Trip to Savannah

Emailed in by Wayde and Barb Dudley

We got to Savannah and Tybee Island, Georgia on Sunday, September 24th. Our first impression of Tybee Island was seeing the ocean (which is 1/2 block away from our motel room). Beautiful white sand with boardwalks over the dunes and beach grass growing on the dunes. People were sunbathing and playing in the waves, some surfing. It so reminded me of the beaches we used to visit when I was growing up in Southern California when you could park on the street and walk to the beach without paying or having to put up with thousands of people. We walked to the gazebo at the end of the pier and they were playing an old Elvis song - perfect! We got ice cream cones and walked to the end of the pier to see what the fishermen were catching. Didn't seem to be catching much but eveyone was enjoying the weather (it was in the 80's with a nice breeze). We saw something jump in the water and realized they were dolphins! That and watching the pelicans made it perfect.

We went in to Savannah that afternoon and walked the river walk (a lot of it built in the 1700's). We got tickets for the dinner cruise on a sternwheeler that night. The port of Savannah is very active and we stood on the deck and watched all the big freighters go by and looked at some very nice yachts. Amazing that we were standing on the deck, on the river, at night, and we didn't have to wear jackets! Supper was lovely and there was a guy with a keyboard, guitar and music system playing everything from jazz to blues to rock. There was only about 20 people on the cruise so it was really nice. It was a great night.
The next morning we started our day with the Paula Deen tour. We didn't get to see her but we went all over town visiting all the places she has worked, lived and places she shops on her tv show. We had lunch at Uncle Bubba's Oyster House, Paula's brother's restaurant. It was great and we sat at a table with an older couple from Florida. They had lived in Genoa, Nevada for some years and loved cowboy poetry. We talked cowboys and ranching. Small world, huh? It was hot and humid and too tiring to stand in line to eat at Lady and Sons restaurant so we just took a picture and went inside to the gift shop (eat your heart out Jacky). We then went for a carriage ride through the historic district. Amazing.
Tuesday we drove a few miles into South Carolina and went to Hilton Head. It's a beautiful island with golf courses and beautiful homes all along the drive to the coast. At the Harbour Marina there were several beautiful yachts docked and, again, beautiful homes and golf courses. Never much wanted to be rich but that place made it look pretty nice.
We sadly left Savannah Wednesday morning and are now in Atlanta ready for the next leg of our adventure.
