Deep Sea Fish Washes Up on Oregon Coast - Alive: "Photos by Tiffany Boothe

(Seaside, Oregon) – “It just goes to show what cool things there are out there for beachcombers,” said Keith Chandler, manager of Seaside Aquarium. “You never know what you’ll find.”

For the second time in three months, the north Oregon coast was the recipient of a rare fish stranding event, where a live fish was rescued by staff at the Seaside Aquarium.

On Friday, a group of concerned citizens discovered something flopping around in the surf at Sunset Beach, just north of Seaside. The creature in question turned out to be a longnose skate, which was not only alive – but was an extraordinary find because this species usually lives well below the ocean surface."

BOSTON — Even the best police gumshoe can go in circles chasing down a reported gunshot. Was the sound echoing from another direction? Was it just a firecracker? Sorting it out takes precious minutes – especially if a victim lies wounded, or a criminal is slipping away.

Enter gunshot detection technology.

Sixteen cities across the country have installed ShotSpotter, a system of rooftop listening devices that triangulates the origin of gunshots and pinpoints, in seconds, the location on a map. This week, Boston introduces a plan to spend $1.5 million on the system."

AT Our Daughters

Ron and Jacky Thomas

We got here a little after 4:00PM No trouble in the drive. Tomorrow I get started securing the place.

For the CERT team and the community.... We stopped at Harbor Freight in Arcada. I bought one megaphone. Had planned to buy 5 but they upped the price to $15 apiece. They were $7. The clerk says they go on sale every 3 months so we will wait. This also gives us a chance to try out one to see if it is all we want it to be. The clerk says if it does go on sale from 90 days of purchase they will refund the difference. When I get home will turn the receipt over to the Social Club.

Let me talk to you folks our friends and neighbors. I am heartened by your response to the controversy article. I think enough has been said and plan to let it drop now.

If you really want to help the CERT team you could talk to your Neighborhood Watch Block Capitan and convince them to buy an FRS radio with a battery Charger. Why? CERT and the Neighborhood Watch Block Captains working together will increase the CERT team's ability to help the community in a rapid manner. In point of fact Neighborhood Watch will be asked to perform an assessment of the damage and injured within their group and relay that information via FRS radio CH5 To CERT Operations. With them doing that we can cut 4 hours off what the CERT team would have to do before they could begin rescue operations and First Aide. 4 hours .. 4 HOURS! Think of the possible lives that can be saved... Think of the rescues that can be done almost immediately. The Neighborhood Watch Block Captains have a huge and important roll to play in our community Disaster plans. Yet they are unusable without communications. Our hope is between the CERT team and you, our neighbors, we can get our Block Captains motivated to buy a radio.

How will it work? After the disaster CERT will be setting up for a time in order to prepare for operations. During the same time our CERT Communications team (Liz Hill and Kristy Graff) will set up neighborhood, CERT and Lincoln County Emergency Services communications links.
The team will survey their neighborhoods on the way to the operations center (the clubhouse if it is still standing). The teams will organize and begin operations taking any volunteers willing to work under their supervision. About this time radio links should begin being established and an Incident Commander from CERT will assume the lead roll. People from the community will listen on their radios on CH 5 if they need help they will ask and Kristy or Liz who will notify the CERT team. Soon the Neighborhood Watch block Captains will call in with their knowledge of who is at home and who is injured, and how badly. The Incident Commander will establish priorities and dispatch the teams and volunteers at his/her disposal.

We are presently working on guidelines for incident commanders for all the emergencies we can see befalling the community. All the large ones require Block Captains and radios. This then is probably our single biggest problem right now. Please talk to your Block Captain and ask them to get a radio with a charger... while you're at it... consider buying one for your self.

