Newport News-Times: County plans to protect Yaquina River wetland:
By Joel Gallob Of the News-Times
Lincoln County is in the process of developing the paperwork to help the Wetlands Conservancy purchase a conservation easement to protect a parcel of wetlands on the north side of the Yaquina River, midway between Newport and Toledo. The county, in this instance, is in the interesting position of being both the owner of the property to be protected while, at the same time, helping to finance the transaction.

The Wetlands Conservancy has offered $43,000 in cash to the county, reported County Counsel Wayne Belmont, toward the purchase of a conservation easement in the wetland. Such an easement does not transfer title to the property, but rather, creates a prohibition against certain kinds of activities - those that could impair the natural character of the site.
