YARD CREW PROJECT!!!!!
The LVH Yard Crew has another project and will be gathering Saturday July 19th at 10 AM. Thanks to the Wilsons, Paradis,Shimeks, Newmans and the Burkes for your help. Bring your shovels, hoes, diggers, weedeaters, buckets gloves and a good strong back. We also have another tentative crew set to work on Wednesday July 23rd if we don't finish on Saturday. I will notify all those I have called if the 23rd is still needed.
If you are thinking of volunteers, but haven't yet give me a call. It is fun, good exercise, helps you get to know your neighbors and leaves you with a feeling of accomplishment. We can find a job for everyone no matter what your limitations.

No new projects!!!!!
The "Curb Appeal Crew" is at a stand-still in finding new projects. No one has come forward with new nominations. We did investigate a few potential yards and either they did not fall under the criteria of
(Physical ability and financial need) or they did not want or services.
Don't be bashful, if you know of someone or YOU are in need please call me. If we loose the momentum of the workers you may find you are to little and to late for any positive results.

WANTED!!!!!!!!
Folks that will join a group of other LVH residents to help other LVH residents with their yard work. A group of us were kicking around the idea of helping others, sharing plants was the first idea, then we moved on to sharing labor.
What do you think of starting a group to do light yard work for residents that can't and don't have the money to hire a lawn person.? If enough of us get together with rakes, shovels and good strong backs we could complete the weeding, trimming and mulching in a Saturday morning. The home owner would still be responsible for any need supplies, i.e shrubs, mulch, grass seed etc. The yard crew would only offer their labor free to the homeowner. We could have a signup sheet at the club house for residents needing and wanting yard service and another for residents interested in offering their labor.
This would be a way to spruce up the park and share with others at the same time. Let's hear your ideas, questions and or comments.

Thomas & Shimek snoop..

Last Saturday night one of our residents, Ron Thomas, was seen patroling the neighborhood late at night keeping us
safe. He was seen shinning his flash light down dark paths and in every nook and cranny that someone
could hide in. He also stopped in front of my house and shinned it in my dinning room window to say HI.
Thanks Ron for helping us to feel safer.

Just when you thought it was safe reality hits......
Last night about 10:15pm as we were sitting watching tv
our backyard lights went on. I went to see what kind of animal set them off. Needless to say I didn't see anything.
A couple of minutes later our door bell rang. Jim went to answer the door and no one was at either door. I
called the police and that wasn't easy because I got a machine telling me what number to call. The number in the phone book is not correct.For your information the correct number is 265-4231. I hadn't called 911 because it was not life threatening.The number the recording gave me was for during the day so I called 911. They said the police were in the area looking for a suspicious character.They also gave me the above number to call to get the dispatch office. Once I got a hold of them the police were here very quickly. They searched all around and of course were not able to find anything. About 11 or 11:15 our lights went on in the back again and we called again, another police person came and she walked the trail behind our houses. Unfortunately both times turned up empty handed but, maybe an another burglary attempt was averted. I guess we have to still keep our eyes and ears open for neighborhood watch to work.

jim & bonnie have an X-10 movement detection system that covers the path behind their home and also gives an indication to them when they are in the living room that the lights in the backyard have been set off by movement. we should consider developing a rapid community response in case of things like this happening in the future. a cascading rapid phone call system to block captians and all residents would be a good thing. another idea would be to get several residents into the area with flashlights and cell phones.. making a lot of noise. This would be a good discussion at the Neighborhood Watch Meeting.

Been Tripping Lately???
No, I'm not talkiing about falling down. My idea of retirement was to travel and see the world. Then I settled for the Oregon Coast, because everything is a dim light compared to the Coast. I am not a true Oregonian but I got here as soon as I could. Though I am not retired I would like to take day trips to interesting places and see more of Oregon. How many of you are getting itchy feet to do some traveling now that Spring is springing? I don't know much about travel arrangements but I have spent a lifetime managing inventory for big business so I guess it is something I could learn: unless we have volunteers to take on this little project.
My friend BettyBop is an expert and she had some wonderful day trips when I first moved to LVH, but now she has her hands pretty full. Last Summer there were also some good trips to out of the way places. I would like to see that tradition carried forward and plan more group day trips to various sights. Who else would be interested? How about some ideas of places to go and things to see. Get those creative juices flowing and generate some ideas!