Hey, all you sons, daughters and grandkids... what a great gift for Grandpa and Grandma, an FRS radio with a charger! Nothing says love like an FRS radio :)

The next time we have a power loss wouldn't it be great to just be informed as to what is going on? Wouldn't you like to know that there is someone out there that you could ask for help... Here is one for you... You have a power loss, it's raining, blowing, nasty, your wife is having a heart attack, your phone doesn't work, You don't know how to get your garage open to go to the hospital.. You have a radio :) tune to CH5 and ask for help... Most of us know CPR. We know how to get your garage door up We have stretchers and know how to use them. In fact they were especially designed by our seniors for our seniors.. And some day the clubhouse may have a defibrillator... 95% of the CERT team has been certified to use them.

CERT Team Creates Controversy At LVH....

Monday, 15th... @The Social Club Meeting...

In the last year and a half that the CERT team has come into existence it has always been plagued with funding problems that have caused it to seek many creative solutions toward making our community a safe place during an emergency. A finer group of community minded citizens you could not ask for in my opinion.

Since we are dedicated to raising the LVH community to a standard that will enable the community to survive all manner of disasters and 90% of our training and time is spent right here at LVH working for the common good of every resident at LVH we sought to acquire status as a service club working under the auspicious of the Social Club in addition to our affiliation with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Police, Fire Dept.'s, Coast Guard, Red Cross and Lincoln County Emergency Management.

Our goal in doing that was to ask the Social Club to support our group with a $250 annual budget. The Social Club voted unanimously to take us under their wing and fund us.

Not very long after the meeting was over we started getting feedback that a resident was upset and asserted we (the CERT Team) would bleed the Social Club treasury dry. Personally, this was offensive to me and probably to the whole team of volunteers who have spent many hours of voluntary work and monetary donations of their own.

Now the activity planning group which met shortly thereafter has come up with an idea that we can all get behind. They suggested that we (the CERT team) could volunteer to cook a couple of breakfasts during the year to help defray the $250 funding we asked for. Most of us have learned from life that their is no free lunch and so the team members all felt good about volunteering to help cook those breakfasts and are looking forward to yet another way to serve the community.

Entering a post script here.. The Social Club and the CERT team are working on ideas for future fund raisers.

Driving Safely On Icy Roads, AAA's Robert Sinclair Offers Expert Advice - CBS News: "WE'VE HEARD SO MANY THEORIES ABOUT WHAT TO DO IF YOU HIT A PATCH OF ICE AND BEGIN TO SKID. WHAT'S THE PROPER WAY TO GET THROUGH IT SAFELY?

Most skids are caused by excessive speed in a turn. If you've gone into a turn too hard, the car begins to skid, because it loses traction. In the past, we've been told to steer in the direction of the skid, but that advice applied when vehicles were rear-wheel drive. Many are now front-wheel drive, so the new thinking is to look in the direction that you want to go in and steer in that direction. We are creatures of our eyes, so when you lose control, just keep focused on where you want to go; don't look at walls or other cars, because you will crash into them. Anti-lock brakes will enable wheels to keep turning and enable you to maintain control of steering. Just keep your foot on the gas.

If you don't have anti-lock brakes, use the threshold braking technique. Step on the brakes, sort of like pumping — pump, look and steer. Even on sheer ice, there is a measure of traction available and if you take advantage of that, you should be able to get around it. "

A new kind of Pine

Last night as we returned home from the Sizzler after dining we saw a person (looked like a lady) Standing down by the gate looking across the park. We decided to go around and investigate. By the time we got back around to have a look she had disappeared. So up the hill we chugged on Evergreen.. When we spotted a new kind of large pine in front of Ben Davi's house. It was a Porcupine. He was big-un.

He was digging and rooting in the grass. We took Ben home and got the million power light out and back around to watch Porky. He had wandered over to Jackie Johnson's home and was bothered by our spotlight so he ambled up to Mike Larsen's fence and went toward Windmill. Cool huh?
Our Newport Police Department

Today was the culmination of a lot of work for the Newport Police Department's web sites. We have been working setting up the accounts with them for quite awhile. Yesterday we received a green light from the Chief to finish the websites. They are all operational now and make a lot of tools available to you for reporting criminal activity or problems in our community. In addition there is an arrest log that shows who got arrested and why. There is a new News Release page that gives the full accounts of an arrest. Not the abridged ones you see in the newspaper.

