ELK

ELK...

Saturday afternoon we took a drive south along 101 and turned left on to Beaver Creek Rd. by Ona Beach. Continue for about a mile along that road and then turn right on the first road you come to. Then the drive is a few miles through hilly country side.. Best seen at a very slow speed.

Toward the end of this road it winds down off a hill to a small rolling valley of grass which ends on the banks of the Alsea River. Just as we descended into the valley we came upon a herd of 35 elk browsing the bountiful grass land. We watched them up close from our car for about 30 minutes. One bull still had antlers .. looked like a couple of sticks coming out of his head.

This is a favorite location of ours because there is usually a large flock of Canada Geese wintering there and they are fun to watch. But today the geese had company and it was a great day to see the wild life on a road less traveled.

We continued on to the Alsea River and turned right.. This will return to Highway 101 in a few miles and you will be able to head north to home with your own story to tell.
