I Was There.... Were You?

IN MY OPINION
by Ron Thomas (this is just my two cents)

Last year with the incoming of new officers to the Social Club they saw that the treasury was beginning to sink to low levels from which the Social Club would not generate enough revenue to continue doing much of anything, These officers decided to generate money for the treasury by volunteering their time and merchandise that could be raffled.

One resident donated an expensive quilt for raffle and another a work of art in glass.

Another resident was able to cut our annual expenses by donating time and a wonderful machine to turn out our monthly newsletter. That donation alone saved over $1000 in annual printing costs.

14 other volunteers came together and painted a home for a local resident earning the treasury $750.

6 other volunteers put on Light globe addresses and painted posts for them. Earning maybe another $500.

The Emergency red lights continue to be installed and probably netted about $50 for the year.

A Casino Night generated about a $300 profit and was heavy with volunteers.

A raise in the cost of breakfasts stopped them from losing money. They cost $3.50 per person now and are a bargain.

What’s this all about? Well people in this park have been using the rumor mill to distribute their opinions. I don’t have to I can write from here…

Recently a resident applied to the Social Club to have a home painted. Jacky and I went to the home and met with the owner. We explained last year we painted a home for $750 here in the park. We explained about 14 people participated and at an after painting meeting of these volunteers it was decided by that group that they would never do it again for so little money. It was just too hard.

We gave the current painting request the choice of choosing a donation between $1000 and $1300 and we would muster the volunteers to paint the home. WE also told the owner that Lee Watkins told the owner of the home we painted last year he would’ve painted it for less. We suggested she contact Lee and ask him for a bid and to also ask other painting contractors for a bid. Then let us know if we were wanted.

Now we have comments coming down the rumor mill... He said ..she said type of thing (from folks that do not participate in the Social Club) that we have too much money in the treasury and should give it back to all the residents….And that The Social Club should be ashamed of itself for telling the the home owner requesting Social Club volunteers to paint a home the donation of $1000 to $1300 and we should volunteer to do it for nothing. I am not ashamed. I am not about to paint a home for nothing. After this years hard work by so many people to replenish the Social Club treasury I wouldn’t even consider the idea of giving the money in the treasury away.

If you would like to speak to me or Jacky about your feelings on this subject we have a phone number on the resident’s list and we welcome you to our home. Or you are welcome to put your comments on this article by clicking the “Comments” at the bottom of this story. In my opinion the rumor mill is not a very good way to do things.