Be better informed about the community and visit and use these new sites as often as you like.

Take a look at the "File a Report" page. We made it with the folks here at LVH in mind based on what we have observed over the years. It works beautifully just fill in the form and send it.

The police Dept has plans to change pictures on their site more often to give you a window on their activities and plans for two more websites. One will be a page that honors our police and another will be a form that you fill out that will put your name on a police email list where they can warn and update the community about developing problems. Here is a link to the front page of the Newport Police.. Explore the entire site it's a good read.

Behind the scenes with the LVH CERT Team:

Last night there was a Tsunami warning that splashed across the TV screens. There had been an 8.3 earthquake in the Kiril Islands. The warning indicated a degree of uncertainty if there had been a tsunami generated. Earthquakes over 7.9 can cause tsunami's. The team knows this.

First to find the notice was Marlene Crites who got a phone call from a friend in Yachats. The friend was concerned enough that she visited the fire station across the street to confirm the report. Confirmed she called Marlene. A warning means that there is a possibility of a tsunami. You have to wait then for pressure sensors in the ocean to confirm that there was actually a tsunami generated.

During the wait Marlene started the calling tree to alert the CERT team. As she passed on the warning she told everyone to Meet on CH5 on our FRS radios. Once everyone was assembled and those that had scanners were deployed information started trickling in. Those with NOAA radios listened for an announcement from NOAA which came about every 15 minutes and basically said a tsunami was not projected for the Northwest but for the Japanese Islands of 3 ft.

We agreed to leave our radios on as developments may have changed. Nothing further developed so we went back to our normal state of readiness after a couple of hours.

What you can do when a tsunami alert is displayed on your TV... You can tune to CH 5 on your FRS radio and listen for all the detailed alerts that we have access to. Listen to the team as it ramps up to mobilize or follow the decision making process.

I'm a 37-year-old man with a family history of heart disease, and the good doctor quickly rattled off several things that I should already be thinking about in terms of preventing a heart attack or stroke. And his concern is not just directed at me. Agatston is an ambitious man. He's written seven books and maintains a full-time cardiology practice, but now has his sights set higher--on healing the entire country. He believes that with a few simple steps he can help eradicate heart disease and stroke in the U.S. He writes all about it in his latest book, The South Beach Heart Program (Rodale)."

Grab your binoculars for a comet party: "With clear skies predicted, Northwest sky watchers may get a look at Comet McNaught, which could be visible to the naked eye low in the west-southwest sky after the sun sets a few minutes before 5 p.m. It will be in the sky for about an hour.

A clear view of the horizon is essential because the comet is less than 10 degrees high -- the equivalent of a fist held at arm's length. Because it will travel so low, the best views may be on the coast where no natural features, buildings or night lights can interfere. "

What causes societies to collapse? There are a myriad of theories: resource depletion, high taxes, environmental degradation, moral flaws in the citizens of the society, natural disasters such as earthquakes or volcanos, and more. In The Collapse of Complex Societies, Joseph Tainter argues that none of these is an adequate explanation."

SEASIDE, Ore. (AP) — Emergency planners warn that residents of this coastal city might have to live for weeks without their usual supplies of food, water or shelter if the town is flooded by a tsunami.

The city is hiring a tsunami education coordinator to set up a volunteer emergency response program and caches of supplies for immediate needs for evacuated people."

But even more important, because amniotic fluid is so easy to harvest, it would make it possible to create thousands of cell lines.

'If you banked 100,000 specimens, you'd be able to provide cells for 99% of the U.S. population with a perfect match for genetic transplantation,' Atala says."

