about the mainstream media outlets covering this war.

The fact is that newsrooms across America and Europe are filled with reporters and editors who loathe George Bush that they would rather see him lose in Iraq than see America win.

This animosity runs so deep news outlets affix the label of “occupier” to US liberators while using the term “insurgent” to describe Islamic fascists who would rather kill every man, woman, and child in Iraq than see them free.

The Michael Moore faction in the Democratic Party claims US troops are not liberators, but rather empire builders. Then again, Moore also compared the terrorists who carved off American hostages' heads to our founding fathers.

While most Democrats and leftist reporters would never make such a public admission, many do believe that spreading freedom to Iraq and Afghanistan is an imperialist scheme to spread American hegemony across the globe.

Since when did promoting Jeffersonian democracy equate to the spread of American hegemony?

Since George Bush launched this war instead of, say, Bill Clinton.

Isn't it remarkable that we never heard terms like “American imperialism” or “US hegemony” or “unilateral war” when former President Bill Clinton launched military strikes against Haiti, Somalia, Bosnia, Kosovo, Sudan, or Iraq?

Can you remember 'The New York Times' or CBS News or any other mainstream media outlet taking President Clinton to task for his wars in the Balkans?

Of course not.

In fact, most wrote editorials praising America's entrance into a 500 year civil war and printed screaming headlines exaggerating incidents of mass graves and ethnic cleansing.

Never mind the fact that the Serbs' conduct in Kosovo never came close to reaching the level of barbarism and butchery that Islamic fascists have exhibited in Iraq and across the world.

In Kosovo, an act of aggression by the Serbs was always seized upon by press to justify America's involvement there.

In Iraq, the more horrendous the terror attack, the sharper the rebuke against Bush for launching his liberation efforts.

What makes the media's moral blindness so damning is the fact that the leader of the terror network responsible for most of the Iraqi killings wrote out his war plans months ago for all the world to see.

This is not morally ambiguous stuff.

Jordanian terror king al-Zarqawi warned his followers in a memo produced earlier this year that the Americans were not going to be driven out of Iraq by terror tactics.

Therefore, the only way to stop free elections and a democratically elected government was to kill as many Shiites as possible.

After slaughtering enough innocent Shia, civil war would break out and cause the streets of Iraq to flood with the blood of the unbelievers. Then, and only then, Iraq would be a safe haven for Islamic terrorists.

Zarqawi concluded by warning his terror network that if America had its way, a representative government would be elected and then their cause would be lost.

So yesterday, scores of innocent Shia were incinerated in two of Iraq's holyist cities for simply worshipping their God as they chose.

Imagine the outrage if Christian Serb leaders had written a memo defining their chief political goal as the killing of Muslims.

'The Times' would have gone apolectic. Dan Rather would have grimly spoken of a Balkan holocaust. And Hollywood types would have been standing in line at the White House asking Bill Clinton how they could support his efforts overseas.

But with the stakes so much higher in this war, the mainstream media is churning out the bad news daily, always implying that these murderous rampages in Iraq are really the fault of their one true enemy, George W. Bush.

And what about the Shia?

The cocktail party circuit in Manhattan and Hollywood have concluded they are too stupid to live under a democratic system anyway.

But for a group of idiots, Iraq's Shiite leaders sure seem smart to me.

This summer they turned the screws on one of their own-al Sadr-and told him his attacks against the US forces would not be tolerated.

Last month, the Shia's most powerful leader delivered a religious edict ordering his people to vote in next month's elections.

And most impressively, the general population is not biting at Zarqawi's bait. They know that their family members are being slaughtered in the streets of Iraq not because of US imperialism, but because Zarqawi desperately needs to draw them into a civil war.

But unlike America's mainstream press, the Shia are smart enough to read the enemy's war memos and plan accordingly.

Imagine for a moment that we lived in a world without George Bush, John Kerry, Michael Moore, Fox News, James Carville, Vietnam, the New York Times, and the all the forces that have created faultlines throughout contemporary American political life.

In such a world, does anyone seriously doubt that all of America would be united behind this war?

Imagine a world where editorial page writers were less concerned about proving George Bush wrong than bringing freedom and hope to the epicenter of Islamic terrorism.

Imagine a country where political leaders were less concerned about what party took credit for winning a war than both parties working together toward the common goal of actually winning that war.

Imagine a world where CBS News and the New York Times editorial page dared to call those slaughtering innocents in Iraq “terrorists” instead of labeling them insurgents, as if they were throwing off the yoke of a colonial power set on ruling their land for hundreds of years.

Imagine a world where journalism schools produced reporters and editors who were not afraid to call evil by its name.

Now imagine living in a world where we are fighting for the very future of our civilization-and most of the world's press remains neutral (or worse) because they don't like the man leading that epic battle.

This war on terror has seen its epicenter move from New York to Kabul to Baghdad in the past few years. It is as clearly a war of good against evil as any America has fought since World War II.

But American and European reporters are so blinded by their cynicism— and their hatred of George W. Bush— that like Hitler's Albert Speer, they do not recognize evil when its hand is on their shoulder.

Or on the front page of their newspapers.

They refuse to tie together the 9/11 murders with the Bali bombing, or the Madrid murders, or the school house slaughter in Russia, or the assassination of election workers in Iraq.

They refuse to connect the dots because George W. Bush and Tony Blair drew a line between them first, while the rest of the world was sleeping.

Maybe that's why I am staring at a picture of a man being gunned down like a dog on the front page of the New York Times. The terrorists executing the man and his two fellow election workers conducted the murders in broad daylight for all the world to see.

And what did the New York Times call these beasts?

Insurgents.

Insurgents?

Insurgents against what?!?

These “insurgents” were not gunning down US soldiers. They were not murdering police officers who were trying to put down an oppressed people.

These “insurgents” had one goal in mind yesterday: destroying those who would dare to believe that Iraq could live in freedom and peace.

Should you and I be shocked that the media is expressing little to no outrage at this unspeakable act?

Should we contemplate why so many media outlets, who would have spoken out against this atrocity had it happened in Kosovo, Israel, or scores of other countries, are sitting quietly by while Islamic terrorists continue killing election workers, doctors, and all others who are trying to bring aid to a desperate people?

Of course not.

The media hates this war because it hates this president. It doesn't matter how noble the goal. It doesn't matter how high the stakes.

In this perverse new media reality, George Bush is evil, U.S. troops are occupiers, and terrorists who gun down defenders of democracy are “insurgents.”

Any questions?

Know Your Limits

As we enter the holiday season, I think it's important for everyone to step back and remember that we can all have fun without getting dangerous. I've attached a rather graphic picture of an overdose victim, not for its shock value, but in the hope that everyone remains aware of his or her limits.

When you look at this picture, remember that this did not have to happen.

Google Search Tool Flawed

Google desktop search flawed

A Rice University computer scientist and two of his students discovered a potentially serious security flaw in the desktop search tool recently distributed by Google, a newspaper report said Monday.
The glitch, which could permit an attacker to secretly search the contents of a personal computer via the Internet, is what computer scientists call a composition flaw, the New York Times said.

Google has begun distributing a new version of the desktop search engine that repairs the potential security hole.
