Thursday we attended a CERT informational meeting at the City Hall here in Newport. LVH had 3 folks come. Larry Henson, Park Manager, Ed Simon, and myself.

CERT = Community Emergency Response Team

Newport has received a grant from the Department of Homeland Security and The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to help create, equip and teach volunteer community groups to assist their neighbors during a disastorous event... Such as may have happened with last month's Tsunami Alert had it become a reality. Or in the case of a wild fire... Two of Newport's biggest concerns.

Realizing that our professional law enforcement and firemen will most likely be overwhelmed if such an event were to ocurr the two agencies have created training modules to show citizens how they can be involved and organized to provide help within their communities such as LVH. Thereby bridging the gap from the time of the disaster until professional help can arrive.

The training will take from 5 to 7 modules to complete. Each module being about 3 hours long. Another informational meeting is scheduled for mid September with training to start about 2 weeks after that. At the conclusion of the modules attendees will be certifed by FEMA.

The informational meeting shows how to do things that we as seniors can do. No one is asked to do more than they want to. What things you say? Do you really know how to use a fire extinguisher with a partner to keep from getting burnt? Do you know how to safely pry a load off a victim trapped by it? Do you know veeeerrrry basic first aid? Do you know real ez carries to help remove victims from danger? Know how to communicate necessary facts to the professionals? know how to direct traffic?

Well you will ...Keeping in mind that you will not do anything that jepodizes your own health or well being.

Think about it. This subject will come up again here on the site. Meanwhile we hope after you have considered what a help this can be to our community ... You will roll up your sleeves and take a seat next to mine at the next CERT meeting...

Second Time Around Sale (aka: Lvh Community Garage Sale)

Once a year we have garage sales on one day and invite the community to LVH to stroll from one to the other. This takes a bit of co-ordination to get it to come off without a hitch. So we have been asked by Joy Newman to start advertising to all of you to get ready.

This year's sale will be held from 7:30am until 4:30pm on Saturday September 3rd.Don Newman is taking care of putting the ad in the News Mirror and putting the signs out.

Now is the time to clean out your garage and get ready for the sale.

New residents need to know that garage sales are not usually allowed at LVH and so this a once a year ocurrence. If you planned to rid yourself of extra stuff you brought to your new home now is the time to get ready.

There are no fees to have this sale and we certainly wish you good luck.

Me personally, I would like to see the previous tradition of letting residents see your sales items on Friday before the sale is open to the general public.

As time progresses the Social Club board and then the Social Club Meeting in August should have more details.. Right now, your best resource to answer questions would be Don Newman.

Birthday's Posted on Calendar...

Today is a laid back day so we are catching up on things on the website. We have added several new residents and deleted a few others.. Corrected misspelled names and other time consuming work. Thanks to Marylin Kalar who has the job of keeping a tally on the birthday list. Of course our website calendar makes it impossible for the birthday list to be stolen from the clubhouse as in the past. Birthdays are posted to reocurr every year so they only need to be added or deleted once. Marilyn proof reads and keeps up with the list and lets me know of changes that need to be made.

If you would like to have your name put on our list and subsequently on the calendar and on the website with a birthday greeting please contact Marilyn or me with your date.

You will notice this months and the next months birthdates appear on the left side of the webpage near the top and on the website calendar. As a date becomes close within 4 or 5 days we post a personal birthday card to the birthday boy or girl here on the site.

You can look ahead until 2007 and see if your birthday is on the calendar.

Now the end is near.

Fred Kawabata sometimes falls. In the middle of the night, it's difficult for him to travel from his bed across the soft carpet to the bathroom, with his balance permanently altered seven years ago by a rare virus that attacked his inner ear.

'There are times when I reach down for something . . . I lose my balance and fall on the floor,' he says.

The condition led Kawabata, 66, a retired electronics engineer who enjoys hiking, to the Balance Disorders Lab at Oregon Health & Science University, where a young Italian engineer has been testing a portable audio device intended to help people with balance disorders."

One more question on traffic situations .....

Pretend again that you are driving up the hill on Windmill dr. As you pass through the gate you see a speed limit sign ... The sign says, "Speed Limit 15"... Does that mean?

• (A) 15 miles per hour.
• (b) 51 miles per hour.
• (c) 15 miles per second.
• (d) None of the above because this is private land and driving rules don't apply here.

