By 'here,' we mean Newport, specifically the Nye Beach neighborhood, which will host its annual Nye Beach Murder Mystery Weekend.

The event, which is expected to draw hundreds, will start at 11 a.m. Saturday, when you get your case. Murder, pirates and the 1960s are involved."

BBC NEWS | Science & Environment | Battery that 'charges in seconds'

BBC NEWS | Science & Environment | Battery that 'charges in seconds': "A new manufacturing method for lithium-ion batteries could lead to smaller, lighter batteries that can be charged in just seconds.

Batteries that discharge just as quickly would be useful for electric and hybrid cars, where a quick jolt of charge is needed for acceleration."

An email from Larry Henson.. Park Manager to the LVH Community

Good Morning Ron,
Could you please help get the word out to residents concerning - Bringing stuff to the Community Center to give away.
I appreciate the good hearted nature of residents wanting to help others by giving them an opportunity to get something for free.
However, LVH Management cannot allow residents to bring items from their homes to the Community Center for the purpose of potentially giving the item away to someone who might need it.
To start such a practice could cause the Community Center to become overcrowded with all manner of items.
Residents having items they no longer have a use for may want to take these items to either the Goodwill donation center at the former Big Guys Diner on hwy 101 across from Barbara's Blossom Shop, the Salvation Army Donation Center in the Newport City Center, the Thrift Store in Nye Beach, Centro De Aiyuda or other place.
If they so choose, residents may also place flyers listing items they have to give away on the bulletin board within the community center.
Many thanks to Longview Hills Residents for being so big hearted, your generosity is inspiring.
Larry Henson, CM/LA-LVHMHC

Yesterday 30 of our folks heard from Kay Wyatt, a local geophysicist /electrical engineer, about the facts surrounding tsunami's and earthquakes in

Oregon ... in particular, Newport. Our hope is that those 30 will be a catalyst that raises our awareness within our community.

You missed a good one if you were not there. Kay is a hands on person that used audience participation and simple analogies to explain very complex science. There was not a person present that did not walk away with greatly enhanced knowledge.

To those of you who did attend... mention Kay to your teacher friends and relatives... She loves to show children what she presented to us.

The child in me ate 3 oreo cookies... You would have to have been there to appreciate what that means.

Hot air linked to headaches, but how? - CNN.com

Hot air linked to headaches, but how? - CNN.com: "Headaches, big and small, are among the most common health complaints. Almost 90 percent of women and about 70 percent of men get tension headaches, the Mayo Clinic says. Yet doctors still don't know much about what causes them.
About 18 percent of women and 6 percent of men in the United States report having migraines.

About 18 percent of women and 6 percent of men in the United States report having migraines.

In a new large-scale study published in the journal Neurology this week, researchers found that higher temperatures and, to a lesser extent, low air pressure, influence severe headaches.

But researchers aren't sure how temperature influences headaches, and others say that a slew of other factors could be involved in the connection.

'I think it's more complicated than that,' said Dr. Joel Saper, director of the Michigan Head Pain and Neurological Institute in Ann Arbor, Michigan, who was not involved in the study. Temperature and pressure may be indirect evidence of other causal factors."

Dead Whale Shuts Down Central Oregon Coast Beach

Dead Whale Shuts Down Central Oregon Coast Beach: "The saga began on Friday as a whale was spotted moving awkwardly in the waters near Heceta Head State Scenic Viewpoint and its famed lighthouse. U.S. Coast Guard authorities and marine biologists kept an eye on it all weekend, as it seemed stranded in the breakers at various times."

Oregon Coast Restaurant Reviews: The Shouldn't, the Bad and the Ugly

Oregon Coast Restaurant Reviews: The Shouldn't, the Bad and the Ugly: "90 percent of the time, BeachConnection.net's restaurant reviews are largely positive. There's plenty of so-so restaurants out there that sort of fall under the category of either just not interesting enough to review or write about, and with a touch of 'if we can’t say anything nice we won’t way anything at all.' See more Oregon Coast Restaurant reviews....

Luckily, there aren't too many seriously awful ones we've come across either - not yet. But there are three that stand out: so vile and wrong in one way or another they definitely deserve a literary pounding."