There is no charge for assistance from the fire dept. We have never had to have an ambulance, so I do not know about that. But the fire dept assistance is paid by the taxpayers. We have nothing but the highest praise for this service. They are prompt,courteous and extremely quick. 911 is the way to get this help. If it is not an emergency, they will not come with flashing lights and sirens. Please feel free to refer people to us

Gini and Steve Cline have sold their home, and they have moved to their apartment in Portland. Gini stopped by the first of the week while walking their dog, Treble, and brought me up-to-date concerning the florist shop she and her daughter, Toni Perry, own in the Old Sellwood area of Portland. I'm sure all wish her the best of luck.
After my visit with Gini, I decided my sister, Lois, who lives in Oceanside, California, deserved an Easter basket of flowers. Lois who is 12 years older than yours truly was the one of three sisters who helped me make May Day baskets for my friends in Culbertson, Nebraska. Long, long ago! Not knowing the florist shop address or phone number, I searched the web and located the web site which gave me all the information to order the flowers. They arrived the same day, and a neighbor of my sister sent me an email this morning that the basket is beautiful.

GRETCHEN
I learned early in life, that when you're small, you have to compensate. If you don't, everyone will walk all over you! If you're timid and shy, everybody will try and take advantage of you. Being a runt, I speak from experience!
One day, as I lay by the fire, snuggled at my mistress's feet, I thought back to when my mama gave me a pep talk. It was shortly before I left mama's home for good. "Gretchen," she said, "Buck up, girl! No one's going to respect you if you cower in the corner or hide behind your mistress's skirts. What you need is ATTITUDE! You come from strong German stock. That's why you're so stubborn! It's just part of your nature!
I smiled to myself as I recalled mama's sweet words. From that day on, I held my head high and determined that I wouldn't take any guff from anybody. It was the best advice I ever received!
First, I had to properly train my human mistress. She was of the mistaken opinion that when I went to live with her, SHE was in charge of ME and I was to follow her orders without question! We struggled for a few weeks, but she finally came to understand that she was to be at MY beckon call, and not the reverse! Once she grasped that idea, things began to run more smoothly.
Whenever I took my mistress out for a stroll in the park we live in, she would become angry and shout at me to quit barking at everyone I saw. Some of these humans we encountered, were mean, old farts! She didn't realize that some of these same people, who were nice to me when she was around, made degrading comments to me, the minute she was out of earshot! I had no way of making her understand that I was cussing these bullies out in German!
This human has been good to me, and in her own strange way, I'm sure she really cares about me. I've never understood the weird baby talk she talks to me, but I've forgiven her, because I know deep down that she has a kind heart.
I still test her every now and then, by peeing on her carpet. It's the only way I can tell for SURE that she really still loves me! She used to get so upset when I'd do that, but now she just gets that sappy look on her face and tells me she knows I couldn't help it. (Yeah, right!) Just for good measure, once every six months or so, I also hack up my dinner onto the floor! It's just that I get bored and have to create a little excitement! She thinks I'm sick and gives me extra cuddles and goodies, so it's really good for both of us. (Maybe she wouldn't see it that way?)
My one complaint is, I HATE THURSDAY NIGHTS! My mistress, and the other human who lives in my house, both go to the clubhouse for some stupid "game night." I would absolutely LOVE to stay home alone. Then I'd have PARTY TIME! I could go in any room I wanted, lie on the beds, hide under the dresser, drag the garbage out of the trash can .... it would be FABULOUS! But nooooooo ..... they don't realize I'm a BIG girl and I can be left alone! Instead they drag me along in the car, where I have to sit for 2 or 3 hours! BORING! Sure they wrap me in warm blankets and bring me special treats, but ya know .... girls just wanna have fun!
Oh well, over all, life is good! Good food, a good bed, humans who usually mind me pretty well. All in all, what more could a girl want?