New CERT Team members at LVH

Today was final test day for 12 new members at the old City Hall. These folks have been attending classes taught by Newport Fire and Police Department, the US Coast Guard, Red Cross and Pacific Ambulance Service since September. Classes ran about 3 hours per session. All culminated today in a written and practical test with older members acting as victims and trainers under the direction of Assistant Fire Chief Toby Cole (who spent this day, his birthday, with the CERT team) and Ret. Police Sergeant Dean Sawyer.

What this means for our community at LVH is the addition of two more skilled team members. Both new members of our team have also been attending our weekly LVH CERT meetings for months. So, there really will not be a need for them to integrate and learn our procedures as they have been doing that all along.

Please congratulate Greg Pfalmer and Wayne Hill if you see them about the hill and know that you are looking at two fine men who have studied and trained to watch over the welfare of everyone in our community in case of a disaster. Good to know they are there for us.

Feds: Crisis Communications Subpar In U.S., Homeland Security Survey Gives Only Six American Cities High Ratings For Emergency Communications - CBS News: "Homeland Security is under the gun to improve emergency communications among first responders, and Chertoff has pledged to achieve nationwide interoperability by the end of 2008.

The Department of Homeland Security study comes five years after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, revealed major problems in how well emergency agencies were able to talk to each other during a catastrophe. Many firefighters climbing the World Trade Center towers died when they were unable to hear police radio warnings to leave the crumbling buildings.

In New York now, the report said, first responders were found to have well-established systems to communicate among each other — but not the best possible.

Just over a year ago, Hurricane Katrina underscored communication problems when radio transmissions were hindered because the storm's winds toppled towers. "

Mysterious Structures Reappear on Central Oregon Coast Beach

Mysterious Structures Reappear on Central Oregon Coast Beach: "Mysterious Structures Reappear on Central Oregon Coast Beach
Ancient stumps once buried have reappeared

(Newport, Oregon) - Some three hundred years ago – so the prevailing theory goes – a massive tsunami hit what would become the Oregon coast, changing the landscape and leveling entire forests, not unlike the blast of Mount St. Helens 25 years ago.

The eerie remnants of this event are now visible again on Newport’s northern beaches, showing a series of strange structures and shapes on the beach that look like some sort of collaboration between Roger Dean (the man who did the Yes album covers) and Dr. Suess.

Head to Moolack Beach or Beverly Beach, on the northern end of town, and you’ll find giant octopus-like structures, the leftovers of root systems dotting the beach. There are currently about nine of the big structures at Moolack, with dozens of smaller tree points sticking out of the sand in various areas."

Our calendar for the News letter..

What happens when the calendar person is away from home and gets sick? Oops! No calendar for the coming 2 months on your frig. :(

Sad state of affairs this. There may be a ray of hope though. We have noticed with the influx of new people to the community of new neighbors this year came people with more computer skills. Also, a few of us older nutz are learning computers too.

What we can do to stop this problem could be solved if I sat down and put to words the steps to get a calendar ready for our printer. Then those with the skills or those that would enjoy the challenge of doing something new on a rainy day could give it a try. I bet several of you can do it.

Now you new folks probably do not know about the LVH School House website. It is a place that Jim Dodds and myself developed to help residents learn computer skills. From time to time I should be putting lessons in that have value to the community. Haven't done that for a good while. But today,, it's raining, I'm recovering and there is a problem that can be solved.

So if you visit the LVH school house website you will find a tutorial on how to make a calendar suitable for printing or for your refrigerator yourself.

Here is how to navigate to the school room. On the left side of this page click the icon that says "LINK CITY". This index web page contains links to websites of interest to our community. In the first column you will see an icon for the school house. Click it and read the new lesson. Give it a try and next time there will be one more person who can make a calendar for the newsletter.

The Sunlight-Powered Future

I'm optimistic about…a pair of very big numbers. The first is 4.5 x 10ˆ20. That is the current world annual energy use, measured in joules. It is a truly huge number and not usually a cause for optimism as 70 per cent of that energy comes from burning fossil fuels.