This seems like something for us all to remember . . .

How to Dance in the Rain

It was a busy morning, about 8:30, when an elderly gentleman in his 80's arrived to have stitches removed from his thumb. He said he was in a hurry as he had an appointment at 9:00 am.
I took his vital signs and had him take a seat, knowing it would be over an hour before someone would to able to see him. I saw him looking at his watch and decided, since I was not busy with another patient, I would evaluate his wound. On exam, it was well healed, so I talked to one of the doctors, got the needed supplies to remove his sutures and redress his wound.

While taking care of his wound, I asked him if he had another doctor's appointment this morning, as he was in such a hurry.
The gentleman told me no, that he needed to go to the nursing home to eat breakfast with his wife. I inquired as to her health.

He told me that she had been there for a while and that she was a victim of Alzheimer's Disease.
As we talked, I asked if she would be upset if he was a bit late.

He replied that she no longer knew who he was, that she had not recognized him in five years now.
I was surprised, and asked him, 'And you still go every morning, even though she doesn't know who you are?'

He smiled as he patted my hand and said,
'She doesn't know me, but I still know who she is.'
I had to hold back tears as he left, I had goose bumps on my arms, and thought,

'That is the kind of love I want in my life.'

True love is neither physical, nor romantic.
True love is an acceptance of all that is, has been, will be, and will not be.
With all the jokes and fun that are in e-mails, sometimes there is one that comes along that has an important message. This is one of those.
The happiest people don't necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the best of everything they have.
I hope you share this with someone you care about. I just did.
'Life isn't about how to survive the storm,
but how to dance in the rain.'

New VCR/DVD

Folks the new VCR/DVD is working at the clubhouse. However, it does not work exactly like the one you may have in your home. There are some differences. We have composed step by step instructions and hope to have them available near the TV Friday...

However, if you would like your own personal copy you may copy it from the below link:

NEW! combo DVD/VCR

Yesterday was a very big surprise for everyone... Let me tell you about it... I was over at the clubhouse and talking to the ladies playing Canasta... Told them we really have a need for a new DVD. SHAzam! Jean Hart says, "We have one you can have." She gets on a borrowed cell phone and calls Jim Hart and tells him I'll be right over to pick it up.

Another SHAZAMMM! The unit is a new (used 3 times) VCR/DVD combination unit. Did I say, "NEW?" Yep, yep. I did. Spent a few hours trying to get hook up right but found that the problem is in the operation of the TV program... Have it more or less straightened out and will type up instructions for use today.. You will need them.. This is different than you are used to.

A couple of tests need to be done today and then we will be good to go... Keep you informed.

What do thinkers think?

About half way through this presentation... Bill comes up with a talk on education... This whole thing is 20 minutes. So, a lot of you may not be interested.

"Lucy" Discoverer Donald C. Johanson - TIME

"Lucy" Discoverer Donald C. Johanson - TIME: "Here's a zinger: what makes us human?
What makes us human depends on what place on our evolutionary path we're talking about. If you go back six million years ago, what makes us human is that we were walking up right. That's all. If you go to 2.6 million years ago, it's the fact that we're designing and making stone tools. And at 2 million years ago what makes human is our large brains that are at least two and half times the size of a chimp's. At twenty thousand years ago, what makes us human is the ability to make beautiful cave art. It's all relational. And if you look at us today, I wonder if we are human."

Poker????

In a recent conversation a friend asked why there isn't a poker night for players here at LVH?

There used to be one. But it faded out a few years back so what we are doing is running a poll on the right side of this site to see if there is any interest.... Check it out.

We're Back!!

It has been interesting for the last few days.... But everything is back to normal... So far. Sorry that there was no blog for the last few days but Blogger took us down. They thought we were a Spam Blog. They have completed our investigation and returned control to us.

First time I called up the site it had posted an article that would close our site and then take you to some sales site... I have fixed that but now am wary if there are shenanigans going on and that will keep me busy checking things out for a few days....

It's good to be back writing again... Ginger Dale has sent me the Newsletter and I will have it posted on line tomorrow sometime....