Cleda Tries Her Hand @ Writing How About You?
First, this is the second typing! I pushed the wrong key and whish it disappeared. My excuse is that I'm very new at this.
After breakfast this morning, and by the way it was delicious, I rushed home to try out three new things Ron put under the heading, Entertainment. Since then I have checked out "The Oregonian", "Statesman Journal", and MSN Free Games. The two newspapers are great, and I'm sure all will enjoy them. Also; when I was reading the "Statesman Journal", I scrolled to the bottom of the page and clicked on to "USA Today". Surprise! Following my brief reading of the newspapers, I tried the MSN Free Games. I lost two games of solitaire and plan to give the poker game a try. Thanks to Ron....the LVH web page only gets better. Maybe if I hint a little, he will also add the local "News Times". Thanks for reading this....you are so brave!!

HOW TO MAKE YOUR HOME SAFE
Put up Beware of Dog signs (available at Fred Meyers for 99 cents.
Put a very large dog dish outside your back door.
If you are a woman alone put a pair of men's boots outside your door.
Put motion detector lights wherever appropriate such as your front porch, back deck, over the garage door and Breezeway door. If you have an enclosed breezeway you may wish to put a motion detector light outside your utility room door.
Put peephole hardware in your doors so that you can see who comes to your door. Available at Fred Meyer for $4.99.
Install window locks with thumbscrews. These are available at Fred Meyer for $2.49 for the vertical windows. For horizontal sliding windows you may consider cutting pieces of hardwood to put in the track to act as a stop.
If you have tall bushes outside your window cut them back as they provide a place for intruders to hide.
Put door jammer bars on all exterior doors. These are adjustable to fit any doorknob height. They are made of heavy-duty steel. Cost $24.95. An alternative is the installation of an extra dead-bolt assembly.
Use Super door alarm. They are motion sensitive. 125 decibels with and on-off switch. They use a 9volt battery. They cost $9.95
If you do have a monitored alarm system keep it on even when you are home. A monitored system has a monthly fee ranging from $21.95 to $29.95 depending on the service company. Initial hardware installation will cost up to $800. These systems cover burglary and fire. Remote portable keypads are usually included which allow you to open your garage door, turn on the lights, and turn the system on or off from your car. To offset these costs your insurance company will give you at least a 15% discount.
A non-monitored wireless system is available from Radio Shack for as little as $149.00. This includes coverage for front and back door and one motion detector within your house. Additional door contacts and motion detectors can be added.
Even if you do not have an alarm system you can get stickers that say you do. The internet site for free Ace Alarm stickers is reached by typing in Ace Alarm Window Decal and then Search.
Put lamps and radio on a timer and place these items in appropriate rooms when you are gone. Timers are available at Fred Meyer for under $10.00. They should operate both in the am and pm.
When you leave your car be sure to lock/hide your garage door opener control in the glove compartment. If your car is being serviced give only the valet key to the service department. The thief can obtain your door opening code very easily.
The striker plates for your deadbolt and doorknob lock are installed with only 1 inch long screws into a 5/8 inch thick piece of wood. This piece of wood is next to a 2 x 6 wall stud. The screws should be removed and replaced with 3 and 1/2 inch screws. These longer screws should also be used to reinforce the hinge side of the door. This upgrade is appropriate for all exterior doors.
Lock up your tools in a container in the garage so that the burglars have to bring their own.
Do not leave your ladder outside, lock it in the garage.
Do not store your valuables (cash or jewelry) in the master bedroom, bathroom or closet. These are the first places that thieves look. Thieves are generally only in the house for less than 10 minutes. Make it hard for them to find your valuables.
Take pictures of all of your significant valuables including electronic components. Keep sales receipt records. Etch your Drivers License Number on all big dollar items. Make an inventory of all valuables for insurance and recovery purposes.
Recheck your insurance policy to see that current homeowners coverage is sufficient to protect your inventory of valuables.