I'm pretty sure a lot of folks think the answer is anything but (A). Perhaps one nice thing to do would be to advise those people providing a service to you what the speed limit is and it wouldn't hurt to mention it to visitors too. For residents.. that like, 'B', 'C', or D above... well I just don't know what to say.

Pretend you are driving out of our park. You pass by Szabo's and pull to a stop at our stoplight on 101. Across the street there are cars signaling a right turn on to 101 toward town. Your and their traffic light turns green.

I think the people making the right turn on to a single lane (101) have the "right of way" over myself wanting to turn left. When they have all gone then it is my turn and I can complete my left turn.

Recently, we had a park resident pull up behind us and sound their horn because we were letting all the people make their right turns and not trying to slip in between them. What is your interpretation?

Every once in awhile we make a pitch for new writers on the website... It's that time again.

This website was created about 3 years ago. At the time we envisioned at least 10 people writing articles of interest on a regular basis with others in the community commenting on those articles and just generally having a good time. We didn't know squat about building a site and self taught ourselves about code and began evolving the site we have today. Along the way it somehow became a passion for me.


Lessons learned during the evolution of this site have not all been easy. We learned that people have diverse ideas about everything and are willing to tell you about them.. (this includes me). Mostly, though we learned how personal ideas of religion and poltics can fracture the community and create open hostility. This led to the ideas that religious prosteltizing and personal political views aren't allowed here.. As editor, I make the decisions as to what that might be . This sounds despotic and restrictive of course but we found someone has to set rules or chaos ensues. Since this is my creation I am the one that does it.


There is one religious rule that the site follows and I beleive you will find some form of that rule in most religions and it is, "The Golden Rule".


The site has evolved into me writing everything and filling in with news articles from the web that we find interesting. And an occasional forwarded joke from a reader and forwarded pictures.


The comments at the bottom of each article were put in for you the community to have your say on each and every article. Mostly, they are not used. The rules for the comments are less restrictive than articles written on the site. You can say pretty much what you want but keep the golden rule in mind when you do it. Also, you must identify yourself. Annonymus comments get deleted. If you would like to comment just click the comment link, provide your name in the box and write what you want to say. You don't have to live here or have any special qualification... all are welcome.


Now to the meat... Where's the beef?

If you would like to write on the page... get a feel for blogging and learn how to do this... You are welcome. On the other hand if you would like to write but don't have the desire to learn anything about blogging you just have to email an article to me at:

Well today we had 1 and a half people at the meeting. (the half Dick Garvey) Had to leave to celebrate his birthday.


I'm thinking that with the beautiful weather we have been having it is just hard to come to a meeting in the summer. So I am cancelling meetings until October as Fall sets in and we will give it a try again.


Meanwhile, Dick, Bev and Wayne we can meet at one another's home and use the notebooks and our networks to explore the net. If Anyone else wants to have a meeting at their home and you have Wi-Fi you can have the meeting as we can all explore the internet together simultaneously that way...

Evolving the calendar...

Well as you can see the calendar has moved and you can now scan acrossed it without scroll bars. "She Who Must Be Obeyed" (Jacky) is pleased. Personally, I don't care for it... Since changing it to white so it could be printed for the monthly newsletter it just looks ugly to me. It takes up a bunch of room at the top of the page too... grumble, grumble.....


On the otherhand it does give a good, easy and clear view of the activities at LVH which makes it handy. Maybe you have to let it grow on you or sumpin. We'll leave it this way for awhile and see what folks think.


Don't forget you can click the top menu on the calendar to move ahead a week at a time.

Plame -- who is referred to by her married name, Valerie Wilson, in the memo -- is mentioned in the second paragraph of the three-page document, which was written on June 10, 2003, by an analyst in the State Department's Bureau of Intelligence and Research (INR), according to a source who described the memo to The Washington Post."

I think this may be a good idea. I know if I ask for feedback (comments) about 4 maybe 5 of you will answer. It's always the same ones but if I could just tickle your ear a bit maybe you will give some constructive ideas?

You can toggle the calendar forward by selecting dates on the top row. If you need to look way ahead then you should use the calendar icon on the left side of the page. Notice that there are up and down and side to side scan controls.