Thankfully, the second number is even bigger: 3,000,000 x 10ˆ20 joules. That is the amount of clean, green energy that pours down on the Earth totally free of charge every year. The Sun is providing 7,000 times as much energy as we are using, which leaves plenty for developing China, India and everyone else. How can we not be optimistic? We don't have a long-term energy problem. Our only worries are whether we can find smart ways to use that sunlight efficiently and whether we can move quickly enough from the energy systems we are entrenched in now to the ones we should be using. Given the perils of climate change and dependence on foreign energy, the motivation is there. "

Systemic Flaws In the Reported World View

Paradoxically, one of the biggest reasons for being optimistic is that there are systemic flaws in the reported world view. Certain types of news — for example dramatic disasters and terrorist actions — are massively over-reported, others — such as scientific progress and meaningful statistical surveys of the state of the world — massively under-reported.

Although this leads to major problems such as distortion of rational public policy and a perpetual gnawing fear of apocalypse, it is also reason to be optimistic. Once you realize you're being inadvertently brainwashed to believe things are worse than they are, you can... with a little courage... step out into the sunshine."

Let's Save Bucks!!!

Send in your money saving ideas. Lets see if we can all stretch our retirement dollars a bit more. I'll start with one given to me by Dan and Sue Wilson a few years ago and I will testify it is a beauty.

Cancel your local telephone long distance service. They more than likely have been overcharging you for years and years. They could because they were the only game in town. Oh go ahead and keep your basic local phone. Just drop off the long distance service.

You can try this idea before you cancel just to prove to yourself it works. First go to COSTCO or have a friend go and pick you up an MCI long distance credit card. It costs around $20 and is the last card you will have to buy. They charge you 3.5 cents a minute for a call anywhere in the US. Dirt cheap.

How it Works:

This card has an 800 number on it which is a toll free local call. Call the number. A recording will come on and ask you to select "one" for English. Punch the 1 button. It will then ask you to enter your pin number that is on the card. Do it. The voice thanks you and asks you to dial your number area code first and tells you how many minutes you have left. Then you dial and are connected. That's it.

What are the advantages?
  1. Way lower long distance phone bill.
  2. Take the card with you when you travel. It works the same way wherever you may be... In a hotel room or an airport lobby.. Same low rate.
  3. We buy more minutes and keep the same card right over the phone. $60 worth lasts months and months. Jacky can tell you how long she usually takes to use up the time. Maybe she will in a comment.
  4. Staying at a friends house but want to call long distance for some reason? Use their phone and your card and they incur no charges on their bill and you get a better rate than they get anyhow.
Now that dialing sounds like a bit of a put off doesn't it? Well, if you have a home phone that has memory storage on it (usually that's a cordless phone folks) you can do away with getting the card out, dialing the 800 number, Then the pin number and finally your long distance number.
Most modern phones are set up to automate this operation for you. You program the memory on your phone to remember the 800 number then program it to remember the pin number that way you are only 2 key presses away from making your ultra cheap phone call.

Yes it is worth it.. I promise. Try it for the price of the card at COSTCO without risking what you have now. You won't lose a thing. You will use your $20 worth of minutes. No loss there. Nothing lost at the phone company... Win! Win!

Now we know that those that resist change or feel technically challenged will say no. I will help set up your phone if it can be set up and there are a group of people that will probably help if it becomes a large project.

What's your money saving tip? email me.

Happy New Year!

Jacky and I wish you the best for the coming year and wish to confer this ancient blessing on each and every one of you, " May the cold nose of a camel thrust underneath your tent never reach your back whilst you slumber."

Attend the New Years festivities at the clubhouse this evening. We won't be there because the cold nose of a camel got us down with the flu and we fear we are contagious to other folks.

We will look forward to seeing everyone next year.