Also, the calendar shows up every time there is a day change all the way down the posting frame.... I'm still thinking about that one but Jacky thinks that might be handy also.

Hello

Here we are still in Kentucky. We are beginning to consider selling our home in
Newport and buying a piece of heaven out here. Once you get past sweating in
the summer, and freezing in the winter its not too bad. Except for the fact
that just about everyone smokes out here including in all the restaurants too.
Guess this is the land of Philip Morris. I'm not sure that we will be alive
long enough to make it back home, if the heat don't get us then the second hand
smoke will. Need one of those pairs of red heeled shoes so that we can click our
heals and and say " THERE IS NO PLACE LIKE HOME" and be whisked back home. But
that's not going to happen. Instead we will probably start smoking again in
self-defense.
As you can tell all is well out here, our daughter is still pregnant which is
good for her and the baby. She is in the hospital, if she continues to do well
they may release her Wednesday otherwise they will keep her till the baby
comes.
Again Bonnie asked that you show a little love to her Cactus. Got to go for now
will write again soon.

When Dick Garvey asked if the magnification on google earth program that we put a link into in a below article could be made clearer, I thought that what you see is what you get and it is, sort of.


Today we decided to look at a more populated area. We flew G Earth to Portland and it showed fine detail down to the smallest cars. So the more populated the area the better the resolution. We later investigated places we used to live and found that the maps are not an upto date thing but pictures residing in the past but recent enough to show the current lay of the land.


We suggest you fly to an area of high population and have a look. Kewell. Try Portland for instance.

Burnt out Post Lights

Last night we made a list of lights that were out through the community. We recommend you replace them with a 40watt rough service bulb.

Bulbs over 40 watts cause the globe to accumulate heat stress and over time will cause them to shatter. Also, if you have an emergency red light bulbs over 40watts will tend to wash out the color should you need to use the system. Lee Watkins, who installed many of the lights, said that the original bulbs called for were 40 watts.

Whether you have a number on your postlight or not it is absolutely crucial that you have at least a light that has a chance of showing your address in an emergency. Yes we found the ones that did not have numbers on the globe by driving and backing up and looking all over the place.


If you see your address here your light is burnt out.

Community Relations Committee disbands.. Social Club issues

By concensus this committee disbanded itself. There seemed to be the idea that community apathy was one of the reasons another reason may have been that there had been no complaints for them to look at during the 6 months they served. Also, some orignal members were falling off in attendance. Still another reason may have been that they were not elected to serve on the committee by park residents but formed as volunteers instead.


Still we wish that some sort of Association could be formed in the park with dues to support it and the clout to carry out negotiations with management on issues that affect all park residents.


Some of us feel that the Social Club should exist solely for the entertainment of residents and in no way should be involved in the politics of Park issues. That leaves us with no governing body to help decide park problems if they arise. Having an association funded with non-social club dues is a way to solve this problem.


Appathy by residents to create such an association seems to say, "Hey! We have a good thing here and we don't need an association." That being the case, everything will proceed like it has always proceeded before.


The Social Club leadership, of course, after serving a year is becoming tired and would like to retire but as usual finding folks to volunteer is not that easy. The leadership with the exception of Jim Rose has agreed to stay on for this next term. I would think that we will see them all bail out next year as the jobs they have take a lot of time and energy. Thinking about this now could lead to a smooth transition next year. We need people to volunteer to to become assistants to our officers and learn the ropes with an eye to filling the vacancies that will occur next year.

As many of you have seen, Joy Newman has a scrap book of history photos and clippings of LVH from the very begining of the park. It is always located in the library in the clubhouse if you have not seen it. It is a wonderful book. I would like to see the entire book kept here on line as a web page connected to our main site by a link.

To do that we will need photographers to take pictures of everything Joy has put in that book or scan them to a larger size so they are readable and then get the images to me and I will put them onto a web page. Scanned images are not all that great sometimes so we may need folks willing to rewrite stories that are posted or are willing to search the newspaper archives and copy them.

This would be the LVH history committee and I'm thinking it will take quite a few folks so that everything doesn't fall on one person or a few folks. The more volunteers... the faster the process will go. Now this article is meant to determine the interest level out there. AS far as I can see there are 25- 50 folks who read this webpage daily so it would be a project for this group because you are the people who have computers.
